Central Office

Gina North, Willow Oaks Admin Center

"Gina North is an amazing person! It all started a year ago when she was in my classroom helping me set up my reading classes when we started talking about the need for a clothing pantry at Kilmer. Gina brought in the first set of clothes for the Kilmer clothing pantry, and she came back to Kilmer after hours and helped us at the pantry! Gina is still involved with the clothing pantry at Kilmer a year later by bringing in donations from her home as well as from her neighbors and coworkers. The Kilmer Pantry is very thankful for Gina's support. Gina works in the Office of Special Education Instruction and has MANY schools and teachers to work with. She has come to my classroom to help support my instruction last year and currently this year. I email Gina for help and she immediately writes me back offering many different dates and times to come to Kilmer. She is a very busy woman, but always takes the time needed to help even if it means coming back for another visit. I always feel super supported by Gina. Gina is the kindest and most caring especially when she provides feedback. She is ready to help in any situation and if she isn't able to solve the problem, she reaches out to her coworkers to see if they are able to solve the problem. Fairfax County needs more people like Gina, she definitely goes above and beyond. Whoever works with/alongside her, is truly blessed!"

Heather Murphy and Caroline Taylor, Jefferson Tech HS 

"Heather, Caroline and Kent have been a major support to the Clothing Pantry at Kilmer Middle School. Heather put out an email to the Athletic Trainers in Fairfax County saying that Kilmer is starting a Clothing Pantry to go along with their Food Pantry and needed gently used items. Heather, Caroline and Kent donated many boxes of clothes, along with school supplies. Heather makes a monthly donation of brand new clothes for the pantry and keeps spreading the word of our current needs to her coworkers. Mary Wittrock, Langley HS 

"Madame Wittrock is incredible! Not only is she a phenomenal French teacher but she graciously took on being my daughter‘s advisor as she began a new club geared towards supporting the homeless in our community. Being a club advisor is no simple task; she volunteered to have donation boxes placed in her room, attend/supervise after school meetings and give advice to my daughter and her “board”. Everything Madame Wittrock does is with a happy heart. She is gracious, kind and inspirational. We are SO fortunate to have her at Langley!"

Amy Vallath, Chesterbrook ES

"We are a new family to FCPS, a military transfer from Florida brought us to CES. The transition to the new school environment has been challenging for my 3rd and 5th grader. Ms. Vallath has gone out of her way to connect with my kiddos in ways in which, I'm certain, are not part of her job description. She has listened to me, to them, and their teachers to troubleshoot ideas that may ease their transition. She has kept in close contact with me and made sure to 'notice' my kids where they are at, aka new students in a new town, new school and new social/academic environment. We are so grateful for her understanding and guidance. Her acts of determination and kindness have gifted my kiddos the chance to find their groove at their new school."

Ana Mack, Sandburg MS (Pictured) - View the celebration!

"Ana Mack is an exemplary employee who personifies the best that FCPS has to offer. Although her job title is Administrative Assistant to the Principal, she is covering the job responsibilities of multiple positions this year in the absence of much needed support staff around the building. One of the tasks she is taking on is filling in for our lack of a Family Liaison. Sandburg has a large Hispanic population with families who require communication in Spanish. Many of these families struggle with technology or written communication skills, so personal phone calls are frequently the only means of getting messages to them about their student. Ms. Mack is always willing to go the extra mile and make these phone calls to support our students and their families, and help teachers communicate with them. She is all about supporting all of us every day. It is refreshing to see a staff member whose answer to requests for help is, "Yes, I can help you."

Robert Vavredge, Rolling Valley ES - View the celebration!

"After missing the beginning of the school year due to Covid and another infection right after, my child refused to go back to school. When we were finally able to get her to school, she refused to go in the door, pulling away and crying inconsolably. Fortunately, Mr. Vavredge, who was on bus duty that morning, noticed the difficulty I was facing, he walked over, talked to her about her interests, and did his best to convince her to come in. She finally agreed to go in if I dropped her off in class. Mr. Vavredge accompanied us, and then my daughter later informed me that he had sat with her while she drew pictures and situated herself in class that morning. We faced the same issue the next day, and Mr. Vavredge walked over with a poppet toy and managed to get her to walk in with him. Again, he had helped situate her by giving her something to draw. My daughter is now back to school without any issues thanks to the initiatives of her class teacher and Mr. Vavredge, and I am so very grateful to Mr. Vavredge for being there when I truly needed the support. In general, I have noticed how much the students like Mr. Vavredge, there is so much excitement when they see him, and I appreciate there being teachers like him at Rolling Valley."

Desirae Jackson, Eagle View ES 

"Ms. Jackson has given voice to an EL student in the classroom using the Google Translate app. A student who came from Russia two days after school started was very active and showed frustration in many challenging ways. When Ms. Jackson started using the Google translate app to communicate with this student, the student's behavior started to change. He uses the translate app to communicate his needs and wants, and Ms. Jackson has done a phenomenal job of building positive relationships with this student and his family. Despite the language barrier, Ms. Jackson notices the strengths of this student and continues to provide him with what he needs. Ms. Jackson's effort to build a positive relationship with this student and communicate with the student constantly has given the student confidence to learn at school. Not only did her use of the Google translate app supported her in communicating with the student, but it also gave a voice to the student. The moment this student heard her tell the student that he was doing a good job and that she was proud of her through an app, the student's eyes lit up. Throughout the first quarter, I have seen tremendous growth in this student, both socially and academically. This student's love of learning and confidence are the results of Ms. Jackson's genuine care and love for this student. She truly meets every child where they are at."

Other FCPS Cares of the Month Recipients

Debbie Metzker, Frost MS 

"The worst thing I can say about Debbie Metzker is that some day, she will have to leave Frost. Our school without her is The Sound of Music without Julie Andrews, The Grand Old Opry without country. It doesn't make sense. Fortunately, Debbie has insisted she won't be leaving any time soon, that she's a Frost lifer. Also, when she eventually does, those she’s affected will still use her as a role model. I know I will. Future students in the afterschool program will continue to learn from Mrs. Metzker. Three key things we've learned from Debbie are Commitment, Adaptability, and Tenacity, a fitting acronym considering her six(!) cats.No one can argue her commitment. Debbie started at Frost as an IA in 1993 and is still here, 29 years later. Every June, for almost a decade, she stayed at Frost until 11pm on a Friday night. She was determined to keep the Friday night lock-ins for students to become better friends and citizens. She has remained devoted to the afterschool program, a program that last quarter topped out at 41 clubs. People who are driven often have trouble being adaptable. Not Debbie. She never makes a big deal of a minor issue; she never lets a student life lesson get tangled in red tape. She’s also streamlined the process for time sheets and kept the highest possible pay bands during budget cuts. In terms of SOLs, she’s maintained test security with minimal meetings. She values our time, so we value her. Last but not least, Debbie has tenacity. It can’t be easy to manage that many clubs in our building, a building that has pumped hot air when it's hot, cold air when it's cold, and now resembles a conveyor belt. If anyone deserves to see the completion of the renovation next year, it's her. On one level, the day Debbie retires will be a sad one. It will also be happy, people will finally have a chance to win the Ugly Sweater Contest at the Holiday Party! Being serious though, it will give us a chance to celebrate to look back on what she's done and all we can do to preserve her legacy."

Robin Pickholtz , Frost MS

"There’s an old adage that if you want to be successful at a school, make sure you get along with the assistants in the front office. Robin Pickholtz flips the adage to perfection. Streams of students, parents, staff members, community members, and delivery people come to her desk, and she seems to get along with all. Over the years, this has included a parent screaming that the school is responsible for the rain and mud on her daughter’s shoes, a student unleashing more curses than HBO’s fall lineup, and teacher after teacher who can’t seem to remember to take attendance. In these and many other cases, Robin remains calm and encouraging. The value of this cannot be underestimated. The first face and voice in the school being believably friendly makes a difference. The ‘believable’ aspect is key. Interactions with her never feel false; she puts on no airs. She’s upbeat, down-to-earth, and funny, qualities that often end up being taken on by those she talks to. Robin’s influence extends beyond her attitude. Her actions improve the lives of those around her. She goes out of her way to write email responses about the Frost Spelling Bee, the musical, the student-faculty tournaments, and the 5K. These aren’t generic thanks or empty exclamation points. She includes specific details from the events, so the staff know they’ve made an impact. Last but not least is Robin’s ability to connect with some of the least likely students. Often, students seated in the office are anxious, for understandable reasons. When appropriate, without excusing misbehavior, she acknowledges them. Whatever someone did, they deserve dignity, and she provides it. This was especially true for her mentee one year in the Mentor Program, a particularly squirrelly/endearing student. He made genuine improvements over the course of the year. After he graduated, his mom returned, thanking Robin and offering to help future students. I doubt the mentee will become an administrative assistant in the future. Unless the school wanted to turn attendance into Choose Your Own Adventure, that would not be wise. Whatever he ends up as, I guarantee he will be better off, as we all are, because he met Robin."

