Quarterly Overview of Grade 6 Word Study
The objectives and outcomes for each unit are common across FCPS and based on the Virginia Standards of Learning. The pacing by quarter and by week provides an example of how the curriculum can be organized throughout the year. Teacher teams may adjust the pacing or order of units to best meet the needs of students.
Units and Details
Unit 1: Building a Community of Word Learners
Students will be able to:
- Identify word origins and derivations.
- Use roots, affixes, synonyms, and antonyms to expand vocabulary.
Unit 2: Directional Prefixes
Students will be able to:
- Identify word origins and derivations.
- Use roots, affixes, synonyms, and antonyms to expand vocabulary.
- Extend general and cross-curricular vocabulary through speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Unit 3: Paired Latin and Greek Prefixes
Students will be able to:
- Identify word origins and derivations.
- Use roots, affixes, synonyms, and antonyms to expand vocabulary.
- Extend general and cross-curricular vocabulary through speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Unit 4: Paired Latin and Greek Numerical Prefixes
Students will be able to:
- Identify word origins and derivations.

Unit 5: Latin Roots with Two Forms
Students will be able to:
- Identify word origins and derivations.

Unit 6: Adjective Suffixes
Students will be able to:
- Use knowledge of roots, affixes, synonyms, antonyms, and homophones to determine the meaning of new words.

Unit 7: Paired Noun and Adjective Suffixes
Students will be able to:

Students will be able to:

Unit 9: Paired Latin and Greek Roots
Students will be able to:

Unit 10: Roots with Four or More Forms
Students will be able to:
