Melanie Kadlic Meren (She/Her) began serving her first term as the Hunter Mill representative on the Fairfax County School Board on January 1, 2020. Her term expires 2023.

Meren is dedicated to all children being educated for their own personal success that cultivates their paths beyond school and into adulthood. She is committed to fortifying our teaching force with professional supports so that all children, especially those with special needs, reach their potential. Meren seeks to ensure that students and staff have safe, human-centered spaces and facilities that inspire education and create connections among school, community, and the natural environment. She is devoted to fostering environmental stewardship in student learning and FCPS’ practices.

Meren holds a lifelong passion for promoting strong schools to make strong communities. Her career in education public policy and programming spans decades and has provided her with a deep understanding of public education. Serving at the U.S. Department of Education at the dawn of No Child Left Behind in 2002, she oversaw millions of dollars in early childhood education and professional development programs serving the nation’s most vulnerable children. For well over a decade since, she has been a communications, organizational management, and public policy professional in public education work. She is an active PTA member and school community volunteer.

Prior to her election in 2019, Meren served on and co-chaired the School Board’s Human Resources Advisory Committee, charged with exploring teacher retention efforts; the Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee; and the #IamFCPS parent-led grassroots effort to fully fund the FCPS budget.

She and her husband have two children in FCPS, and have lived in Fairfax since 2005. Meren holds a Master’s in Public Policy from Duke University and a Bachelor’s in Political Science from the University at Albany, State University of New York. In 2018, she completed the University of Virginia’s Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership.