Caryn Jackson, Frost MS 

"Picture this…Classes are over, and you're about to finish the plan for tomorrow. You get an email saying a science teacher has to be absent and cannot find a sub. Not ideal, but it’s manageable, you’ll adjust. An hour later, you're about to close your computer. You hear an Outlook ping. Twice. Two English teachers are now sick and need to miss class. You text four people, cross your fingers, and head home. Once at the house, you glance at your phone. Four new texts, five new emails. It looks like an IA will have to attend an in-service, two teachers will need coverage for a staffing event, and three will need coverage for a rescheduled IEP. Despite everything, by 9pm, you manage it. You work it OUT. You do a little victory dance. YES. Experience tells you to be cautious, but you deserve to celebrate. Then . . .10pm, 11pm, and 4:20, 5:20, 6:20,and 7:20 the next morning. 6 additional issues to account for. Technically, Administrative Assistant / Sub Coordinator Caryn Jackson is not a teacher, but she could teach a masterclass in organization and resilience. No matter what wild loops are thrown at her each day (and night and early morning), she works it out. One Thursday last May, there were 19 unavoidable absences, including 11 without subs. Miraculously, though, by the time students arrived, there were adults for every student in every classroom! Even more remarkable that Caryn could make it happen while still seeming calm, friendly, and happy to be there. I don't know many others who could manage to do both. Frost is lucky to have her."

Theresa Gregory, Frost MS 

"Being an instructional assistant means you have to wear a lot of hats, hats you often have to knit yourself in the hallway between C and D lunch. For 20+ years, Theresa has been a remarkable seamstress. I am not sure there is a class she has not supported or an afterschool club she has not moderated. LD, CAT-B, PE, DIT, CSS, ISS: you name it, she’s done it. Chat Club, Pokemon Club, Poetry Club, Game Club, Game Zone: the list goes on. She's one of only two staff members I know who have moderated clubs five days a week for more than a decade. It’s not a matter of quantity, she brings quality to whatever she does. Several times when the afterschool specialist has been absent, she has trusted Theresa to oversee the whole program. When I transitioned to an IA position, she was the first person I looked to. She soon delivered, sharing a six-page sub plan that became the model I used in the future years. She has been a valuable sounding board and cheerleader in the years since then. I know this support has extended far beyond me.  Any teacher in the science department, student in Cooking Club, or IA in her revamped IA lounge can tell you what she's meant to them. I cannot knit to save my life, but if I were to stitch something for a hat, it'd be this: “Theresa Gregory, as fierce and friendly as they come. An assistant who became a leader.”

Shakil White, Frost MS 

"Shakil White came to Frost and saved the day. Check that; he saved a month’s worth of days. Before Shakil arrived, special ed was stretched thin. We’re a tough group, made of unusually firm rubber, but at a certain point, pull a band that far, and it’s going to break. Thankfully, he arrived and made an immediate difference. He was resourceful, flexible, and able to leap in and fill whatever (often-difficult) role that was needed. That meant relief in math, science, civics, Strategies, Adaptive PE, and most importantly, the bathroom. His ability to handle the students and subject matter in multiple classes was appreciated. The true coup was his bathroom support, how quickly he became the most efficient, reliable person to help there. Needing two people on call at any time to meet students' physical needs is a formidable challenge. Lunch breaks, lunch support, absences, escorts, coverages, limited classes, limited communication, and physical limitations make bathroom coordination a minefield. With Shakil, there are almost never mines. He's there, he gets it done, and even to a degree, makes it fun. It's no party, but being able to glide into the room, out of the chair, onto the lift, onto the toilet, and back in world-record time is genuinely satisfying. It turns what could be a tedious, awkward process for all involved into an accomplishment, 6 minutes and 57 seconds! As Shakil continues at Frost, I'm sure the accomplishments will continue. His upbeat personality, sense of humor, and ability to relate to students and staff are genuine assets. Getting through a particular period has been an adventure and a half for everyone this year. Any time Shakil has come in to sub, that period has become more manageable/enjoyable. He's made an impact."

Sarah Pennington, Wilton Woods Center

"Sarah helped me with obtaining notarized records for a relative. She was so very helpful throughout the process. I dealt with her via email and phone calls several times. She provided clear instructions, timely responses and was very pleasant with every interaction. I sincerely appreciated her outstanding customer service, which unfortunately is not something that is always experienced. She is an asset to the school system. Thank you, Sarah!! She is the best!"

Stephanie Pollack, Woodson HS 

"I work as an academic coach for students in 3 of the local high schools. Last Thursday I requested a meeting between Ms. Pollack and a student with whom I work. I was struck by the lengths to which Ms. Pollack went to make my student feel heard, respected, and supported. Ms. Pollack not only honored the student's special needs, but also offered her own time during which the student could come to her classroom to work on assignments. It can be difficult for this student to reach out for help and self-advocate, but this experience with Ms. Pollack will strengthen that ability because of her responsiveness and generosity. With all teachers have to contend with right now, Ms. Pollack deserves much recognition."

Constantine Krouskas, Stonecroft Transportation Center

"Mr. Constantine is truly an amazing bus driver. He has been our bus driver since our now 3d grader was a kindergartener, and he was so generous in helping the little ones learn how to ride the bus. He manages an entire busload of excited children, and to pick up and drop off the students on time and safely all with a smile on his face! Thank you, Mr. Constantine, for everything you do!"

"When I arrived to the Welcome Center, Ms. Palomino greeted me warmly. I was early for an appointment and I asked if she had time to share with me how she supports families coming in. As she explained the process, I thought: "I would feel so cared for at every turn if I was a new family coming in. " Her kindness, expertise, demeanor and collaborative spirit shone through with every passing moment. The depth of her understanding of the barriers some of our families are facing inspired me. Ms. Palomino, thank you for your hospitality! Thank you for your compassion and the way you welcome each person, helping to support families each step of the way!!"

"Dr. Keenan is an exceptional orchestra teacher who goes above and beyond for her students and the Lake Braddock Pyramid. This past Thursday, she helped to coordinate a performance of 80 Elementary students on the High School Orchestra Concert. She is a mentor and role model to all strings teachers in the LB pyramid, and we are so lucky to have her on our team!"

"As a family, we recently had to make a difficult decision about my senior's schedule. Mrs. Carey, you stopped for a second and thought about my daughter's best interest. We really appreciate her taking the time to give us important information and making my daughter a priority. Thinking about what she likes best and where she could be most successful academically. I recently changed jobs and it has been a very busy year for me. Therefore, I have not had time to research and pay more attention to my daughter's student needs. "De Lauria epitomizes the term team player and has been the rock of the Student Services suite at South County during a hectic time. As our transcript assistant, she has managed to ensure a seamless process for our seniors, while also providing vital support during our extended registrar vacancy. She assists the attendance office, supports our SIA, testing, and the clinic, and does it all with a smile! Her pumpkin bars are just an added bonus!  Thank you De!"

"I would like to thank Margaret and William for welcoming me on their field trip to Mount Vernon’s Situation Room Experience. Mount Vernon has created an immersive and impactful learning experience for students. Margaret was able to secure a scholarship for their students to attend for free. Students were engaged for the duration of the 70-minute simulation and during their debrief exhibited learning about George Washington, events during his tenure as president, and lessons in leadership. Margaret and William’s commitment to their students provided them with a unique learning experience. Hayfield and FCPS are lucky to have educators like Margaret and William!"

