Opportunities to substitute at a single work location

Description

  • Site-based substitutes are responsible for instructing students in an elementary, middle, or high school setting serving special education, English as a Second Language, advanced academics, and resource classes, including Art, Music, Physical Education, Library, World Language, and/or other content area classes.
  • Site-based substitutes assume responsibility for all aspects of classroom instruction, assessments, and behavior management on a short-term or long-term basis. Implements teacher-created lesson plans or works collaboratively with a team of educators to generate lesson plans, providing differentiated strategies to instruct students at all levels in all content areas.
  • Site-based substitutes will be assigned to one school and will be expected to report to that school daily.

Salary and Benefits

  • Site-based substitutes earn $25.61 per hour. 
  • Site-based substitutes will be offered the option of enrolling in FCPS health programs, including medical and dental. They will also be able to participate in the FCPS 403(b) Deferred Compensation Retirement Savings Plan. 
    • Please note that there is not a retiree pay band for this position.*
  • Site-based substitutes must average 30 hours per week to be eligible for benefits.

Qualifications

  • Current teacher substitutes, student monitors, and hourly employees.
  • Applicants who meet one of the following criteria:
    • College transcripts reflecting 30 or more credits, or
    • Accepted into an accredited educational preparatory program within a college/university’s school of education, or
    • Completed a high school teacher preparatory course, like Teachers for Tomorrow or Educators Rising, or
    • Been employed as an Instructional Assistant for at least one school year in a K12 organization, or 
    • Have one full year of experience teaching preschool or in a school-aged childcare program.

Substitute Information Sessions

We hold weekly virtual information sessions during the school year for external candidates looking to learn more about becoming a substitute teacher or a substitute instructional assistant.

  • The virtual sessions are held weekly on Wednesdays from 2-3 p.m. Candidates will receive an email link to the session on the Monday before.
