Dawn Cochran, Stonecroft Transportation Center

"We had a class of preschool students returning for in-person instruction on 12/10. I realized about an hour prior to the students arriving that I had not notified transportation the day before about the students returning. I called our transportation office and Dawn answered the phone. I explained the situation and Dawn handled it with the utmost professionalism and care for our students. Within 10 minutes she had arranged for drivers to pick up our students and get them to school. Dawn is an excellent example of a caring culture and I want to publicly recognize her dedication to FCPS and our students!"

Christina Kern, Crossfield ES

"Mrs. Kern was one of the first teachers to volunteer as a pilot program to bring low-incidence/self-contained special needs classrooms and students back to in-person learning. She goes above and beyond to engage the students. She made hard-copy binders of every subject covered in a virtual environment so the kids had worksheets and handouts to touch, feel, and write on and even went as far as hand-delivering them to student homes. She practiced mask-wearing in the virtual environment every day to normalize and desensitize sensory sensitive kids to wearing them so they’d be ready for in-person. She developed and delivered all of her virtual instruction without an IA, teaching to 8+ kids and ensuring full and equal participation. When new students, triplets, arrived at our school and they were unable to sign on at the scheduled times due to working parents, she had a person 1:3 session for just them at 4:30 pm after a very full workday. She fiercely advocates for our students, and she cares about their needs and well-being (moreso than we have ever experienced in our 15 years as special needs parents of two kids). Once the County resumed in-person for Group 3 students, she had her classroom fully readied for the new learning environment. She simultaneously delivers in-person and virtual instruction for 3+ hours per day, all while working on two laptops, a smartboard, and a desktop overhead camera. She ensures no non-verbal or soft-spoken child is spoken over or overlooked, as every student takes turns reading or answering questions sequentially. She accommodates multi-modal forms of communication, from AAC devices, iPads, keyboards, letterboards, etc. to give equal opportunity to speaking and non-speaking students. She is a dedicated and seemingly tireless example of what an exceptional special needs teacher looks like, and our students are so very lucky to have her as their ally."

Dave Wall, Justice HS

"Safety and Security Assistant Dave Wall has demonstrated his dedication, resourcefulness, and attention to detail during this challenging period of SY 20-21. He was instrumental in helping to develop a system of effective and efficient hallway traffic flow for students and staff to maintain adequate social distancing. He took on the task of the appropriate placement of signage to identify the direction of travel to be used by students and staff when moving throughout the building. He was an integral part of the team developing the flow in and out of the cafeteria as well as seating during lunches meeting health department requirements for room capacity and social distancing. Dave Wall has consistently been a valued member of the Justice High School Safety and Security Team."

"Our HMES music teacher Mr. Brian Welfle went above and beyond to strengthen our school community and bring holiday cheer to our students on Tuesday night. Mr. Welfle dressed as Welf on the Shelf and hosted our virtual bingo and holiday singalong. We had over 70 households join the fun online. He was critical in promoting the online event, drawing in many of our families who don't typically attend virtual events. He mastered the technology and kept the event moving seamlessly with excitement, laughter, singing, and live music (he even composed original lyrics for our 12 Months of 2020 song!) Mr. Welfle epitomizes teacher dedication and makes learning and community building a fun and uplifting experience. Mr. Welfle rocks!"

"My children have both been a bit discouraged lately, having to attend school virtually and stay in the house most of the time. They absolutely perked up during the recent HMES Welf on the Shelf Bingo/Sing-along night expertly hosted by Mr. Welfle and Ms. Jopke, and even Mom and Dad joined in on the holiday fun. I haven't heard them laugh like that in ages, and they were able to interact with their beloved HMES classmates. THANK YOU to these dedicated HMES teachers who took time out of their very busy schedules to share some holiday joy with their community. It's been a highlight of our holiday season, no question!"

"Ms. Jopke sets the standard for teachers!  In addition to serving as the teacher liaison on the PTA Board, Ms. Jopke actively participates in events that strengthen student and family engagement and community building.  On Tuesday night, Ms. Jopke mc'ed HMES' first virtual bingo and holiday singalong. She established the sequence of events and moderated the technical forum. She had over 70 households join the event and seamlessly managed student participation. She was clear, empathetic, organized, and lively. She kept the event on schedule and the fun flowing! We are so lucky to count Ms. Jopke among our Hollin Meadows teachers."