Emily Tobin, Courtney Cottrell, Jennifer Stewart, and Megan Mott, Deer Park ES

"My 6th grade daughter, who is on the autism spectrum and has debilitating anxiety, has been struggling with school refusal this year. Bob D’Amato and the 6th grade team at Deer Park Elementary have been great in accommodating my daughter’s unique needs, but there are four educators in particular who have been going above and beyond the call of duty in order to support my daughter, me, and my family as a whole. Emily Tobin, Courtney Cottrell, Jennifer Stewart, and Megan Mott care about my daughter as a whole person, not just as a student. They have been tailoring creative solutions to address my daughter’s academic, emotional, social, and sensory needs, often giving up free time they might have to eat lunch with her, giving her individualized attention so she is able to better understand and complete her work, collaborating with her therapist to create plans to best help her, and investing time in her to foster relationships as a teacher mentor and trusted adults. When my daughter’s school refusal began, Ms. Tobin proposed meeting with my daughter in order to hear directly from her what was bothering her, what she needed, and to collaborate with her on solutions to meet those needs. Along with her language arts teacher, these four educators sat with my daughter and me for nearly 3 hours, spending the majority of the time simply listening to her concerns, making sure that her feelings were validated, and asking her opinion about solutions to address her concerns. While we are not yet out of the woods, I have every confidence that Ms. Tobin, Ms. Cottrell, Ms. Stewart, and Ms. Mott will never give up. They have been incredible in their unfailing kindness and empathy, reserving any judgment as they work with me to support my daughter."

"Patrick observed that a co-worker had a flat tire in the parking lot after school. He sought out the co-worker, changed their tire to the spare, and escorted them to the tire store to ensure they made it safely. Patrick consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty, and has a work ethic that is unmatched."

Celine Sinclair-Peebles, Grants GED Fairfax

"Ms. Celine Peebles is by far one of the hardest workers in Fairfax County and I strongly believe she deserves recognition for all her hard work. She helped me realize my potential, and she gave me the confidence to chase my dreams. She listened to me talk about what career I was interested in, and what I really wanted to do in life, and she walked me through what I had to do to get into the college I wanted to go to, and the steps I had to take to study abroad in New Zealand. Before I attended this GED program and met wonderful people like Ms. Peebles and her wonderful colleague Ms. Blizzard, I didn't have much hope for my future, and thought I was doomed to live a life of mediocrity. I cannot stress how much she has helped me and the other students at the ISAEP program in figuring out what we want to do in life and how to achieve it. Thanks to her and Ms. Blizzard, I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel."

"After a colleague went home sick, Mr. Minh graciously offered her students a place to work after school. Some students needed to retake an assessment while another student needed support from missing a few classes. Mr. Minh went above and beyond to make sure her students finished the quarter on a high note. We are so fortunate to have Mr. Minh in the West Potomac math department!"

"Ms. Postlethwait has inspired both of my kids in her geometry class. She makes an effort to get to know students, takes students' needs into consideration, as well as creates a fun but also challenging learning environment. Each class she provides a story to connect with her students and incorporates something "fun" into the day. Coming from an 8th grade boy that speaks volumes. Both of my kids say she is their BEST teacher in middle school. Students can tell she loves her job and we appreciate the many "extras" she brings to the geometry classroom. Thank you for your service to our learning community."

"Imagine my surprise when my phone rings and it is my son's math Teacher. Mrs. Perry reached out to me and my son. He had sent her and email and she called to help him through a tough day in class. She spoke to him about how to work on his studying and what he could do to gain knowledge that he was missing. She spoke to him as a equal, not just teacher to student. From the conversation I had with her I knew she was caring and was looking out for my son. Then I got to listen to her interaction with my son and it was amazing how she was able to reach him. He listened to her advice, but it didn't end there. She took the time to really hear him and she spoke words of encouragement. He left that phone call feeling heard and empowered. I am so grateful for Mrs. Perry!"

She represented FCPS, and as a result KJMS, very well in speaking with and advising a family on a situation we had here at school. She then reached out to let us know that she could be a support in the future with any Arabic-speaking family. I know she went above and beyond, and I appreciate her!"

"Congratulations on earning your first Lexia level completion certificate!" Pride stretches across the face and floods the room of a second grade student who began the year believing he would never be recognized for the achievement he is now holding in his hand. What turned his feeling of defeat into one of accomplishment? The support, guidance, an enthusiasm of his teacher, Katie Lee Yang. Katie is seasoned professional new to Fairfax County Schools this year. She excels at creating engaging lessons which combine technology with content knowledge and engage her energetic class of diverse learners physically and cognitively. Her classroom is full of laughter, learning, and self-confidence. Katie is also a master of relationship building. She takes the time to get to know her students personally and coordinates her support staff to leverage their strengths. As a result, everyone who joins the class feels the power of potential which comes from seeing individual work supported and encouraged through teamwork. Gail Schiefelbein, Frost MS 

"Gail Schiefelbein is an outstanding teacher. She never draws attention to herself, I'm not sure many staff members outside English and Special Ed know who she is, but it's 100% true. Gail's gift is to make others better. She's been my team teacher, I've been her IA, and I've seen her with any number of colleagues and students. In each of those interactions, the people she's surrounded by improve. She's the rising tide that lifts all boats. That she's able to accomplish this is no small feat because adult collaborations can be tricky, and small-group English classes are almost always filled with students who are used to 'being bad' at English. How then does she achieve it? Empathy, honesty, and hyper-competence. She starts virtually every class by asking students and adults in the room to share weekend plans, what happened over the weekend, anything they're looking forward to. It's not a manufactured icebreaker, there are no cutesy emojis, it's just people talking, a community that learns to care. She then includes books, clips, and games that kids like and invites IAs into every part of the process. Gail often sends IAs materials beforehand, mentions them in sub plans, provides full Pear Decks, and shows tests results. This unusual level of inclusion yields huge results. Most small-group English kids come in not liking reading. I don't know a single kid who hasn't liked Ghost. When they see two adults whip back and forth page by page, why wouldn't they? Students aren't being told Books Are Great; they're being shown a great story. A final reason for Gail's success is her competence. She is never in-your-face about it, but she is always on point. During virtual learning, she could flick in and out of nine student docs and three breakout rooms without skipping a beat. During Scrabble, Kahoot, and Word Generator, she is able to pleasantly crush all before her. She's able to turn several students you wouldn't expect to be into fierce competitors. They aren't often able to beat her (nor am I?!), but she enhances our game. We have to strive. Lastly, during writing prompt prep, she was able to take a student who repeatedly refused to write anything . . . and get him to write. I can generally get students to improve their behavior. Connection and deflection almost always work. This particular student seemed immovable. He was tapped out, and that was the end of it. Minutes later, though, there he was, beginning to write. She didn't yell at him, she didn't tell him how super-duper amazing he was, none of that. She was real with him, and he responded."

Brandon Bazan, Frost MS 

"At this point, Brandon Bazan is the Aaron Judge of Frost. When Brandon started at Frost in 2008, he did not have a ton of teaching experience or the most team-teaching / science knowledge. When Major League Baseball first drafted Judge in 2010, he wasn't selected until the 31st round, 934 players were deemed better than him! Yet, now, Judge is the league MVP, close to an all-time league record, and day in and day out, Brandon crushes home runs. Brandon's most consistent homers are the ways he accounts for every student. Most teachers keep tabs on their own subject. Brandon keeps tabs on math, science, history, civics, English, Spanish, PE, art, engineering, and FACS. Another exhausted Strategies teacher might accept a student's mumbled statement that they had no homework. Brandon is committed to the success of all his students, so he does his best to track Schoologies for all their classes. Initially, students learn they can't wriggle out of work; they need to take responsibility. Then, as they get into the habit of using their planner and seeing progress, they start to feel ownership. Performance improves and, with it, confidence. It would be inaccurate to suggest this is the path for all of Brandon's students. Kids accept, resist, strive, fall, and rise again. Throughout the process, however, few doubt that Brandon is in their corner, that he genuinely cares. How could they when Brandon volunteered to hold three hours of office hours during virtual learning? How could they when he took on a profoundly difficult period this year and managed to stay composed and upbeat throughout? The final reason for Brandon's success is his treatment of colleagues. On that count, he hits it out of the park -- 408 feet, dead center. If a tech issue comes up, he's the first to dart into someone's room to fix it. Every morning and afternoon PE has to set up equipment, he's in the gym, ready to lend a hand. He has no official connection to PE, he just . . . does it. In his own classroom, it's never fully his own. He gives IAs not just a voice and things to do, but an actual seat at the table. Doing so has benefited him, the IAs, and the students. By asking for their ideas, by placing faith in them, kids have mastered outlines for five-paragraph essays and learned "hello," "thank you," "what's up," and "my name is" in fifteen-plus languages. He's helped them grow. It remains to be seen how many home runs Aaron Judge will hit during his career. He hit 62 this year, the steroid-free league record. Brandon's record, however, is already settled. At the end of 2016, a student gave him a Greatest Teacher trophy. Years later, it’s hard to disagree."

