Callahan Rogers, a 2023 graduate of Cedar Lane School, has been selected as the recipient of the 2023 Fairfax County School Board Character Award.

Rogers is recognized by nominators as an “exceptional student, who is known as a leader and is a source of inspiration for his fellow students,” and who during his time at Cedar Lane School “demonstrated a positive attitude, strong integrity, and was someone who was always willing to help others.”

In addition to maintaining a 4.0 grade point average, Rogers was the captain of the basketball team, as well as editor and photographer of the school yearbook and newspaper. He also played guitar, drums, bass, and piano in the school’s winter and spring music shows.

Rogers has also been recognized for his stellar sportsmanship, on and off the court, by his peers, coaches, and school staff.

An example of Rogers’ sportsmanship happened on a school field trip where a younger student was being harshly criticized because he missed a last second shot in a game the team lost. Rogers defused the situation by stating, “We’re a team! We ALL lose, or we ALL win! It’s not just one person.”

According to nominators, Rogers has shown “great potential for continued academic success by attending FCPS’ Teachers for Tomorrow Academy class and aspires to become a special education elementary teacher. In math class at Cedar Lane, he frequently took the initiative to help several students who were having a hard time with the material. As editor of the yearbook, he served as a model for younger students, and enjoyed helping the teacher instruct them about basic production skills.

The School Board Character Award was established by the Student Advisory Council in 2001. It is  given to a junior or senior who demonstrates a continuous record of high morals, strong integrity, and good character, and who is recognized as a role model for students in Fairfax County Public Schools. The Apple Federal Credit Union Education Foundation has funded the $500 award since 2007.