Mike Craven, Burke School

"Mike Craven is an exceptional person. He represents the heart and soul of our building. Mike worked tirelessly to manage and collect over 500 items for our annual Angel Tree whereby we were able to make the Christmas wishes of about 20 of our neediest families come true. He personally filled up a minivan of presents and needed household supplies for a family who has experienced devastating hardship and the parents had told the children that "because of the pandemic, Santa has to stay home this year". Mike Craven is a selfless and most giving human being and is most deserving of an FCPS Cares award."

"Mike Craven is the heart of Burke School. He has such a passion for our students and their families. As a new part of the Burke school family, I was overwhelmed with joy to see the effort Mr. Craven put in to ensure our families had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration. Mr. Craven and his team organized the collection and distribution of all the necessary items for a delicious holiday meal, even including gift cards to purchase any additional items for more than 20 families. Meals went to not only students and their families, but to the dedicated and hard-working bus drivers. Then again, in December, Mr. Craven and his team began the daunting task of playing Santa for families in need. He organized and collected over 400 items to help our students and their families have a wonderful holiday. As I marveled at this selfless task, I was told that he has been doing this for years. My heart was filled with joy as I pictured the faces of our students and their families when they received all the wonderful gifts. This holiday, even in the midst of a pandemic when so many of our families are suffering, every Burke student will find something special under their tree thanks to Mr. Craven."

Kaitlin Donohue – Eagle View Elementary 

Kaitlin is a sixth-grade teacher that has worked tirelessly to support the social-emotional wellbeing of our students during this unprecedented time. She has created interactive, highly engaging lessons, she frequently has one on one check-in with students to ensure they are doing okay, and she frequently works with students in small groups to provide that extra support, time, and attention. Kaitlyn is frequently checking in on colleagues and shares notes of gratitude, motivational quotes, and little pick me up messages, that truly brightens your day. She regularly goes above and beyond for her team, students, and families. Her authenticity, genuine care, and consideration shine through, even in this virtual setting.

Melanie Dash, Hayfield SS

"Melanie Dash is one of the kindest teachers I’ve ever known. I was having trouble explaining an economic concept from a math perspective to my students and I reached out to Melanie for help. I emailed her late on a Sunday night and within an hour she sent me a perfect explanation and a pdf that explained how to do the math, as well as the math language that kids would know that would help it all make sense. The next day, thanks to her help, I was a better teacher and was able to help my kids understand. The other day I was asking for her help with a VPN issue I was having, and I casually mentioned that my car broke down that morning. She immediately asked if I needed to be picked up so I could take the laptop to school. These are just two of many examples of how Melanie always goes out of her way to help others. Her students love her and she’s a phenomenal colleague."

Over the summer after a tough sudden switch to virtual school and the end of the year, Ms. Melton, Ms. Cox, and Ms. DJ went well above and beyond for our daughter’s whole class and continued to hold virtual sessions into the summer. Our daughter SO looked forward to the sessions each week and they made a huge difference to her morale and her routine. "Andrea Edmonson is a substitute teacher who has been filling in for 4th-grade teacher Sierra Johnson since school began in September. She has gone above and beyond to engage every single student during virtual learning. She hosts a Lunch Bunch twice a week during her lunchtime. My son has never been so excited about an optional social time, as he is about Lunch Bunch on Fridays. I believe this is a direct result of the classroom climate and culture that Ms. Edmonson has created. She reaches out and engages with every student. She challenges students yet respects their boundaries. She acknowledges and celebrates differences daily, which has created an inclusive community where students are comfortable and excited to be a part of. She has communicated everything I could possibly need to know and more in a timely, efficient manner. Any question I ever have about anything can always be answered by reading the rest of her Monday e-mails. She has made my son's 4th-grade year amazing. His Grandmother and baby brother have especially enjoyed morning meetings and story time! We have thoroughly enjoyed having Ms. Edmonson as a substitute teacher, she has made a daily difference in our lives!"