Susan Victor, Frost MS 

"Susan Victor is a cat person. In class, she’s featured cat examples, pictures, and clips. She's also exhibits the best qualities cats possess. Metaphorically, when students come in each day, no matter what mood they're in, no matter what mood she's in, she purrs. She makes the effort to warmly welcome them because she cares about them and wants to help them learn. At the same time, if a certain student is purposely trying to distract the class, she's not afraid of a brief, authoritative hiss. Similarly, if a student is trying to avoid responsibility, she'll be the type of cat that will follow you around every room in the house. She'll arrange those Falcon Focus appointments; she'll send those reminder emails. Her students matter. Fortunately, there is one way Susan does not fit felines: she is not territorial. Whenever I've been her IA, she's invited me in. I'm included on the board, in sub plans, and in examples. I can offer feedback on students' journals, and we switch back and forth page after page when reading stories to the class. For a warmup, she used a sheet from a calendar I'd given her, a calendar related to, what else, cats. I mentioned Google Docs could make journals more visible than Google Slides, she changed formats, and beamed to students how pleased she was with the change. Coordinating with colleagues and corralling middle schoolers can be tough, a bit like herding cats. What better person than Susan then to take on the challenge!"

Heather Shue, Frost MS 

"If 8th grade LD science had a theme song, it would begin: "Heather Shue The Science Gal. Heattther Shuuue The Science Gallll. Heather! Heather! Heather! Heather!" Heather Shue is the closest Frost comes to Bill Nye. She jokes that she and Bill were a couple, but what they truly share is inspiration, making kids enjoy science, sometimes for the first time. Bill Nye definitely did that for me when I was a kid. I started science (especially lab) feeling helpless. I didn’t understand procedures, fell behind, and hated science as a result. When I discovered Bill Nye in 8th grade, it was a whole new world, colors, animations, songs, and an irrepressible enthusiasm that helped me learn and made me hungry for more. Heather Shue has done the same for Frost students. As an IA, you tend to hear everything kids say about classes. The subject with the most consistent complaints is science. That's not because there aren't great teachers, but there’s a ton of content and not a ton of time. Yet, I almost never hear complaints about Ms. Shue. The feedback is consistently positive. It's not hard to figure out why. Her PowerPoints are boxes of snack cereal, colorful, creative, and clear, every inch designed to keep your attention. Her teaching style is also less lecture than variety show. Time is taken to laugh at and celebrate some of the loopy stuff students come up with, so the material lands. The material also lands for me because she includes me. She consistently mentions IAs in class, calls on them, and texts them info. We are valued. I'll conclude with examples of two of her former students. First, she helped plan a surprise birthday party for a student who never expected it. He later described the party as the best day of his life. Second, many years ago, there was a student whose favorite sport seemed to be trashing school. One April, the student was giving her classmate an epic rant about how awful English, history, math, PE, and reading were. Her weary (though alert) classmate asked, "What about science?" The student paused. To maintain her reputation, she didn't offer specific praise. Her broad smile told the story however. Her expression fit Bill Nye’s famous phrase: "Science RULES."

Will Beekman, Frost MS 

"Frost is filled with great staff members. When some leave, it’s sad, but inevitable. Plus, there’s the consolation that there will always be others, fresh driven, caring, creative educators to pump new blood into the school. The reality is, however, after seeing 15 years of new people, I can safely say there won’t be another Will Beekman. His combination of irony and empathy has no equal. As long as he’s still here, though, let’s celebrate what he’s meant. And hey, if it doubles as some light extortion to ensure he stays, all the better! If there were a Frost version of Family Feud, and a category was Trait You Associate With Will Beekman, the number one answer would clearly be “funny.” This is a man who brings his class outside for a literal funeral for the words “thing” and “stuff.” He also has a “Beware: Attack Squirrel” sign attached to his classroom door. His replies to messages are legendary. One teacher said they’re the reason she checks her email. Same goes for me with CLT, his verbal responses made meetings worth attending. Will is clearly known and valued for his humor. He deserves as much credit for his humanity. With students, for example, he is committed to helping them be not just better test takers, but better people. Outside of class, he supports them in D+D, poetry, and The Spelling Bee. In class, he strives to make students well-rounded, deep, creative, critical thinkers who won't be unduly critical of those around them, who will not just tolerate idiosyncrasies but embrace them. Beekipedia, the Independent Reading Peep Project, and the Space Exploration Socratic Seminar fit the first three skills, Petruchio's Challenge the last one. Petruchio's Challenge goes beyond a connection to a colorful scene in Taming of the Shrew. If a respected teacher can wear a pink prom dress, and respected students can follow suit, that's acceptance. Last but not least is Will's commitment to his colleagues. He's spent years on FSAC, but it goes beyond that. On teacher workdays, or any day we're at work really, he's the first to stop by someone's room to fix a tech issue. Whenever I've needed help with a survey, student, or staff member, he's been the first to respond. I'm sure Fran, Jennifer, Kim, Stephanie, Carol, Katie, Laura, and any CLT member would say the same thing. The one thing he hasn't yet committed to is 2042. Staying another 20 years seems reasonable, doesn't it? If I can convince George Lucas to visit Falcon Focus, Tech to win its first championship, and Google to ban Comic Sans, maybe he'd agree to it? Fingers crossed."

Jenny Champagne, Frost MS 

"Jenny Champagne deserves FCPS Cares recognition because she goes out of her way to make people's days. She's said hi to me whenever we're in the hallway, wrote Zone cards when I've covered her classes, and offered to move her club so it wouldn't conflict with mine. I'm sure if you asked other staff members, they'd say the same. Considering all she's done for students, it seemed useful to hear from students. Here are the accounts of two former students.                                         “She was very good at helping you find your story. I was working on a piece to talk about recently renamed schools in FCPS, and she said that no step is too big to get the story done. I took that to heart, emailed teachers, and eventually got to interview the superintendent of the City of Fairfax. She is inspiration and truly cares about her students.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         “My experience with Mrs. Champagne has been super positive. Because I was enrolled in her English Honors, Creative Writing, and Falcon Focus I sometimes spent 4 1/2 hours with her in one day. I always looked forward to these days and now remember them fondly. Specifically, I recall a day where the Falcon Focus class was more rowdy than usual. I was working on my math homework in the corner amidst the noise; she came over and congratulated me for my tenacity. This moment struck a chord with seventh grade me who was really struggling in Algebra that first quarter of school. Mrs. Champagne validating my hard work is something I still remember.”

Amy Perina, Frost MS 

"Amy Perina does not love technology. She would not leap at the chance to use the latest snazzy new tool. Yet, this is a part of what makes her an outstanding teacher. First, it shows that Amy can turn anything into a strength. She may be predisposed to paper-pencil, but she has excelled any time I’ve seen her go beyond it. Navigating One Note, eCart, Google Drive, Pear Deck, projectors, and doc cams can be tricky, and I’ve seen them trip numerous people up, including me. During CLT meetings, Falcon Focus, class, and SOL prep, however, I’ve never seen that happen to Amy. She’s put in the effort for her kids and colleagues and made it work. Second, this leads to Amy’s greatest gift: her heart. Technology can bring us closer together, but it can also create distance, remove a bit of humanity. Amy is all about humanity, her warmth towards those around her is unparalleled. Ask students, parents, and staff who the nicest person at Frost is, and I’m confident the most common answer would be Amy Perina. Amy’s empathy has had a profound effect on 1000s of lives. 16 years ago, 75% of the Frost 7th grade English department were brand new teachers. I’m not sure how Will Beekman, Elisa Raddock, and I would have survived without her. She was our curriculum expert, instructional coach, and, just as often, grief counselor. It’s been reported that more than a third of first-year teachers quit. The fact that Will, Elisa, and I made it through that gauntlet and have continued for more than a decade, is a credit to her. During my time in English, Amy’s students were also the most consistent at passing the Reading SOL. Her picture-filled user-friendly review packets helped. The packets went on to be used across the CLT. Amy’s classes have also brought in more canned goods for charity than any other Frost classes. On a personal note, I would like to thank her for the Poet Tree and the Student Bee. Without her colorful, 100-plus-poem ‘tree,’ there never would have been Poetry Club. Without her distribution and follow up on the bee/activity survey, years of enrichment would be lost for hundreds of students. She may have been uneasy about the technology, about the Google Form format, but she soldiered through and, as usual, made an impact."

