Fine Arts Overview

Fine and Performing Arts ... where every child discovers value, vision, and voice.

The Fine Arts program in FCPS provides a comprehensive, sequential, and cumulative arts education for students in grades K-12. Elementary art and general music instruction are provided to all students in kindergarten through grade 6. String orchestra instruction is offered at the elementary level beginning in 4th grade and band instruction is offered in 5th grade.  At the middle and high school levels, a wide range of elective course offerings in dance, music, theatre, and visual art are available for students. The K-12 fine arts programs promote the development of Portrait of a Graduate attributes by encouraging students to become critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, and effective communicators. .

The FCPS School Board sponsors three fine and performing arts field trips annually. Fourth graders attend the National Symphony Orchestra’s Young People’s Concert at the Kennedy Center; sixth graders visit one of four museums: National Gallery of Art, National Portrait Gallery, American Art Museum, or National Museum of the American Indian; seventh grade theater students attend a live theatrical performance at one of the many professional theaters in the Washington, D.C. metro area.
