New This Year

  1. Students must be registered in Fairfax County Public Schools prior to submitting a divisionwide lottery application.
    • A parent or guardian of an unregistered student must complete the countywide registration process at the base school.  The registration must occur at the student’s base school; this is the school the student would attend based on current address/residence.  General registration information, to include an FCPS boundary locator, can be found on the General Registration Requirements page.
  2. All parents are required to use a SIS parent account to register their child for the Magnet Program lottery. Once the SIS Parent Account registration process is completed, full access to SIS Parent Account login is restricted to only the parents with students in the current school year. It may appear that the account is disabled, however access to the Online Magnet Lottery Registration is allowed.
  3. A one-time non-refundable $100 pupil placement application fee applies for students accessing special programs outside of their base school for Immersion or Magnet school programs as outlined in Notice 5922.  For more information, please visit the Magnet Lottery Fees - Frequently Asked Questions webpage.

  • If you have any questions regarding your child’s eligibility, please contact Rita Cloutier by email (rfcloutier@fcps.edu) or by phone (571-423-4828).

  • Students must be registered in Fairfax County Public Schools prior to submitting a divisionwide lottery application.
    • A parent or guardian of an unregistered student must complete the countywide registration process at the base school.  The registration must occur at the student’s base school; this is the school the student would attend based on current address/residence.  General registration information, to include an FCPS boundary locator, can be found on the General Registration Requirements page.

  • For rising Kindergarten, a child must be 5 years old by September 30, 2018.
  • For rising 1st grade, a child must be 6 years old by September 30, 2018. The Code of Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) regulation state that a child's fifth birthday must fall on or before September 30 of the school year for the child to be eligible to attend a Virginia public school. If a parent elects to place a child in a private kindergarten program because the child did not meet the public school age requirements, the child will be considered eligible for kindergarten the following year. However, the principal has the option of promoting the child to first grade upon review of the child's academic records and staff assessment of performance. If a child attends private school kindergarten and first grade the child would be eligible for second grade but the principal maintains the option to place the child in first grade if concerns arise. The Virginia Council for Private Education (VCPE) has been granted authority through the Code of Virginia to accredit private schools. If a student was enrolled, successfully completed and promoted to the first grade from a Virginia private school accredited by one of the Virginia Council for Private Education (VCPE) the student shall be enrolled in the first grade without an assessment regardless of age. Parent must provide a final report card that indicates that the child has successfully completed the kindergarten program at the accredited private school. For information on accredited private schools in Virginia, please visit the Virginia Council for Private Education (VCPE) page.
  • Siblings of current magnet students (legacy) will not be eligible without completing the registration process.

Lottery Process

  • A separate computer generated lottery for each grade level and site determines the acceptance and wait list order of those who registered.
  • The lottery will be held in early-April and parents will be notified of their student's status in mid-April.
  • If you do not receive an anticipated communication/notification via email, please contact Rita Cloutier by email (rfcloutier@fcps.edu) or by phone (571-423-4828).
  • Acceptance into one of the magnet programs is non-transferable.
  • Acceptance into the Hunters Woods Magnet Program is non-transferable to the Hunters Woods Level IV Advanced Academics Program. Students who have qualified for level IV services and are not in the Hunters Woods boundaries or identified feeder schools would be provided services at either their base school or designated center school. For more information about what school is your child’s level IV center school, please refer to the Advanced Academics Level IV School Assignments.
  • If interested in the Spanish Immersion program at Bailey's ES, please follow the World Language's Immersion application and lottery process.
  • The Immersion application and lottery for Bailey's is SEPARATE from the magnet application and lottery.

Transportation

  • Transportation can be provided for students residing outside the magnet school's attendance area.
  • Designated bus depots are predetermined and finalized in the summer. When selecting which magnet school(s) that you might apply for, consider the travel time for your family and child. It is the responsibility of a family member to transport the child to/from the bus depot location. Also, consider the length of travel time for your child to/from the magnet school location.
  • Transportation is dependent on the adoption of the FY19 budget.