Boram Lee, Frost MS 

"Boram Lee is there for students and colleagues. She shows she cares by being honest, reliable, a good listener, and a good reactor. Sometimes that means tough love, and holding kids accountable. Students end up better off for it, knowing their work won't get a blind check mark. Someone will actually show them what they did well and what they can improve. A student comes to mind who was particularly challenging, a topic of teacher discussion and strategizing across content areas. Yet, in Boram's class, he thrived. He looked forward to it each day and asked other teachers if they could use strategies from science. Why not, since apparently “Mrs. Lee is awesome, awesome, awesome.” Boram got me through several wild years on Endeavor and the wildest summer ever in Reston. I still value her consultation about students I have in after school programs. She's remained loyal, insightful, and a source of endless laughter, a true friend."

Amanda Lockhart, Frost MS 

"Work at a school long enough, and problematic behaviors build up. Certain colleagues don't answer messages, take forever to answer messages, take offense, act defensive, get a swelled head, go over people’s heads, etc. Amanda Lockhart displays none of those behaviors. She answers everything, at blazing speed, takes things in context, accepts honest mistakes, and doesn't make a mountain of a molehill. She's straightforward and appreciative. It's remarkable that she's able to perform like this considering the wildness that's thrown at her. Over the years, I've seen Amanda handle kids who've bitten, slapped, stomped, scratched, fled, and perhaps hardest of all, shown few signs of direct communication. She’s been an upbeat pro through it all. My theory for how she’s been able to do it? Ovie. After Amanda’s beloved Capitals finally beat the Penguins in 2018, captain Alex Ovechkin offered these words, which may have subconsciously inspired her. “We believe in each other,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what happened in the past. We have to stick together. We knew it was there. We just had to battle, and we just had to fight through it. Great feeling right now, and we’re going forward.” Words (for Cat-B) to live by."

Susie Morningstar, Frost MS 

"In title, Susie Morningstar is Administrative Assistant to the Principal. In practice, Susie is Administrative Assistant to THE FROST WORLD. 1000s of staff, student, and parent forms pass through her each month. She swiftly sorts and tracks them all. She manages letters, copiers, MyTime, News You Choose, FSAC, PTA, flu shots, support gloves and the list continues to grow. Susie being able to handle it all is impressive. The fact that she’s able to preserve a positive attitude is next level. An example that stands out was the time a parent sent a rude message lashing out at an issue out of the school's control. Susie was able to nimbly navigate the situation, and eventually, the parent sent a message of appreciation! When Rosemary Barry, the previous principal's secretary, retired, people wondered how the school could function without her. When Susie retires (hopefully not for a while), we'll be faced with the same problem. For now, we're grateful. We're lucky to still have Susie."

Mindy String, Frost MS 

"Mindy String is the Ken Jennings of Frost. Part of the comparison comes from her years of watching Jeopardy and the year she spent near the top of the staff leaderboard in virtual trivia. The primary reason, is that Mindy has spent day after day as a Frost champion. Students who calmly do their work are easy to advocate for. A much harder task is advocating for CSS students with challenging behaviors who have tried to flip chairs, tip desks, and stream more profanity than "The Wolf of Wall Street." Mindy is somehow able to manage such outbursts, learn where they come from, and bring about genuine improvements. She remains in their corner throughout, both holding them to account and celebrating every possible victory. Her relationship with one student still amazes me. He seemed to be at "a 5" for weeks on end, lashing out at any perceived slight. Little by little, she made inroads. One afternoon, he answered more questions than any other student and offered to help put back the microscopes! The work in class, Falcon Focus, and basketball paid off. It would be natural to assume Mindy wouldn't have energy beyond students. Yet she keeps on going, participating in staff field trips, birthdays, showers, and happy hours, writing zone cards left and right. I shouldn't have been surprised, but when the exhausting student-faculty tournament ended last spring, she volunteered to clean up! In the end, I don't think the Ken Jennings comparison really works. Ken Jennings stayed a champion for 74 straight days, Mindy's gone a lot longer than that."

John Greenwood, Sprague Frost MS 

"Being a TSPEC is not easy. Every computer in the school, and seemingly every computer problem in the school comes through you. Most times, when people come to you, things aren’t working. So, they’re on edge. “Why is this broken” could easily feel like “why, TSPEC, did YOU break it?” You also may need to tell staff that the server is down, Jurassic laptops will be here a few more months, and months of lesson plans that weren't backed up won’t be coming back. So, it can be a thankless job. Yet, every Frost staff member I've known the past 14 years could not be more thankful for John Greenwood. He's taken any number of potentially stressful situations and made them manageable, even enjoyable. When you ask John for anything, you know you'll hear back. He'll email, call, text, or stop by. You'll get an answer fast. Even if it there’s no immediate solution, it feels like there is because you're heard. His warmth, candor, and humor fix any situation. He's friendly without seeming affected, clear without seeming cold, an honest-to-goodness mensch. There's no fear of being mocked or yelled at for a tech issue, as I've seen happen in other buildings. John inspires staff to do everything they can to ensure things go right. When things do go wrong, it's okay because you're in this together, you're both team players. My fondest memory of John and of his impact on the Frost community was laptop distribution week in August 2020. Covid that year mandated distribution take place in the parking lot. This wasn't a matter of handing each family a laptop and moving on to the next car. Each car had to go through an extensive checklist, in masks, at a distance, in 90-degree weather, and one day, before-and-after a torrential downpour. It could have been a disaster or at least a PR nightmare. Yet, every issue that came up, John was able to calmly solve. The final afternoon, a 7th grade parent had their window rolled down, so I asked if I could help them. "No, thank you," they replied, "The man over there took care of everything. It seemed at first like the logon server would never become available, but he was so patient and helpful, and got it done." "Yep," I chuckled, "that sounds like him." John Greenwood may not be a perfect employee. I question the wisdom of anyone who, after all these years, still supports the Washington Commanders. As far as FCPS TSPECS go, though, I can't imagine anyone better."

Emily Knupp, Frost MS 

"There are good first impressions, and there are GOOD FIRST IMPRESSIONS. Emily Knupp fits the second, all-caps group. She's barely been at Frost for 10 weeks, yet she deserves her own Top 10 List. Ways Emily Knupp Has Shown She Cares. Her first day at Frost, Emily faced a maze of renovation, a giant dirt mound and blocked-off classrooms stood between her and and her office. Her primary concern, however, didn’t seem to be finding her own office, but helping me find my equipment! Lift Off brought laptop chaos, something that could have left students stressed. She convinced them it'd all be fine, that any issues could be fixed once school started. Throughout the first quarter, she’s taken the time to craft emails that are easy to understand. She’s used color, italics, bold, caps, and underline in a way that added clarity, not confusion. On one standout day, she talked me off a ledge with Schoology, fixed all Poetry Club tech problems, and offered to post future club poems. On other days, she bolted to Engineering as soon as an issue arose, answered IAs' software questions half an hour longer than expected, and shared the numbered step-by-step screengrab system, now a game changer for teaching procedures. She was able to accomplish this while dealing with John Greenwood, a high-maintenance primadonna who makes everything about him at all times. Anyone who's interacted with TSPEC John Greenwood understands this description couldn't be further from the truth. John, like Emily, could not be more caring or humble. May they remain the Frost Tech Dream for years to come!!"

