Superintendent's Weather Message for 12/15/22

Message from Dr. Michelle Reid

Hello Team FCPS,

Fairfax County is under a weather advisory on Thursday, December 15, from 1 a.m. until 1 p.m. With the possibility of dangerous road conditions and walkways, we will be adjusting our schedule tomorrow. With freezing rain in the forecast, it is important for us all to be prepared, especially our youngest drivers who may not have experienced dangerous road conditions. Please consider encouraging student drivers to take school transportation if at all possible.

All Fairfax County public schools and school offices will open two hours late on Thursday, December 15, 2022.

  • Morning preschool (special education) classes are canceled.
  • Afternoon preschool classes start on their regular schedule.
  • Full-day preschool (special education) and Family and Early Childhood Education Program/Head Start classes start two hours later than the regular schedule.
  • Morning field trips are canceled.
  • Morning transportation for high school academy classes is canceled. Transportation for afternoon academy classes will be provided.
  • Adult High School and GED courses will start two hours late.
  • Adult and Community Education (ACE) classes will start on time.
  • SACC centers will open at 8 a.m.
  • Central Offices will open to the public at 10 a.m.
  • Central Office employees may report two hours later than their regular scheduled time, but no later than 10 a.m.

Here are additional resources and tips to help you prepare for winter weather:

  • Practice safe driving. Plan out your route ahead of time, make sure your car is clear of snow or ice, and drive slower. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration shares more winter weather driving tips.
  • Stock your car with necessary items such as an ice scraper, blanket, shovel, cell phone charger, and flashlight. The Virginia Department of Transportation has some great suggestions for preparing an emergency supply kit for your vehicle.
  • Ready.gov has an extensive webpage about preparing for winter weather. Learn more about what different weather alerts mean, how to protect yourself, and home safety.
  • Don’t forget your pets! The American Red Cross has some tips for caring for your pets as well as general information.
  • If you want to learn even more, check out the CDC’s guide to preparing for a winter storm.

We will continue to monitor the weather conditions.
