Marie Lemmon became the assistant superintendent of the Department of School Improvement and Supports (DSIS) in December 2023.

Lemmon is an outstanding educational leader with over 20 years of experience in our schools.  She is passionate about serving all communities within Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), and particularly those in high poverty schools where she has achieved marked improvement in student achievement.

Lemmon began her career as a teacher in Prince George's County Public Schools, then moved to FCPS where she was a teacher, assistant principal at two FCPS schools, then principal at Mount Vernon Woods Elementary and Bailey’s Elementary. In 2014 Ms. Lemmon led the opening of Bailey’s Upper Elementary School. Her schools have been recipients of the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Continuous Improvement award and the FCPS Excellence in Equity award.  She successfully led two elementary schools out of state sanction.

Lemmon is known for creating and supporting strong teacher leadership, improving school climates, and addressing staff needs, which resulted in high teacher retention and are reflected in annual surveys.  She is highly skilled at developing leaders through coaching, mentoring, and modeling.  She has been a leader in the Fairfax Association of Elementary School Principals (FAESP). She has served as the Potomac Zone Director for Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals (VAESP), a pyramid lead in Region 2, and has participated in many other FCPS and state work groups.  She has presented at FCPS , State and National conferences.

Lemmon holds a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Juniata College and a master's in Education Leadership from George Mason University.