Myriam Antayhua, Frost MS 

"Myriam is an Outstanding Operational Employee because she makes it all work. She takes the ever-changing, ever-escalating tasks IAs are given and runs with them. So far there's been English, Spanish, Math, Science, Civics, Chorus, Strategies, and Computer Solutions. She'll probably dive into five new courses by the time this entry is submitted. It is not simply a matter of being assigned various subjects; she excels with them. This flexibility and proficiency might come as a bit of a shock to some of her childhood teachers. As Myriam would be the first to mention, as a kid, she was far from an ideal student. As an IA, though, she has used that to her advantage. She has been able to connect with and motivate some of Frost's toughest students. Plus, good luck to students who try to disrupt other students' learning,  not with Myriam there. To me, the most remarkable aspect of that toughness is how nimbly she can adjust it. Shrapnel flies in from all directions most days, so an IA needs to know when to push forward and when to pull back. If a horde of flies invade a shared fridge, it'd be natural to lash out. Myriam, however, used grace, humor, and industrial-strength cleaner to take care of it. The former retail manager knows how to manage. Same goes for student bathroom support, rarely the most popular task. Time and time again, however, Myriam has been the first to answer the call. A Myriam entry would not be complete without mentioning her contribution to the afterschool program. Two additional hours after a long school day is always tiring. Ten additional hours! Every day the program meets is a whole other level. My main fear during my time at Frost has been that the current Frost afterschool program specialist will retire. She insists she will never retire, but everyone does, eventually. I've recently made peace with the inevitability because of Myriam. She has the same warmth, drive, and positivity. She too never makes a mountain out of a molehill; she does all she can to help. As long as Myriam's still there, Frost will be just fine."

Mason Price, Frost MS 

"Mason Price is the Steve Smith of Frost. Smith spent 12 years as the wide receiver for Mason's beloved Carolina Panthers, racking up feat after feat .. . without drawing undue attention to himself. He has been ranked as the best Panther performer of all time, yet his "humility and kindheartedness" are what he's asked to be known for. Mason deserves the same recognition. FiveThirtyEight wrote about "the quiet dominance of Steve Smith;" here's an indication of the quiet dominance of Mason Price. CSS Science, Math, English, History, Civics, Coding, Percussion, PE, PD. Mason's done it all. He's had students that have tried to flee the building, fling chairs at doors, and everything in between. In any of those situations, he's stayed calm, cool, and reassuring. In class after CSS class, he's been the salve to save students' day, to bring them from a 5 to 1, to get them back where they need to be. I appreciate Mason's backing in class, out of class, and after school. He consistently follows up on messages and comes for bathroom support. As reliably as he'll eat a Twix each day, he'll show up to help. It's also an early Christmas whenever Mason and I are subbing in the same class never drama, just fun. More than a decade ago, Steve Smith had his first child. "I want my kid to be humble to serve," Smith said, "to think outside of himself and to smile and laugh." In a few weeks, fingers crossed, Mason will have his first child. Considering all he's done at Frost, I have no doubt Mason will take the same approach and be just as successful."

Barb Price, Frost MS 

"Barb Price is as an Outstanding Operational Employee because Barb Price is a chameleon. Time and time again, she has been asked to change positions and support Frost in new ways. Each time, she has risen to the challenge. She’s been an PHTA, IA, classroom monitor, club moderator, and everything in between. IAs tend to specialize in particular areas: CSS, DHOH, PE, LD, Cat-B. When they’re moved often out of those areas, they get frustrated. Barb, though, seem to roll with any role she’s given, whatever she can do to help. Barb has worn many hats at Frost, but she’s no dilettante. It’s not about quantity, the quality of her work has stood out. During Cat-B English lessons and Adaptive PE lessons, she’s been asked to lead the class through articles and exercises. She could have simply dictated what’s on the page, as others have. Instead, she read with gusto and varied her voice for the meaning of each line. She’s made me and the kids excited to find out what happens next. Barb’s positivity is apparent to all who interact with her. Less obvious but just as important is her specificity. IAs tend to get into debates about what we’re expected to do. 14-person 44-message group texts seem to crop up whenever there are trainings, meetings, or teacher workdays. Invariably, the IA with the most accurate answer is Barb. She paid attention to the small details in the attachment, and we all benefited. A final reason Barb is an asset to Frost is her sense of humor. She’s genuinely upbeat and always respectful, but there’s a dark streak that helps as well. It’s the reason half the time I heard Barb’s student with cerebral palsy go by, she was rolling down the hall, a burst of laughter around her. Similarly, when preparing for this writeup, I asked Barb what clubs she’d lead, as I knew there’d been a lot. She listed Chess Club, Chat Club, Anime Club, Library, Math Intervention, and Model UN. She then added, “Why? Are you writing my obit?” I better not be! For the sake of the Frost staff, parents, and students, I hope Barb remains at Frost for years to come."

Phil Hudson, Frost MS 

"A traditional image of an administrator comes with some distance, a manager holed away in an office, emerging on occasion when rules need to be explained or enforced. This does not fit Phil Hudson. He makes sure students and staff know what they should and should not, but he is never passive, negative, or remote. Phil Hudson is a man of action. He seems to always be in the halls, in the cafeteria, or along the sidewalk. He’s continually building relationships, chatting, reminding, commending, whatever fits the moment. When he's in one spot, assigned clerical tasks, he still keeps it moving. Technically, tasks don't get much drier and slower than reviewing slides for the SR+R. When memorable examples like a student shoe racket get peppered in, though, the presentation flies by and students retain the points. Few students would want to get a jump start on lunch procedures, but when a talk includes references to family members, Washington sports, and the "bald old guy" giving it, everyone pays attention. Attention must also be paid to his influence on student behavior in the cafeteria.  You’d be hard pressed to find a less desirable task than lunch duty. For years, top-notch teachers and administrators have had to talk over students. That's understandable. If you were to design a petri dish of humanity's worst tendencies, it'd be 300-plus middle schoolers as they're about to eat. Somehow, though, when Phil's on the mic, they tend to listen. Lastly, Phil deserves credit for fast feedback. Renovation issues this year could put any general building issues on the back burner. Yet, I sent him a message about an IA trailer bee issue at 2:21, heard back at 2:25, and the issue was fixed the next morning. Similarly, last year, I had a PE student who had struggled mightily with participation. Little by little, I built trust and put an exercise system in place. One triumphant period, it all came together, and the student completed 12 exercises in 1 block. Minutes later, Phil came over to thank me. I'm not sure how he even knew! He went out of his way to mention it, though, and it made a difference."

Ellen Reed, Frost MS 

"First impressions can often be misleading. Second, third, and fourth impressions? Less so. When Ellen Reed came on as Assistant Principal this August, her opening message was promising, i.e. an invite to meet immediately with all special-ed staff members. The first step for most new hires would be to ease in gradually, to spend a few weeks finding their bearings. She left us with the feeling that "we" were her bearings. As she wrote in the invite, "One of my leadership values is getting to know you all as human beings, and acknowledging who you all are outside of the work we will do together this year. I believe who you are informs of your 'why' and what drives you to serve our students each day." So, an auspicious start, but not conclusive. From there, the pattern continued. In the halls, lunches, trailers, LD classes, CSS classes, Cat-B classes, there she was, an encouraging presence who seemed genuinely interested in people's days. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, as a tricky staff issue and two tricky student issues came up on week one. I'm sure she, like anyone in education, will soon open her inbox and learn that she is responsible for everything wrong in the world. To me, the challenges were handled with honesty and empathy, further good signs. Early as she may be in her tenure, she has made a mark. Surviving the middle school cauldron each day is one thing. Sending individual positive updates to 40-plus staff members at the end of the month is something else. She is an Outstanding Leader."

Anthony Harris, Frost MS 

"Middle school students tend to forget things: sweatshirts, gloves, jackets, last night's homework. Same goes for middle school staff: In-House pleas to find missing phones and keys seem to go out each week. One thing no member of Frost Middle School has ever forgotten though is "Work hard, be nice, and widen your circle. We are one Frost."  Anthony Harris' saying is a useful mantra for life and a good way to look at what he's done as principal. Every principal works hard, well, every one not on Abbott Elementary. It's an intense round-the-clock position. What sets Anthony apart is where he focuses the most effort: on student and staff's social-emotional growth. He makes sure Frost keeps up with standards, curriculum, and assessments, but as he says, primarily, "We are in the people business." His 18-paragraph response to the cancellation of in-person school in March 2020 was the most remarkable school message I've ever read. His verbal BBCU reflection after George Floyd was killed was just as powerful. Both wove in and out effortlessly, touching on themes I've heard colleagues mention for days. Although sharing wisdom is a warm gift, his most frequent kindness has been his silliness. Middle school days can be long and hard for everyone involved. Starting his very first lecture-hall faculty meeting with a light game and gift card let staff know he understood. Starting the first student-faculty basketball since virtual with good-natured taunts let students know he cared. Seeing him ham it up with dance parties during staff trivia, faculty meetings, and student lunches boosted morale as well. Anthony's circle keeps getting wider with each passing year. His visits to the Frost Spelling Bee, Frost Musical, Poetry Club, and Sports Club showed students he'll support them no matter what their interest. His endorsement of the No Hate for Hate program and the So You Want To Talk About Race book club showed his commitment to inclusion. As he's expanded his own circle recently (APA, President of the Middle School Principals), he's reiterated his pledge to remain in ours, to visit all possible classrooms. I'm not sure when Anthony first came up with the mantra, but I'm glad he did. There are always disagreements, but overall, the unity is there, we are one Frost."

