Family and Consumer Sciences - High School

The program empowers students to become contributing family members, productive problem solvers, responsible citizens, quality workers, and continuing learners.

The Family & Consumer Sciences high school programs allow students the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in the fields of hospitality industries, child care services, education and design. These are essential life skills needed to sustain the well being of the student and help them manage their future careers.

The educational experience combines classroom instruction and supervised practical experience in an approved facility or laboratory environment. This approach fosters character and work ethic needed to develop contributing members of society, problem solvers, responsible family members and continuing learners.

Culinary Articulation Agreements

Culinary Arts articulation agreements allow high school students to earn college credit for coursework completed at the high school without tuition costs. By completing a course with a B or better, students have two years to apply for and receive college credit for their previous work. There is no tuition associated with articulated courses, and the college credit is specific to an institution.

Students enrolled in FACS courses may have the opportunity to participate in Work-Based Learning Experiences. These opportunities are varied and evident throughout the Family & Consumer Sciences curriculum. For example:

  • The Teachers for Tomorrow program includes job shadowing, career mentorship, and informational interviews, which lead up to an internship experience. Students participate in educational settings in elementary, middle and high school levels. Students plan and execute the delivery of instruction including various instructional strategies that meet the needs of all learners.
  • The Culinary Arts programs provide students with the experience of operating of a self-sustaining café. Through this student enterprise, students manage the organizational process of ordering food products, the financial aspect of cost and profit, the creation of menu items and the logistics of serving these items on a weekly basis.
  • The Early Childhood Careers course provides an experience for high school students to understand the stages of human growth, to assess educational development, to create learning activities and foster cooperative behavior among preschool aged students.
