ENERGY STAR
Energy-efficient buildings help protect the environment while saving money via the EPA ENERGY STAR Program.
To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of ENERGY STAR, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is offering special, one-time recognition to any organization that earns EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification for five or more buildings in 2022. Eligible organizations gain “membership” to ENERGY STAR Certification Nation at four different tiers—Member, Premier Member, Executive Member, and Elite Member—depending on how many buildings they certify in 2022.
This year, FCPS earned ENERGY STAR certification for 61 buildings, making us an Executive Member of Certification Nation. To earn the ENERGY STAR, a commercial building or industrial plant must be independently verified to operate more efficiently than 75% of similar properties nationwide. ENERGY STAR certified buildings use an average of 35 percent less energy and are responsible for 35 percent less carbon dioxide emissions than typical buildings. That is important since commercial buildings and industrial plants are responsible for nearly half of the nation’s energy use and nearly half of its greenhouse gas emissions.
Since 2014, FCPS, partnering with the ENERGY STAR program has saved 3 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, over $70 million in energy costs, and achieved over 230,000 thousand metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions.
ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Winner for Sustained Excellence
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has received the 2023 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy.
About ENERGY STAR
ENERGY STAR is a voluntary program offered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that helps businesses and individuals save money while protecting the climate through superior energy efficiency.
The ENERGY STAR program was established by the EPA in 1992, under the authority of the Clean Air Act. Under the EPA’s leadership, American consumers, businesses, and organizations have made investments in energy efficiency that are transforming the market for efficient products and practices, creating jobs, and stimulating the economy. Now in its 30th year, the ENERGY STAR program has boosted the adoption of energy-efficient products, practices, and services through valuable partnerships, objective measurement tools, and consumer education.
What Does it Mean to be ENERGY STAR Certified?
To earn the EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification, a facility has to be certified by a third-party engineer and rank among the top 25 percent in building energy use in its peer group, nationwide. In 2022, FCPS earned ENERGY STAR building certification for 61 schools. 187 FCPS buildings have been certified at least once. A total of 759 building certifications have been earned. The final results for FCPS ENERGY STAR Building Certification in 2022 along with their ENERGY STAR score and years certified are as follows:
