Grades K-12

Continuity of Learning for ELs

K-12 English Learners (ELs) will have the opportunity to review concepts and skills using optional materials.

Print materials will be mailed to families who did not opt-out of the weekly distance learning packets. Families will receive resources near the end of June. The print materials will not be turned in or graded.

Mailed Resources

Kindergarten

  • All English Learners (ELs) in Kindergarten will receive an English Language Development (ELD) Summer Practice Book. Students with a home or correspondence language of Spanish will receive the Summer Practice Book in Spanish.

Grades 1-6

  • English Learners in grades 1-6 with an ELP Level of 1 or 2 will receive an English Language Development (ELD) Summer Practice Book. Students with a home or correspondence language of Spanish will receive the Summer Practice Book in Spanish.

Grades 6-8

  • English Learners in grades 6-8 with an ELP Level of 1 or 2 will receive an English Language Development (ELD) Summer Practice Book.

Grades 9-11

  • English Learners in grades 9-11 with an ELP Level of 1 or 2 will receive an English Language Development (ELD) Summer Practice Book.
  • Students in Individual Math and Algebra 1 Part 1 will receive a supplemental mathematics practice book to prepare for Algebra.

More information will be shared by your student’s school in June.

ESOL Language and Literacy Connections (Online)

This free online class provides FCPS middle and high school English Learners the opportunity to engage in thematic lessons in an online environment with an ESOL teacher. In this class, students continue developing their academic and reading and writing skills in online discussions with an ESOL teacher. This class is pass/fail only and fulfills the online requirement toward graduation. 

Eligibility

FCPS middle and high school students receiving ESOL services who are looking to develop their academic and reading and writing skills.

Monday, June 21 - Friday, July 9, 2021

Times

Daily synchronous lessons:

  • 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. or
  • 7 - 8 p.m.

  • Out-of-County Students: Not Eligible

Credit Recovery: English 9, 10, and 11 for ELs

Credit Recovery is an opportunity for students to recover two high-school course credits. Students may take one course per session. Students should contact their school’s summer program administrator for additional information.

Courses

English 9 for ELs is designed for FCPS ELP level 1, 2, and 3 students who have received a failing grade in English 9. This course is aligned to the WIDA English language development (ELD) standards and the English 9 SOLs.

English 10 for ELs is designed for FCPS ELP level 1, 2, and 3 students who have received a failing grade in English 10. This course is aligned to the WIDA English language development (ELD) standards and the English 10 SOLs.

English 11 for ELs is designed for FCPS ELP level 1, 2, and 3 students who have received a failing grade in English 11. This course is aligned to the WIDA English language development (ELD) standards and the English 11 SOLs.

Numeracy Essentials is available to students who received a NM or F during the 2020-21 school year. This course focuses on foundational mathematics learning.

Math Readiness is available to students who received a NM or F during the 2020-21 school year. This course extends foundational mathematics learning.

PreAlgebra for ELs is available to students who received a NM or F during the 2020-21 school year. This course extends mathematics learning and introduces algebra concepts. 

Government for ELs is available to students who received a NM or F during the 2020-21 school year. This course is aligned to the Virginia and US Government Standards of Learning and is designed to develop content understandings and language proficiency simultaneously.

Active Physics for ELs is available to students who received a NM or F during the 2020-21 school year. This course is aligned to the Virginia Physics Standards of Learning and is designed to develop content understandings and language proficiency simultaneously 
 

Eligibility

  • Only English Learners (ELP levels 1-3) may register for thes classes.
  • Students are eligible to enroll in a credit recovery course if they received a grade of NM or F at the end of the school year.
  • Students may not take a course for new credit.

English Learners can recover credit from other courses.

Important Information

Credit recovery courses and test remediation classes may be canceled if they are under-enrolled. If a course or class is canceled, students will be notified using the registration contact information provided.

Registration

During registration, parents need to select the summer site the student will attend.

Tuition

  • FCPS Students: $0
  • Out-of-County Students: Not Eligible

Transportation

Transportation will be provided from depot stops, Students will receive bus information after registering and are advised to be at the stops at least 10 minutes before the departure time.

Lunch

Lunch will be available at no-cost to all students this summer because of USDA program waivers. Students also have the option to bring lunch from home. Lunch menus will be posted by individual schools prior to the start of the summer program.
