Alternative Learning Centers
Providing educational services for (grades K-10) students in a nontraditional learning environment.
What are Alternative Learning Centers?
Alternative Learning Centers (ALC) promote development of behavioral, academic, and social skills. These skills help the student to be a more productive and educated member of our community.
Program Overview:
ALCs provide educational services for students who are experiencing behavioral challenges, are experiencing academic difficulties, need a nontraditional learning environment, or are involved in serious disciplinary incidents. The academic materials used at the ALCs meet Virginia Standards of Learning. Every effort is made to match the student’s base school courses. Our goal is for all students to meet these basic conditions:
- Regular attendance.
- Appropriate behavior.
- Good grades.
How they benefit students:
Academic Focus
ALCs use a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework in order to support student outcomes through continuous data-driven decision making. The ALCs provide equitable student academic opportunities, a positive school climate, and promote social-emotional wellness through a culture of shared responsibility and collaboration among staff members and parents.
Behavioral and Emotional Wellness
ALCs use Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to help students develop academic and social skills.
The expectations are:
- Respect: Students are expected to respect others and themselves.
- Responsibility: The ALC helps students be responsible and active in their own education.
- Readiness: A positive attitude is a key to success. Students are expected to be prepared for their lessons.
Executive Functioning
ALCs help students improve their ability to start tasks, stay organized, monitor their own progress, and work through hard tasks.
Restorative Justice
ALC staff members use restorative practices to build relationships with students and families.

Vision and Goals: Burke Alternative Learning Center provides an opportunity for students to develop skills to understand their emotions and manage them in a school setting. The curriculum, textbooks, and supplementary materials used meet the expectations of the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL).
In addition, the ALC uses Read Every Day (R.E.D.), a reading program that requires the parent and child to read 20 minutes nightly. A focus on socio-emotional learning is emphasized throughout the school day.
The Three Rs: Burke ALC focuses on three areas: respect, responsibility, and readiness in order to meet our student academic and behavioral achievement goals.
-
Respect: The ALC provides an environment of mutual respect. Students are expected to respect others and, most importantly, respect themselves.
-
Responsibility: The ALC encourages students to be responsible for their own actions, inactions, and words; and for them to become active participants in their own education. The ALC assists students in developing responsible relationships within their schools and communities.
-
Readiness: In order to prepare for the “real” world, students are expected to be prepared for their lessons, including having the most important tool–a good attitude.
Student Achievement Goals:
-
Essential Life Skills: All students will demonstrate the aptitude, attitude, and skills to lead responsible, fulfilling, and respectful lives.
-
Academics: All students will obtain, understand, analyze, communicate, and apply knowledge and skills to achieve success in school and life.
-
Responsibility to the Community: All students will understand and model the important attributes that people must have to contribute to an effective and productive community and the common good for all.
Course of Study: Burke ALC follows the FCPS Elementary Program of Studies for all subjects.
To promote academic and behavioral success, class sizes are usually limited to no more than 15 students.