"Ms. Hampton-Loomis goes above and beyond on a daily basis. She responds to emails, phone calls, and concerns any hour of the day or night and always does so with a smile on her face (or on a virtual Google screen). Her professionalism and expert knowledge of the regulations and laws governing special education keep our department running smoothly, and our relationships with other schools and departments strong. Most importantly, Ms. Hampton-Loomis is a teacher. She ensures that our staff is educated and informed when it comes to working with our students and our community. They are all hard workers, and when the building preparation was complete, they were eager to find more to do. One afternoon, I casually asked if they were allowed to touch up paint. In the weeks that followed, they touched up or repainted almost our whole building! It has lifted all of our spirits to see how great their work looks, and I think it will really feel like the first day in a new school when we are all able to be back together. Well done, Team! "I would like to nominate Ms. Gaddis, AKA Ms. Penny for the FCPS Cares Award. Ms. Penny is an Edmentum support staff member, a teacher for the in-school suspension classroom, and a friendly face for the students and she is a mentor. From the moment she became a part of the Lewis High School family in 2015, she has displayed a level of dedication and commitment to students that you don’t see in all. Because of her caring nature, she has mentored many students under the auspices of MentorWorks and has also informally mentored students who have been sent to her classroom as an alternative place to complete their work. When I call her about a student who is struggling, she always says, "yes Ms. Fulmore, bring them down". She greets each student with a smile, a listening ear, and meets them where they are. Needless to say, those students find their way back to Ms. Penny for continued support. Ms. Penny takes students “under her wing” and teaches them how to fly. She requires hard work, good attendance, and positive behavior from her mentees and all students.  She truly knows how to connect with the students and makes her classroom a welcoming place to be."

"Mr. Zook volunteered to come to school to help move over 15 vehicles that needed to be moved before a roofing project could start at the school. Many of the vehicles needed some TLC before they would start and Mr. Zook worked to put air in tires, scrape ice, jump batteries, and move vehicles to another location on school grounds. As a special education support teacher, Mr. Zook has had a vital role in the success of students in several of our programs. Mr. Zook always puts students first and works collaboratively with teachers and students to ensure student success. He has done a truly amazing job with his students and I appreciate his willingness to still help the school by moving all of these vehicles."

"Mr. Brown worked tirelessly during his planning day to come to school to move vehicles in the parking lot to allow a roofing project to begin over winter break. Many of the vehicles needed some TLC before they would start and Mr. Brown worked to put air in tires, scrape ice, jump batteries, and move vehicles to another location on school grounds. I know how busy Mr. Brown has been while teaching concurrently and now 100% virtual again with a very hands-on curriculum. Daely Castillo, Falls Church HS

"Daely Castillo is an administrative assistant in the attendance office at FCHS who "officially" has mentored students for six years. Caring, patient, and fluent in Spanish, Daely has been paired with ESOL Level 1/2 students, usually for multiple years. Daely is generous, persistent, and creative in her support; she builds trust with her mentees and their families and breaks down hurdles to learning. From tutoring during lunch each week, to helping complete free/reduced meal applications, to facilitating student/parent conversations, Daely identifies and embraces all interventions. As a result, her mentees feel a strong connection, often visiting her daily and bringing friends to her for guidance. With Daely’s support, her students have seen graduation as more possible, an accomplishment that often is the first within their family. With Daely by their side, these students and their families know that they have an extra special ally, advocate, and guide accompanying them. We thank Daely for going above and beyond as a caring adult for our FCHS community!"

"Michelle is in her first year of teaching high school, and she has been working hard to make personal connections with her students virtually. She had one student in particular who was struggling to stay engaged with online instruction, and his mom shared that the virtual experience had been difficult for him. Michelle offered to meet him at Starbucks to have a face-to-face conversation with him. His mom had shared with Michelle that he was passionate about fighting racial inequality and had donated summer earnings to an organization focused on combatting injustice. When they met, Michelle brought him a t-shirt representing equality. Since the meeting, the student has been turning on his camera and microphone in class and participating regularly. Michelle truly went above and beyond in this situation and made a difference for this student."

"Ms. Jopke is the teacher liaison to our school PTA and she has really helped to make all of the virtual meetings and events a success this year. She's moderated PTA Meetings, expertly using the BBCU interface so that they run smoothly. She's also just generally an extremely positive & engaged staff member. She and her co-teacher Ms. Smith have organized a weekly Monday Move It for all the grades and this week, she also served as MC for the PTA's virtual BINGO Night & Holiday Singalong (one of our school's favorite traditions) and helped make the event a fun, community-building activity in a year when we've all missed out on those special HMES traditions."

