Falls Church High culinary students put their skills to use days ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, baking dozens of pies for sale to school staff and families.

The forty students enrolled in Culinary 1 and Culinary 2 classes made pumpkin, pecan, old fashioned apple and dutch apple pies that are available for pick-up at the school Tuesday, Nov. 23.

The pie sale, which has been a tradition for more than eight years, took last year off due to the pandemic, instructor Dustin Payne said. The pie exercise teaches students how to follow recipes, measure appropriately, use appropriate safety, sanitation and knife skills, as well as the importance of packaging and marketing in the food industry, Payne says.

Students also gain a bit of knowledge on food costs and how to calculate profit, he adds. Most pies sell for $8, he said, except pecan, which retails for $10.