Daniel Painter, Frost MS

"Daniel Painter is a second-year teacher. This is hard to believe. His command of the subject matter and students do not fit someone at the start of their career. No matter what 7th or 8th grade PE class he steps into as an itinerant, he seems to know the content or at least can adapt immediately, a useful skill as an Adaptive PE teacher. He also brings a wealth of knowledge beyond the class he's in. For a gen ed student with significant physical issues, for example, he suggested various band-based and low-weight exercises that he could do in the weight room. Any itinerant can expect a wide variety of challenges, but two students he supports are particularly challenging. One can boil over at any time; the other is determined to act cool at all times. Somehow, Daniel can weave in and out of conversations with them and excel with both. When we reach the basketball unit, I'm sure he'll continue to do what NY Knicks announcer Walt Clyde Frazier has described as, "sliding and gliding, swishing and dishing, bounding and astounding." To quote Clyde, when it comes to meeting the needs of his students, Daniel "will not be denied." A final reason he deserves to be recognized is his interaction with school staff. He's been able to nimbly navigate tricky situations with gen ed teachers, special ed teachers, parents, and IAs.  IAs can occasionally be left out the loop, Daniel consciously includes them, asking for their input each visit. Daniel may only be at Frost once or twice a week, but each time he's here, he makes an impact."

Keely Withington, Frost MS 

"Technically, Keely Withington is a first-year teacher. This is far from her first rodeo though, she’s been excelling at Frost for years. This started in 2011, when I knew her as a student in some of the same small-group classes she teaches today. She was a respectful, responsible, driven 8th grader, a calm role model in a class of characters. In 2021, as an IA, she added to those traits -- developing presence and authority during classes and after school. Any time the teacher was absent, she could step in and handle literacy, science, English, Strategies, and a roulette wheel of last-minute coverage. She also showed herself to be a team player, rolling with bathroom support for students with wheelchairs at a moment's notice. After school, she led ASL lessons, organized IA Secret Santas, volunteered to make multiple tournament sub plans, and inspired the most enthusiastic volleyball team I've seen. It's clear where the team got their enthusiasm from. When she found out that her Volleyball Club kids were the winning playoff team in the student-faculty championship, she let out a roar that could be heard clear across the county. A similar sound echoed in the Frost lecture hall this August. There were numerous announcements at the faculty meeting the first day back, births, weddings, new staff members in new positions. No announcement prompted the thunderous applause that Keely got though. People were that happy she made it. Her hard work has continued to pay off these first few weeks in Civics. It's natural to have certain classes go a bit off the rails the first year, it's almost a rite of passage. In one period I was in that included multiple possible troublemakers, I could hear a pin drop. In another, she was able to get an even-more challenging student to meet her expectations, to make a second effort. Who knows where the rest of Keely's teaching journey will take her? For the sake of the students, staff, and community, though, fingers crossed Frost will stay a part of it."

Trey Reed, Frost MS 

"Presenting information to a group of 20 students and having all 20 process it and follow up on it is not easy. Trey Reed does better, far better. On days when weather and scheduling make it a necessity, Trey does that for 120 students simultaneously, three full PE classes! His command of the material and the clarity of his directions make it happen. An element of empathy helps as well. Trey connects with exactly what kids want: to be able to move, interact, and have fun. Well-meaning long-winded lectures won't get them that. "Give me 2 minutes; I promise you'll be able to talk." Sometimes it's 3, 5, or 10 minutes, but it's always efficient and effective. The clever sleight of hand in Trey's approach is that kids end up learning more. Given the prospect of more work, most 8th graders would squawk. Ironically, though, they end up covering more material because he's able to frame it as a social experience. There's less teacher filler, fewer behavioral issues, and more genuine engagement. All of this helps Trey's colleagues as well. A team teacher or IA does not need to worry about the lesson, Trey can handle it. He also has the confidence to delegate, asking me to cover a tough lecture-hall health lesson. Moreover, he's participated in every year's student-faculty tournaments and rescued last year's redemption round. After a bunch of ref absences, Trey stepped in at the last minute and saved it. Last, Trey deserves credit for being so easy to work with. He's gone out of his way to share the health trailer, the afterschool closet, and even at one point, the Auld Shebeen bill. Collaboration can be rife with potential conflicts. With Trey, it never is. His warmth, humor, honesty, and flexibility make it a breeze."

Theresa Hunt, Frost MS 

"In Greek mythology, the Titan Atlas carried the world on his shoulders, a formidable task few could handle. For 19 years, Frost has had its own Atlas:Theresa Hunt. Each day, being a Frost PE teacher means carrying on your shoulders the physical, mental, social, and emotional health of more than 200 students for some periods, that means 120 students at once! With those numbers, most would try to survive. Theresa thrives. Her command is clear in any class she's in. A group of rowdy 7th graders might think they're going to start something. The arctic cool and Axe body spray they're hopped up on might mislead them. If Theresa's in the class though, their foolishness will not continue. They will sit; they will show respect; they will learn. This leads to an important distinction: compassion. Theresa may run a tight ship, but she never rules with an iron fist. She goes out of her way to help students who are struggling and challenge those who are already doing well. She recognizes students’ birthdays, holidays, performances, and identities. When students submit FlipGrid videos sharing who they are, she writes a paragraph back to each one. That’s 200+ paragraphs! With four young kids of her own, who she's equally devoted to, how is it that possible? She’s either Wonder Woman or Hermoine from Harry Potter. Hermoine’s time turner that allows more than 24 hours must explain how she does it. Being serious though, it’s a credit to her efficiency and empathy. Theresa can empathize with students because she follows The Golden Rule. Whatever she asks them to do, she does herself. This has meant seven straight dances, four straight HITT workouts, and one epic volleyball final. Students are more likely to put themselves out there because their teacher is. Year after year, there are students who act out across classes, yet not in PE. Theresa has made a difference. A final reason Theresa stands out is her commitment to inclusion. She's the first to thank people online, at staff meetings, in person, and in class. One might think, for someone as driven and focused as Theresa, that sharing in class would be an issue, that she would need total control. In reality, Theresa has continually advocated *for* team teaching looking for input from teachers, interpreters, transliterators, PHAs, and IAs. As a result, everyone wins. She has were fewer management issues because others help manage. By delegating authority, she strengthens her own. In the end, the world stays safe on her shoulders because she encourages others to prop it up, to help share the weight."

Steve Treger, Frost MS 

"The student count of a PE teacher is intense. 200+ students is generally more than enough, who would volunteer for more? For years, though, that's what Steve Treger has done. He's used Wakefield Forest neighborhood connections and Woodson coaching connections to earn the respect of kids and colleagues across the Woodson Pyramid. Steve's candid approach would work if it was limited to just Frost. Any time someone knows their stuff, means what they say, and wants the best for you, it's powerful. His commitment to the community takes it to the next level. A previous student, for example, was notorious for misbehavior, regularly leaving staff members (including me) in his wake. Steve was able to build on the neighborhood relationship and improve his performance. Same goes for those who've been a part of his pool and one basketball player who nearly missed a school-wide tournament. Thanks to Steve's relationship with the dad, the student made a second effort and excelled, a behavioral role model for all his teammates. Steve's years of coaching JV and Varsity basketball have proven just as fruitful. Players he coached became state champions in 2017, the first in 55 years. Steve has used this Woodson coaching cred to help Frost students. Potential future athletes get the message loud and clear. Now's not the time to slack off; it's time to impress (the friend of) a future coach. In recent years, Steve's leadership has benefited Frost generally. Instead of being forced inside or onto severely-limited fields, Woodson has allowed Frost to some of its own. Steve built trust; class became better for all 8th graders. Lastly, Steve deserves credit for treating IAs with respect. Any message I've sent, he's responded to. He's asked for me for classes and included any time I'm in them. His obsession with the Yankees and Justin Bieber leaves a lot to be desired (Let's...Go...Mets), but he's still great to work with. It's clear he cares."