The beginning English learners feel so connected to Key Middle School thanks to her compassion and enthusiasm during Advisory. Tracey recruited a former student of hers to speak to her Advisory kids (both 7th and 8th grade in my BBCU). She handpicked the speaker because he came to this country from El Salvador at age 12 and didn’t know English. He was a leader in HS and in her AP Spanish class. He graduated from George Mason University and owns his own business today. "Ms. Case is incredibly organized, prepared, and communicates clearly to my complete amazement every day in these unprecedented times. I don't know how she does it... she seems to know what each student needs and is able to reach them through the computer screen. On Thursday, December 12 my son was excited to present a part of a research project he and a peer worked on together. I was going to video and we were very excited together when it was his turn. As he read his part, it was painfully obvious he did not write any of the content and was struggling to read it as it was a lengthy excerpt by and for adults. All I could do was watch as I saw tears of embarrassment and frustration well in his eyes. One by one students gave feedback questioning whether or not he wrote it. I advised my son to send a private message to the friend who was working with him and Ms. Case to clear up the confusion. My son was panicked and fighting real tears now. Ms. Case asked my son and his friend to meet privately by chat. She expertly discussed the matter and had such amazing intuition about how to handle the situation, it brought tears to my eyes. She made my son feel SO much better as it was his partner who copied and pasted the excerpt and she did not reprimand- she taught the boys why that is not allowed. I love the delicate way Ms. Case handled the problem, focusing on "teaching" not reprimanding or becoming offended or incensed. This is just one of many instances where Ms. Case has done a remarkable job in this virtual school year. She has helped us all to see that we can do this and learn from it. She is a remarkable teacher who has found her calling."

As I am sure you know, this year has been extremely challenging for FCPS kindergartners. At ACCA, we have 34 kindergarteners spread over 20 different elementary schools. I observe the virtual kindergarten classrooms daily and I know I may sound bias as Mrs.DiPalma is my grandson's teacher but Mrs. DiPalma is truly one of the most engaging, caring, and most importantly- developmentally appropriate teachers of the FCPS kindergarten teachers. Mrs. DiPalma's expectations for her kindergartners are realistic to each of their individual challenges during this time. Additionally, she is great at communicating with the families and highlighting for each child their individual accomplishments they achieve in her class throughout the day. Earlier in the year, she sent postcards to her kindergartners encouraging them and letting them know how thankful she is to be their teacher. She has dropped off materials at our door when I have been unable to go to the school during scheduled pickup times due to my work schedule. I am so thankful that my grandson has Mrs. DiPalma as his kindergarten teacher! I know the halls at Forest Edge are mostly empty but if a star of recognition could be put on the wall- Mrs. DiPalma's name should be on it! We put together all the envelopes and got them ready to send. But then when we went to the post office we discovered it would cost $3.89 to mail each letter. And so Ms. Robertson found herself driving around delivering letters to doorsteps and mailboxes on her day off to make sure this magic could happen. In a time when connections are so hard to achieve but so necessary for our student's hearts, she went above and beyond to make sure those connections were made. How lucky we are."

She is always emailing him questions and asking him for more opportunities to practice the material. Mr. Ryan is extremely responsive. Most of the time he responds to her in under 24 hours. He is always willing to take the time to speak to her. And once when she asked for more material to study over Thanksgiving break he created questions for her before he took his break. That was so impressive because he could have just said "look here" or "read this thing." Instead, he put specific questions together for her before he left to take his Thanksgiving break. She was over the moon. She works hard in the class because she wants to do well but also because she doesn't want to disappoint him. But when the pandemic closed schools to in-person learning, the drivers in Area 3 Team 36 hopped out of their buses and into our school to help facilitate a myriad of projects and activities! Thanks to their flexibility, their keen project management skills, and their good-natured attitudes, Oak View has been able to support our teachers and students through activities like supply distributions, assembling and packing items for students, and logging take-home books. And just this week alone, a team helped gather and organize more than 1000 canned goods for the annual SCA food drive AND unpack and label 400 laptops for our students. While we have always admired our team of bus drivers, we continue to be awed by their willingness to serve our community on a whole new level!"

"As a 7th grader, I was really nervous to enter middle school. Thinking about tough classes made me go crazy! But then I met Ms. Bolanos.  Out of every teacher I ever had in my life she is my favorite. She is willing to sit for hours and teach something to someone who does not understand. She shaped me into who I am, teaching me about etiquette when typing or even spreading kindness to people around you. Ms. Bolanos will remember your name so quickly, and when talking about your day she will ask "How did the baseball game go" or "How was your road trip I heard it was snowing there." You see I always dreamed about having a teacher who understands me and knows me better than I know myself. I see Ms. Bolanos as a remodel. I will remember her as a teacher with respect, love and gratitude for her students. Ms. Bolanos is a teacher I will never forget."
