Summer Learning: English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Grades K-12

Continuity of Learning for ELs

K-12 English Learners (ELs) will have the opportunity to review concepts and skills using optional materials.

Print materials will be mailed to families who did not opt-out of the weekly distance learning packets. Families will receive resources near the end of June. The print materials will not be turned in or graded.

Mailed Resources

Kindergarten

  • All English Learners (ELs) in Kindergarten will receive an English Language Development (ELD) Summer Practice Book. Students with a home or correspondence language of Spanish will receive the Summer Practice Book in Spanish.
  • Students will also receive Kindergarten materials.

Grades 1-6

  • English Learners in grades 1-6 with an ELP Level of 1 or 2 will receive an English Language Development (ELD) Summer Practice Book. Students with a home or correspondence language of Spanish will receive the Summer Practice Book in Spanish.
  • Students will also receive grade level materials.

Grades 6-8

  • English Learners in grades 6-8 with an ELP Level of 1 or 2 will receive an English Language Development (ELD) Summer Practice Book.
  • Students will also receive grade level materials.

Grades 9-11

  • English Learners in grades 9-11 with an ELP Level of 1 or 2 will receive an English Language Development (ELD) Summer Practice Book.
  • Students in Individual Math and Algebra 1 Part 1 will receive a supplemental mathematics practice book to prepare for Algebra.

Office Hours

Students may attend weekly office hours with an ESOL teacher from June 29 – July 31, 2020. Office hours with an ESOL teacher are in addition to office hours in Language Arts and Mathematics.

More information will be shared by your student’s school in June.

ESOL Language and Literacy Connections (Online)

This free online class provides FCPS middle and high school English Learners the opportunity to engage in thematic lessons in an online environment with an ESOL teacher. In this class, students continue developing their academic and reading and writing skills in online discussions with an ESOL teacher. This class is pass/fail only and fulfills the online requirement toward graduation. 

Eligibility

FCPS middle and high school students receiving ESOL services who are looking to develop their academic and reading and writing skills.

Dates

Monday, June 22 - Tuesday, July 14, 2020

Times

Daily synchronous lessons:

  • 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. or
  • 7 - 8 p.m.

Virtual Credit Recovery: English 9 and 10 for ELs

Virtual Credit Recovery is an opportunity for students to recover one high-school course credit and receive a grade. 

Over three weeks, students will:

  • Take part in daily synchronous learning sessions with their teacher.
  • Complete daily online learning modules at their own pace (asynchronous).

Teachers will have office hours at set times and by appointment for students to ask questions. Teachers will provide this information to the students.

Courses

English 9 for ELs is designed for FCPS ELP level 1, 2, and 3 students who have received a failing grade in English 9. This course is aligned to the WIDA English language development (ELD) standards and the English 9 SOL.

English 10 for ELs is designed for FCPS ELP level 1, 2, and 3 students who have received a failing grade in English 10. This course is aligned to the WIDA English language development (ELD) standards and the English 10 SOL.

Eligibility

  • Only English Learners (ELP levels 1-3) may register for this class.
  • Students are eligible to enroll in Virtual Credit Recovery for one course they received a grade of F in before.
  • Students may not take a course for new credit.

Dates and Times

July 6 - July 24, 2020

Students will work synchronously with a teacher for 2.5 hours each day and independently for 2.5 hours each day.

Grading

  • Only students in credit recovery courses receive grades.
  • Grades will be calculated according to guidelines outlined in FCPS High School Grading and Reporting to Parents.
  • Grade point average (GPA) is calculated on the basis of all courses for which credit has been earned or attempted, including repeated courses previously passed.
  • Withdrawing from a course:
    • Students who withdraw from July 6 - July 9 may do so without a grade penalty.
    • Students who withdraw from July 10 - July 21 will receive a mark of withdrawn failing (WF) or withdrawn passing (WP).
    • Students who withdraw after July 21 will receive a mark of withdrawn pass (WP) or fail (F).
