Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) Information

Find out about assessments for your pre-kindergarten or kindergarten student

Most pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students in Fairfax County Public Schools participate in Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program assessments for literacy, mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills. VKRP assessments are given in fall and spring to fulfill state testing requirements. Different assessments measure different skills.

  • Mathematics skills - Early Mathematics Assessment System (EMAS) is an interview with teacher
  • Self-regulation and social skills - Child Behavior Rating Scale (CBRS) is a checklist completed by the teacher after observing the student in class for 2-3 weeks
  • Literacy skills - Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) is a one-on-one assessment completed with the teacher
