Congratulations to Kathleen Fugle, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) and computer science resource teacher at Sleepy Hollow Elementary School! She was announced as the Virginia Department of Education’s (VDOE) 2024 Computer Science Educator of the Year!

Kathleen was selected amongst five other educators from across Virginia who had been recognized for their commitment and excellence in K-12 computer science education. Her passion for computer science and her proactive involvement in promoting it within the Sleepy Hollow community help to bring the subject to life, inspiring her students to explore the exciting world of technology and coding.

Kathleen is an exceptional teacher who is passionate about STEAM education and creating a positive learning environment. Her efforts are appreciated by both her young learners and the wider school community, and her teaching style makes difficult concepts easier to understand and more enjoyable.

Assistant Principal Tim Scesney shares, “Mrs. Fugle definitely finds the connections between our kids, our curriculum, as well as computer science. And when you find that match, she does great things with all.”

After receiving the award, Kathleen shared that she was “grateful for this recognition from the VDOE and also the support from CodeVA over the years. It’s been really, very meaningful.” She goes on, “I feel super proud to represent Fairfax County Public Schools, their STEAM and Computer Science program, and my beloved Sleepy Hollow Elementary School.”
