Outstanding School-based Leader, Finalists, and School Recipients

The outstanding school-based leaders recognized at 2017 FCPS Honors

2017 Outstanding School-based Leader

Sarah Beck, Academic Dean, Glasgow Middle School, Region 2a picture of sarah beck

Sarah was so successful in her first effort at leading schoolwide change in 2015 – the redesign and relaunch of Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) plan at Glasgow – that she was asked to share her methods with all of Region 2. Promoted to academic dean, she’s since tackled learning targets to improve instruction and worked with a group developing literacy initiatives. Colleagues say Sarah combines energy and authenticity with an innate ability to take different perspectives and see how they fit into the bigger picture. “Mrs. Beck is a natural leadership coach,” said a supervisor, “and the kind of person who makes everyone around her better.”

2017 Outstanding School-based Leader Finalist

Tiffany Bryant, School Counselor, Herndon Elementary School, Region 1a picture of tiffany bryant

In 22 years as a school counselor at Herndon Elementary, Tiffany has sought to ensure students have what they need to succeed. To achieve this, she’s gone well beyond her job description, partnering with corporations to get supplies for the Title 1 school, and creating novel programs like “Mr. Manners” to provide male mentors for boys who were acting out in class. But she’s best known for the annual Herndon Career Fair, which she started two decades ago. She’s brought in NFL football players, political figures, lawyers, doctors, taxidermists and other professionals to help inspire students to think about their futures. Colleagues say Tiffany sets high expectations but remains the biggest cheerleader for her kids. “She is such an asset and integral part of our school community,” said one, “that I can’t imagine Herndon without her.”

2017 Outstanding School-based Leader Finalist

Kristen Rucinski, Assistant Principal, Gunston Elementary School, Region 3a picture of kristen rucinski

Kristen is responsible for transforming reading instruction at Gunston, which has boosted test scores 20 percent over the past few years. She also spearheaded the effort to revamp the referral process, which increased instructional time and led to a 50 percent reduction in students being sent to the office. Kristen prioritizes being in the classroom to give teachers feedback. This has been transformative for many. “Her imprint on my teaching has led me not only to have impressive SOL scores and significant student achievement, said one teacher, “but has redefined what leading by example means.” Colleagues say she is a guiding presence who fosters a family-like climate at a diverse school with students from over 25 countries.

2017 Outstanding School-based Leader Finalist

Margaret Sisler, School Based Technology Specialist, Chantilly High School, Region 5a picture of margaret sisler

Margaret, best known as @TechyMargaret, has a gift for making technology accessible to everyone. At Chantilly, she developed a model to implement FCPSOn that changed the culture of the school and has been replicated countywide. Since people learn differently, she uses multiple social media tools, distributing sketchnotes, blogs and newsletters as well as moderating a Twitter edchat where teachers nationwide discuss instructional strategies. Both teachers and students praise Margaret for meeting them where they are and helping demystify the tech world. Said one student: “She taught me that assisting others with technology is not about who has the most knowledge, but about your people skills and how well you treat others.”

2017 Outstanding School-based Leader Finalist

Amy Soos, Assessment Coach, Lake Braddock Secondary School, Region 4a picture of amy soos

Amy is a champion of the students who struggle most. In addition to administering more than 10,000 student assessments each year, she’s the driving force behind Bruin Pride, Lake Braddock’s Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS). She also works with the school’s literacy program. Colleagues say Amy builds incredible rapport with kids and their families, and her “never give up on a student” attitude is contagious. A few years ago, when an ESOL student left school without getting a diploma, Amy tracked the girl down at her job and convinced her to do remediation. The student later passed the SOLs and was able to get the credits she needed to graduate. “Amy is a force of nature,” said a coworker. “She is passionate, dedicated, innovative, and a relentless believer in all things being possible.”