Sharon Peterson, Frost MS 

"Sharon Peterson deserves FCPS Cares recognition because it seems like she cares for every person in FCPS. Frost students can tell she cares because she's with them in the trenches, whether that be the halls, the gym, or even (gulp) the cafeteria. She's not there to simply deliver information, she's determined to make them more fit, active, ethical people. Sometimes, this has meant staying for more than an hour of volleyball even though she wasn't working that day. Other times, it's meant powering through a full deck of cards: 52 exercises 4 times a day. She also joined 8th graders at the school dance in a full-circle moment and convinced 8th graders in PE opposed to ever dancing to learn new moves. Frost staff can tell she cares because she's right alongside them at Unified Special Olympics, Chat Club, ESY, SGA, Jump Start, Lift Off, a trip to NYC, a trip to WV, and many staff birthdays. On a personal level, I've loved how she's mentioned my value at IEP meetings and given me an active role/voice in each lesson. I also found it mind blowing that within a few weeks of working together, she asked if my family wanted to get together with her family for a concert. At the height of Covid, that virtual Foo Fighters show was a blast a reminder what we could one day look forward to live. To summarize Sharon, another musician comes to mind: James Taylor. Come Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall, all anyone at Frost has to do is call. She'll be there. With Sharon around, everyone has a friend."

Rich Agosta, Frost MS 

"Over the past 14 years, Rich Agosta has done it all. He’s been a part of FSAC, Frost Mentors, VIP Camp, Weight Training, Mandt Training, Student-Faculty Basketball/Volleyball/Kickball, Chat Club, Homework Club, and whatever five new things have come up before this is published. He’s somehow been able to do this while running a half-marathon, biking 45 miles to and from work, teaching a Jefferson contact, finishing a Master’s, and raising three young children. Members of the military are known for their dedication, but that’s beyond. In each of these experiences, Rich has shown himself to be disciplined, dynamic, humble, and professional. Students and staff appreciate him because they can count on him, for leadership, for a laugh, for whatever is called for. To me, the experience that stands above all others, where he's made the biggest positive impact, is Adaptive PE. Behavior in Adaptive PE can be a *lot.* During certain blocks, Rich may wonder whether there's the potential for more shrapnel than there was when he served in Iraq. Put certain students near each other, and there's bound to be an IED. Remarkably, though, no matter how volatile the situation, Rich is able to defuse it. Not only defuse it, but flip it, take a student who was having an awful day and turn it into an awesome one. His flexibility and positivity make it happen. The times he's asked me to cover Adaptive, I've tried to embrace his model: being warm, calm, and clear. The final Adaptive example below is comic and serious. During one Friday class, by following directions, being an effective line leader, and showing respect, students could earn stars. As Rich was reviewing the count on the whiteboard, a student exclaimed, "I just earned my third star. I can now participate in Fun Friday. This is the greatest day of my life." On the one hand, it's funny that that would register as an epic moment. On the other hand, it's moving, what had been built up mattered. Rich made a difference."

Andrew Sheldon, Frost MS 

"Transitioning to a new school can be tough. The tendency is to try to make it through, to keep your head down and hope for the best. Andrew Sheldon has gone above and beyond. Students, teachers, and IAs have benefited from activities he brought that have never previously been at Frost. Flag Tag, Disco Pickleball, and Giant Ball Volleyball generated genuine excitement. Kids were physically, socially, and emotionally engaged in a way they may not have been without his contribution. He's also taken things that have existed at Frost and made them better. Knockout Basketball has been a PE staple and, technically, can occur with little-to-no guidance. Student enthusiasm and growth is much higher, though, when their teacher clearly cares and when he's actively involved throughout. This was especially valuable for a previous student who faced numerous social-emotional challenges. The student lasting longer than his teacher and being loudly supported by the same teacher made a difference. Student-faculty basketball and volleyball have been around for years as well. 2022 stood out though: having someone who volunteered to ref, hold practices, and send Iverson-meme-laden updates was special. Lastly, on a personal level, I appreciate his expressions of gratitude, requests for coverage, and perspective after a particularly difficult session. Transitions may be tough, but they're no longer relevant for Andrew. He's all Frost now and he's made an impact."

Jeri Thomas, Frost MS 

"Jeri Thomas is full of math jokes. They're on her walls, shirts, slides, warmups, Schoology site, and in conversations with students. They make math (and middle school) enjoyable for some, really enjoyable for others, and bearable for all. Historically, students have misgivings about math, but I've never heard consistent ones about Jeri's class. IA's can be forgotten at times, left in the corner, not consulted or referenced for days on end. From the moment I entered Jeri's Algebra Honors class, she treated me as an equal. Technically, this was not true. She led all the planning, grading, and teaching, as she should. In every meaningful way, though, she included me. I was introduced on the first day, asked to talk a little about myself, provided handouts, given keys, and invited to answer students' questions. When there were messages relevant to lessons and students, she forwarded them. When she was absent, she sent me all the plans and mentioned me in them. When I provided a STEM calendar after winter break, she shared a fact from it with students each day. Actually, it was even better. We took turns sharing facts, like one person! This didn't just make me feel good. The dovetailing benefitted her, me, and numerous challenging students. Her approach reminded me of a final math joke: "The subtraction sign said to the addition sign, 'Are you sure I make a difference?' I'm positive." Just as true for Jeri."

"Heather, Caroline and Kent have been a major support to the Clothing Pantry at Kilmer Middle School. Heather put out an email to the Athletic Trainers in Fairfax County saying that Kilmer is starting a Clothing Pantry to go along with their Food Pantry and needed gently used items. Heather, Caroline and Kent donated many boxes of clothes, along with school supplies. Heather makes a monthly donation of brand new clothes for the pantry and keeps spreading the word of our current needs to her coworkers. The Kilmer pantry is very thankful for their constant support."

Teachers have so little time to spare, and Ms. Coyne spent hers lifting up her student. "Mr. Firestine is one of the kindest and most fun teachers I have ever had. He is always cracking jokes and he makes learning fun. After a lesson, he lets us have a break. "I wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts and praise about Ms. McRoberts. This is her third year being part of my son's team and we are fortunate to have her. Since starting the CCS program at Saratoga, my son's confidence, emotional flexibility, teamwork, and general disposition about school have dramatically improved and we account Ms. McRoberts as a primary factor for this change. My son knows he has the consistent and measured support of Ms. McRoberts which has helped him thrive like he has not before. What we feel makes her so special is the individual connections she makes with her students. Most recently, my son had his 10th birthday party and number one on his invite list was Ms. McRoberts. I invited her but cautioned my son that teachers can not always attend things outside of the school day. Much to our delight (and my son's classmates/friends) she made an appearance. It was so fun to see the kids light up the moment they saw her. It was like a famous You Tuber walked in (lol). She spent time with each of her former and current students and took many party pics all of which contributed to the success of the event but more importantly these kids know they have a teacher that believes in them and fosters a genuine community. It is because of educators like Ms. McRoberts that FCPS and Saratoga ES specifically is such a great place for families. We will long be grateful for the dedication and positive influence Ms. McRoberts has had in our son's life."

"Thanh Nga is deserving of being recognized for her endless contributions to the Lewis HS community. As an outstanding member of the custodial team, Thanh Nga amazes our school community daily. This past summer, while short-staffed for a period, she took on additional leadership roles and was a pleasure to work with. Her hours were long and her responsibilities continually grew. Whether it was preparing multiple rooms for Lancers Charge Ahead (100+ students), hosting the Region 3 kickoff, supporting Lancer Launch, or preparing an entire high school's classrooms, Thanh Nga and her team rose to the occasion. She is positive, supportive, hard-working, and a fantastic colleague. There were many occasions where different classroom or school needs overlapped, yet Thanh Nga handled each with grace and patience. Regardless of whatever workload she already has, she will always stop what she is doing to help out another. Her optimism and positive spirit set her apart.  Thanh Nga is a treasure at Lewis HS and we are so fortunate to have her."
