Fifteen FCPS Students Win 2017 National Merit Corporate-Sponsored Scholarships

Fifteen Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students have been awarded 2017 corporate-sponsored scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.  The students are part of a group of more than 1,000 National Merit finalists chosen to receive scholarships financed by companies, foundations, and other business organizations.

Winners of the corporate-sponsored scholarships, with their probable career fields in parentheses, are:

  • Jeffrey Wang of Chantilly High School (computer science), National Merit Rockwell Collins Scholarship.
  • Joya Bhattacharyya of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) (biology), National Merit Leidos, Inc. Scholarship.
  • Cecelia Brower of TJHSST (computer science), National Merit LPL Financial Scholarship.
  • David Chao of TJHSST (computer science), National Merit James R. Schlesinger-The Mitre Corporation Scholarship.
  • Sarah Dickson of TJHSST (engineering), National Merit FTS International, LLC Scholarship.
  • Kevin Geng of TJHSST (computer programming), National Merit Citizen Watch Scholarship.
  • Kristen Halper of TJHSST (mechanical engineering), National Merit James R. Schlesinger-The Mitre Corporation Scholarship.
  • Joyce Tian of TJHSST (medicine), National Merit General Dynamics Scholarship.
  • Jessica Wang of TJHSST (medicine), National Merit Siemens Scholarship.
  • Ran Zhang of TJHSST (computer science), National Merit Leidos, Inc., Scholarship.
  • Sarah Zhou of TJHSST (biomedical engineering), National Merit Senator Charles S. Robb Scholarship.
  • Sean Franklin of West Potomac High School (urban-city planning), National Merit Southwest Airlines Co. Scholarship.
  • Celina Paudel of Westfield High School (biomedical engineering), National Merit General Dynamics Scholarship.
  • Helena Sowder of Woodson High School (biochemistry), National Merit Northrop Grumman Scholarship.
  • Carolyn Wong of Woodson High School (bioengineering), National Merit Northrop Grumman Scholarship.         

Corporate sponsors provide merit scholarship awards for National Merit finalists who are children of their employees, who are residents of communities the companies serve, or who have college majors or career interests the sponsors want to encourage.

Corporate-sponsored merit scholarship awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and range from $500 to $10,000 per year.  Others provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000.  Recipients can use the awards at regionally accredited U.S. colleges or universities of their choice.
