Central Office

Eric Fleming, Instructional Programs Support Center

"On October 25, Eric Fleming participated as presenter for assistive technology at Braddock Elementary's Career Day event. I was the organizer of the event, and personally reached out to Mr. Fleming to ask him to consider participating as a presenter. Mr. Fleming shared the work he does to support children with learning challenges or disabilities. During his presentation, a student noticed a device Mr. Fleming was displaying. The student shared that she had a brother who had some challenges and at a doctor's visit with her brother, the doctor showed the same device to her mother and stated that her brother would benefit from the device because he could communicate with the family. The students asked Mr. Fleming how she can get more info about the device for her mother.  She also asked how she could get the device. On Thursday, November 15th, Mr. Fleming returned to Braddock Elementary. He stopped by the classroom of the young lady.  Mr. Fleming gave the student the device, showed her how to operate it for her brother and mother and told her to take it home. This was such an amazing gesture. Mr. Fleming’s selfless act of kindness was such a beautiful thing to do. The student's teacher shared this experience with me, and she took a photo of Mr. Fleming sitting on the floor showing the student how to operate the device. The teacher also shared the moment at which the student was given the device was truly "life changing" for the student. Her eyes were wide, and a smile covered her face. Receiving the device will forever be a "Memorable Moment" for the young lady. As her teacher said, "Mr. Fleming spoke to numerous students and teachers on Career Day. He remembered the young lady. He truly heard her! Mr. Fleming helped to "Make A Difference" in the lives of the family."

Kathleen Moskowitz, Herndon ES - View the celebration!

"Kathleen Moskowitz is new to FCPS but comes to us with experience. She is a third-grade teacher at Herndon Elementary School and has a class of VERY high needs. Every day she has a smile on her face as each day is a different challenge with her students. Kathleen has bent over backwards for her students, and even though her day is extremely hard, she has the patience of a saint! She even bought a new pair of sneakers for one of her students because the student's sneakers were very worn out you could see his socks. Herndon Elementary is lucky to have her!

Emily Velez and Diane Quezada- Bin, Falls Church HS

"Diane Quezada- Bin, a public health nurse and Emily Velez, a dental careers instructor at Falls Church Academy, worked together to coordinate a dental screening for the kindergarten and first grade students at Annandale Terrace Elementary School during two days in the month of October. They worked together to coordinate with Dr. Julie Jung, a dentist, and also a former dental careers instructor at Falls Church Academy, to bring in 20 juniors and seniors from Falls Church Academy dental course students to help with running the dental screening. During the screening, they saw about 200 students in kindergarten and first grade at Annandale Terrace, and these students learned about dental hygiene, safety, and received the screening. Emily, Diane, and Julie's combined effort didn't stop at the screening but went above and beyond to coordinate for some of the students with dental emergencies to receive a treatment from local dentists with reduced fees or even free of charge. We are so thankful for these amazing ladies to help coordinate this dental screening for our students at Annandale Terrace Elementary School."

-Essel Linton, Annandale Terrace ES

Region 3

Charles Cornwell, Edison HS

"Mr. Cornwell went above and beyond just being a teacher! Mr. Cornwell taught his students how to take an old beat-up truck and turn it into my son’s dream truck and make it ready for he and his grandfather to show in Ocean City, this was a dream that my son and his grandfather had always talked of. Mr. Cornwell not only taught my son the skills to do this but also without my son knowing taught him valuable life skills. Mr. Cornwell stayed after school many days to help my son achieve his dream, this is not something that is required of a teacher. This proves how much a teacher cares and the passion they have for the subject they teach! This will be something my son will always carry with him and a memory that he and his grandfather will always cherish all due to Mr. Cornwell. I have before and after pictures of the amazing work that FCPS auto collision and Mr. Cornwell have done."

Trevor Echols, South County HS (pictured) - View the celebration!

"Once in a while you cross paths with a person who can change a life. Freshman year of high school is hard. Being a teenage girl is hard. Add that to some anxiety and throw in a dash of social media and life can be hard when you are 14. Last year my daughter’s counselor literally changed her life. She went from not wanting to get out of bed and go to school, to her sophomore year thriving. He checks on her daily, attended her varsity softball games on his own time last year just so she could see a safe face. Became a safe place for her when she needs a moment. He has and continues to go out of his way just to make sure she is ok. I know his job is to be there and help, but he has done more than I could ever repay him for. There are truly some special people in the world, and I am thankful we were able to meet one."

Region 5

Denisse Stein, Stone MS

"Ms. Stein has contributed so much to the Stone Middle School community that it is hard for me to sit here and choose where to start. Today, Ms. Stein hosted our first ever Stone Middle School boutique providing families in need the opportunity to shop (for FREE!) here at school for their winter needs including hats, coats, hygiene items, pants, and shirts. She organized the clothing drive in our community, and then set up shop to distribute donations to others. It has made a huge impact on our families in need. One of our parents said "Mrs. Denisse has been with us 100% step by step to give us the tools in everything related to technological assistance, meetings with teachers, she has provided us with all the things we need for my daughter to be a successful student. Thank you very much Mrs. Denisse for your effort, dedication and above all empathy because to be the person that you are because you put yourself in the shoes of us parents and that is why you help us move forward, I am glad from the bottom of my heart that they dedicate this to you a big hug. I cannot express my gratitude towards her. The truth is that you have an excellent person as a link between the school and the community.” Thank you, Ms. Stein, for making such a positive impact on our Stone caring culture!"

-Sonya Williams, Stone MS

Region 6

Rosemond Nkansah, Lane ES

"Last Thursday morning a student stepped in dog waste on the way to school, and it was all over the bottom of her sneaker and in all the little grooves. It smelled terrible and we didn't want it getting all over the floors. Rose is one of our custodians, and I asked her if we could use the utility sink in the custodial closet to try to rinse the shoe off. Instead, Rose got a bucket of soapy water and a stiff broom and took the student's shoe outside to clean it off herself. Rose spent at least 15 minutes thoroughly cleaning the student's shoe, even though we're short a custodian, and she had many other tasks to take care of. The next day she even asked me how the student was doing and if her shoe had dried quickly. Every time I see her, Rose is cheerful and willing to help out, above and beyond her specific job description. I'm so thankful to have her at Lane!"

Ian Brodie, Lake Braddock SS

"Mr. Brodie shows care and understanding on so many levels. Recently, he organized a family meet-and-greet where teachers were able to connect with and welcome to the Lake Braddock community the parents of two of our students. They had been separated for two very long years and finally were reunited just a few weeks ago. Mr. Brodie had known the students and helped in more ways that I can remember not only during the difficult school journey but also navigating life in America. Thank you for your passion and making our ESOL students and their families belong."

-Milka Willis, Lake Braddock SS

------

Karizma Glenn, Bull Run ES

-Rebecca Cousins, West Springfield HS

------

Susan Kwan, Dunn Loring Center

"Ms. Kwan provided excellent services when she agreed to step in and help with a difficult and ongoing meeting process with a family who needed educational terminology explained in Korean. We had prior difficulty with outside contracted interpreters, who could not understand some of the educational language, which is not common in day to day interpretation. Ms. Kwan indicated that she normally doesn't accept interpretation jobs, as she has been employed as an interpreter for a long time. However, after hearing about the family and their persistence and patience-she stepped up and turned what could have been a potentially difficult situation around! Ms. Kwan was professional, compassionate, thorough, patient, provided us with excellent service and I am proud to recommend her for FCPS Cares. She is a well deserving nominee. "

-Nicole Ingegneri, Keene Mill ES

------

Jonathan Baker, Haycock ES

"Mr. Baker was my favorite teacher ever. He was the kind of teacher that didn't have to ask for silence or good manners. Everyone respected him so much that he didn't need to. When I walked into the classroom, I was so happy he was my teacher. An example of this was how every time we had a test the next day, we would play Jeopardy to review the test material. Also, every month, he decorated the classroom differently, with bright lights and photos and scented candles. Mr. Baker made an impact on every student that he taught."

-anonymous

"Ms. Poloncak is my son's third grade teacher. Since we are new to FCPS this year, Ben was nervous about starting at a new school. And this is the first time he would go to school without a sibling there too. From day one she helped my son feel welcome in class. A few weeks after school started, she went above and beyond by calling to let us know that our son was doing really well in class and reporting on the nice things Ben had done for his classmates. She also sat down with us at the parent teacher conference and not only reported things that he did well, but what we could do at home to help him improve. I appreciate her the kindness that she shows not only to my child, but to all her students. You can tell she has a real passion for teaching and helping her students reach their highest potential. She really has made this year so far great!"

Hena Hasan, Freedom Hill ES

"This recognition is long overdue. My daughter had Ms. Hasan a few years ago and we are so fortunate that she was placed with Ms. Hasan. Ms. Hasan is a compassionate, caring and nurturing individual and it reflected in the classroom. Our daughter was excited to go to school everyday and she blossomed under Ms. Hasan. Ms. Hasan challenged our daughter, motivated her to step out of her comfort zone and provided positive reinforcement through the school year. We wish our son had been placed with Ms. Hasan as well. Thank you for everything Ms. Hasan and we miss you!!"

After the professional development, teachers were constantly discussing how neurodiversity impacts their thoughts, behaviors, and perceptions. They also began to dialogue about the neurodiversity mindset tool and how this impacts their teacher language and actions each day. These discussions that moved our teachers' thinking forward was due to her powerful, succinct, clear and relevant PD. Her PD was content-focused, incorporated active learning, contained opportunities for collaboration, and integrated time for reflection. Our staff is looking forward to her next PD in January. We cannot thank her enough for partnering with Centreville to ensure equitable learning opportunities transpire for all students!"

Colleen Barron, Daniels Run ES

"I just want to give a shout out to Ms. Barron, my son's 4th grade teacher. At back to school night in September I already felt like she knew my son well, she knew all about his family and hobbies. She communicates regularly with families about what the students are learning, what fun things they have been doing and when assessments will take place. She always sends home study guides and reminders to keep us in the loop. I ran into her at the book fair and she was getting a book for a student who was having a tough day. She came to the Friday movie night and stayed for the whole movie to watch with a group of her students. Elizabeth Ramirez, Davis Career Center

"Elizabeth has LITERALLY saved the day three times within the last week or so.

1. Elizabeth is a team player and always helps with a smile. Last week, the stress was high and the staff coverage was low. She was asked to supervise five students while I was dealing with a dog in the ER yesterday and half the class was on a CBI. She stepped up quickly and helped the students have a meaningful and productive morning.

2. Elizabeth is very careful and looks out for all the students in the school. Our work site students ride the bus to and from work and Elizabeth rides on the bus with the students daily. She noticed that one of another class’s students wasn’t on the bus twice and alerted her teacher. Due to Elizabeth’s observant nature this student was able to go home on the bus and have a calm/normal rest of her day.

3. Elizabeth also helps to protect students who are non-verbal at our school. While performing bus duty, she noticed a student was not in the correct location! She calmly walked the student back to safety in their classroom. Keeping students safe is so important at DCC, especially when they can’t communicate in typical ways. Way to go Elizabeth, DCC is SO lucky to have you!"

-Deborah Maletz, Davis Career Center

Rebecca McLenithan, Fort Hunt ES

"Ms. McLenithan brightens my day while she does morning duty by doing her “rounds” on the upper floor. She just pops in to say hello and allows the kids to see her and become familiar with her. While I know that often times, she is pulled in a hundred different directions by students, staff, admin, and parents, I never know when she has had a difficult day unless I ask. Her demeanor is always so positive and upbeat that even when she is processing her own frustrations, she is available for others with no judgement and lots of smiles. Rebecca seems to have a never-ending supply of patience and goodwill. I’m glad she is here at Fort Hunt to share it with us!"

Vinh Tran, Danh Phan, and Danny Janes, Woodson IT Center

"I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for the outstanding support provided by Vihn, Danh, and Danny for the installation and training of new projectors in our math classrooms at Stone MS. Their professionalism, timeliness, technical expertise, and dedication to ensuring a smooth transition to the new system did not go unnoticed. The training and information they shared was comprehensive, making it easy for our teachers to integrate their projector seamlessly into their teaching routines. Their patience in addressing questions and concerns was truly appreciated. Susan Kwan, Gatehouse Admin Center

"Ms. Kwan provided excellent services when she agreed to step in and help with a difficult and ongoing meeting process with a family who needed educational terminology explained in Korean. We had prior difficulty with outside contracted interpreters, who could not understand some of the educational language; which is not common in day to day interpretation. Ms. Kwan indicated that she normally doesn't accept interpretation jobs, as she has been employed as an interpreter for a long time. However, after hearing about the family and their persistence and patience, she stepped up and turned what could have been a potentially difficult situation around! Ms. Kwan was professional, compassionate, thorough, patient, provided us with excellent service and I am proud to recommend her for FCPS Cares.  She is a well deserving nominee. Very sincerely, Nicole Ingegneri."

Dae Kim, Stonecroft Transportation Center

"Every day since the first day of school! Dae had a list of students and introduced himself on the first day. Of course, he is always on time. He reminds kids about the bus rules, as needed, so he is aware of what his passengers are doing and they know to follow along with the basic rules. He greets students with sincerity and happiness in his voice the kids can recognize as friendly. Our kids switched to an after-school program and Dae asked about it, so he is looking to see who is onboarding in the afternoons and who isn't. Dae knows who is on his bus and who isn't. When I know the kids won't be in school a few days, I let Dae know because he is attentive. He isn't Santa, but Dae has a list and he checks it twice, I am certain. All bus drivers should do this. Not all FCPS bus drivers are this wonderful. FCPS still ranks well among other schools, and I think Dae meets the high standards of FCPS every school day. It isn't realistic to think all bus drivers are going to do their job so well, so consistently. I've heard other parents on the route say very nice things about Dae....and kids know who he is and smile about him.  Maybe one kindergartner had a difficult morning the first day of school getting on the bus and leaving 'mom' but s/he and many others have gotten on the bus every morning with a sense of calm. Dae gives soft encouragement and his student-passengers trust him and follow along, saying bye to their parents without much ado. My kids will begin taking the bus home in December and they are okay, no anxiety about it. Sometimes one kid goes to school without the other, but no upset or anxiety being on the bus without a sibling. Neither kid has experienced not being let off at our house-stop, someone taking their belongings and toss them around, etc. Same neighborhood, same student-passengers-neighbors but this year it has been a better school bus ride experience, above and beyond any initial expectations. Thank you, Dae! Your kindness and professional attention-to-detail gives happiness to your student-passengers. My kids do not want to be late to catch your bus. Sometimes I encourage them to get ready faster because you will be ready to pick them up and catching your bus is something they look forward to doing. You greet them personally every morning by name...much better than being dropped off at school. You start their school day in such a calm and happy way. Thank you, sincerely."

Noah Freeman, Fairfax HS

"There is no other way to express how important the experiences my daughter has had with Mr. Freeman except by saying how much she has grown as a student, musician and a person under his instruction. He has helped her develop her leadership skills, her compassion towards others and her skills as a musician. She has learned that hard work truly does pay off. Working and doing your best is worth the time and effort it takes. She is also learned to trust in others and that they trust in her as well. I am impressed with her skills as a musician under his instruction, but more impressed with the person she is becoming. He is a great teacher and a mentor to my child and I applaud him."

Denise Castaldo, Jefferson Tech HS

"Dr. Castaldo cares about her students. I've experienced this first hand. She conducts individual meetings during 8th period, and I remember talking to her extensively about literature and life. Not only is she intelligent in English, but also the analysis that comes with it. It is impressive the way she facilitates analysis and deep thinking in her class. For instance, in her class we have deep discussions about topics in literature and life, such as materialism, equality, and racism. I have not found a teacher who has done that to such a level that she has. After studying abroad, I realize just how blessed I was to have her as a teacher because Dr. Castaldo's teaching style is unique."

"Thu has been an incredible part of the transition process for a Vietnamese family whose child with multiple disabilities is aging out of FCPS. This is a very difficult transition for many families, so having an interpreter who a family trusts and can relate to is so important and can make going through the many meetings and changes so much more smooth for our students and their families. Thu has gone above and beyond to make sure she understands each process and all of the paperwork so that she can clearly explain it to the family. She has ensured she can be there for each important meeting and I, and the family, are just so grateful to her, for her kindness, thoroughness, and reliability. Tim Roberson, Woodson IT Center

"Tim Roberson is terrific to work with. He’s been very supportive of me, a new news show sponsor. At the beginning of the year, he came to our school to train the adults, and the next week he was able to change his schedule at the last minute to come back and train our very first student news crew. He’s been responsive to emails, phone calls, and emergency malfunctions. He’s offered to plan with me to create a student training workshop when we’re ready to learn more about news show possibilities. When we found an additional monitor, he offered suggestions for how to use it. When students and staff requested implementing portions of the news in Spanish, he came back to install the monitor to be used as a teleprompter for our new Spanish speaking anchors. His knowledge of other schools has led to collaborations and sharing that have helped us improve. Tim is a kind, knowledgeable, dependable expert.  Best of all, he is patient with my learning curve and I am very grateful to have his support."

Jeff Niner, Mount Vernon HS

"Jeff Niner deserves to be coach of the year. His work ethic reflects his care for our children as students first, citizens second, and athletes third; a model for all high school coaches to follow and students to emulate.  He deserves recognition for his commitment to MVHS Cross Country and his student athletes. During his first year in 2022, Jeff started a team returning from COVID with ten students. He forged those ten into a family that others wanted to join, and now has 44 student athletes. Jeff is as much a teacher as he is coach.  Children respond to him. They are honest with him and they react to his candor in return.  His teaching style makes a challenging sport accessible for students who would otherwise have had to join a larger team. Somehow these children love running as much as they do racing. In an environment where drugs are cheap and sports are expensive, each of these athletes have made a commitment to him and to each other. MVHS runners understand teamwork by his example. Every single student on this team has grown in leaps and bounds by his wealth of information, foresight, and caring heart. He has never once belittled a student but has met them where they are encouraging them every step of the way and being present in their moments of success and learning with them. He has also taught and shown his student athletes how to balance life on the XC course with their academic responsibilities. He always sees potential regardless of the skills a student brings to the team. He has created a cultural of respect. Jeff is as much a teammate to students as parents. He is constantly available to the parents and guardians of the cross-country team and helps teach us to better support our runner during the XC season. He answers our questions and addresses our concerns without judgement. His weekly team emails are full of love for the support, encouragement for his team, celebrations of small achievements and large ones. The emails show dedication with his outlined training plan that includes reasons for certain work outs to parents and students have full by into his training program. These teens go everywhere together, support each other in the halls of MV as well as on the course, and have learned some important life lessons along the way. He has not just grown a team, but he has created a family. Coach Niner isn't just coaching runners to run long and hard, he is coaching teenagers to become amazing and caring adults. He is a true blessing to the MV community and we all hope he continues to stay and coach our youth during these pivotal moments in their high school careers. We are blessed that Coach Niner is our cross-country coach and can never thank him enough for all he is done for our children."

Jeff Niner, Mount Vernon HS

"Coach Niner deserves to be recognized for his commitment to MVHS Cross Country and his student athletes. When he first started coaching XC at Mount Vernon High School last fall (2022) his team consistent of 9-14 students. His team now holds 44 student athletes. While growing his program, he teaches and coaches interchangeably. They are one and the same for him. After holding XC clinics, he teaches his athletes the ins and outs of successful training. These allows the sport to be available to all students regardless of their experience with running. His clinics include nutrition education for running and cooling down, what gear is available to them and how to take care of it, how to handle feeling comfortable versus dealing with a running injury. He has on several opportunities tried to get his runners into community 5Ks that also have sponsors so that students could access quality running gear at lower costs. He also is constantly available to the parents and guardians of the cross country team and helps teach and support us how to better support our son or daughter during the XC season. He answers our questions and addresses our concerns without judgement. His weekly team emails are full of love for the support, encouragement for his team, celebrations of small achievements and large ones. WJ Feilen, Hayfield SS

"Wendy has a lot of knowledge and resources that she uses to help other colleagues. Recently, she has developed a way to have students sign in and out of class and be able to track it electronically. Since we no longer have access to e-hall pass this is something we are trying out to see how it works and she has been really helpful in providing the QR code to teachers and track student whereabouts. It never hurts to try something new that could potentially help solve problems we encounter, so I'm grateful that she's helping others of us who are eager to contribute to the safety and success of our school. She has also shared information regarding the FSA program that I wasn't aware of before and because of the time she took to show me and talk with me, now we have an FSA account and look forward to using it for our family's benefit. Thank you for being a caring colleague Wendy."

Lauren Lipton, Langley HS

"I would like to recognize Ms. Lauren Lipton, Langley High School counselor for her outstanding customer service and expert knowledge of the curriculum offered. We moved to Langley High School before the 2021-22 school year and Ms. Lipton did an amazing job of transferring the units my daughter took while she was attending a school in Switzerland to her FCPS transcript. She had to translate the Swiss course curriculum and match it to the appropriate FCPS courses. She kept us informed and educated us on the rationale on which Swiss courses match the FCPS course. This summer, my daughter had to change a class which resulted in a significant change to her entire 2023-24 schedule. Ms. Lipton demonstrated an incredible customer service to explain the scheduling impact and what were the alternative classes available. She even went as far as convincing my daughter to take a class that was outside of her comfort zone. Now, my daughter is in love with the course."

At the conclusion of the school year she applied to work during the summer with our 2022 ESY Program. In 2022 she returned to Quander as a classroom teacher. The students love her and love working with and for her. Dominique's gifts of patience, consistency and relationship building allows her to get the best out of every student. Maison Chaffin, Eagle View ES

"Ms. Chaffin stepped in, during her lunch break, to assist a clinical team member, special education teacher, and principal with a student in crisis. Staff made multiple attempts to engage with the student to get him to transition to his next location without success. The student immediately responded to Ms. Chaffin as she coached him through picking up his belongings that he threw on the floor. She encouraged him, celebrated small wins, and let him use one of his favorite plushies from her classroom. This is not the first time I have seen Ms. Chaffin go out of her way to support this student who isn't even in her class but she has formed a good relationship with. It's amazing to see the impact that she has on students in the building."

Jennifer Price, Mantua ES

"My husband and I were very impressed by Mrs. Price during our parent/teacher conference yesterday. We were the last timeslot of the afternoon, and things were a bit behind schedule. I am a school psychologist and my husband a former teacher, so we are no strangers to meetings or how exhausting days of them can be. Even so, Mrs. Price was as gracious and thoughtful in her conversation with us as though we had been the first meeting of her day. She took the time to answer our questions and spontaneously provided nuanced details about our child's work. Mrs. Price has best practices infused into each facet of the day, and she could pinpoint strengths and areas of development with such specificity that this could easily have been a year-end conversation. The depth of understanding she conveyed about our daughter as a person was what really resonated with me most as a mom. In a few short months, she has forged genuine connections with each of her students, taking the time to notice topics that have inspired connections between classmates, finding out what makes each child tick both in and out of the classroom. We work with kids because there is no work like it. Mrs. Price’s passion for teaching radiates from her when she starts speaking about her students.  We have truly lucked out with such an incredible fourth grade teacher, and we are so grateful she joined Mantua this year."

In addition, you may find Colleen covering the front desk, taking lunch orders, and putting up hallway decorations! She is a true team player who takes care of each and every one of our students, assuring that each of our students feels recognized and respected! Thank you Colleen! You are AMAZING!!!!!!!!"

Elaine Gonzalez, Chantilly HS

"For many years now, Elaine Gonzalez, as well Jocelyn Smith, have set up an exchange program with high school students in France. Initially, it was with Chantilly, France and part of a Sister City Program. My husband and I have 4 kids that have taken French at CHS and we have hosted 6(!) French exchange students over the years. We are still in contact with many of those students. The program has brought life long friendship and many wonderful memories. Thanks to the exposure to the French culture, language and students like themselves, my son is currently applying to a French University for a 3 year undergraduate program and hopes to have a career in diplomacy. The teachers work very hard to make it an engaging experience for all. I hope that CHS will continue this very, very valuable program for many years to come."

"Mr. C helped me with my ceramics project where I am creating a hard sculpture and working on creating coral. He broke down the steps on how to approach sculpting coral since it was a little daunting. When working on ceramic projects if I ever have an idea or sculpture that I'm not sure how to make he helps me to figure out what would be the best ceramic construction technique. With his help I have become a lot better at making decisions and have more confidence in my ceramic art."

"Throughout the entire first quarter our kindergarten teachers have created a warm, welcoming, and effective environment for our new kindergarten student and our family. They see the whole child, care about their home life, culture and family. They have welcomed us and other parents into the cafeteria, classroom, and library enabling us to see firsthand all the joy and learning that happens during the school day. We've received quick feedback about any social emotional concerns as well as instructional activities that challenge my child while still having fun. They even went above and beyond to schedule a popular field trip for our kids even though the activity sold out quickly. These teachers have been at our school for years, but they have no quit in them. Day in and day out they love and care for all the students and it's so amazing. We couldn't be more grateful for their service as teachers."

Her willingness to be part of the collaborative meetings surrounding how we move forward with these new platforms and technologies has been very calming as we move further into the “great unknown.” Sarah is an inspiration to all of us, and shows what “fearlessness” looks like! James Lee and Yungwan Jung, Stonecroft Transportation Center

"On an evening this week, there were late run students at a special education program who had not been picked up. The hour was getting very late and the students and admin at the school were becoming increasingly worried. As myself and a transportation manager scrambled to find a solution to get these students home, Mr. Lee and Mr. Jung volunteered both over the bus radio and over the phone to leave their homes and each return to a bus and drive these students home. Their willingness to brave the cold, dark, and unfamiliarity with the routes and students serves as a shining examples of both what FCPS Transportation, as well as FCPS in general, strives for. These two gentlemen truly are out to fulfill our ultimate objective: to care for our students."

Whitney Landry, Forest Edge ES

"Mrs. Landry is an exceptional teacher who interacts extremely well with students, builds a classroom community and engages with parents. Last year, she planned a cultural event around Thanksgiving where each of the 28 students in the class shared something about their diverse family or cultural traditions. Students invited family member(s) to enjoy a dish that was important to them. As a further example of her caring, commitment and connection to students, although she is no longer at Forest Edge Elementary school, Mrs. Landry still came back to volunteer at the Fall Festival and interact with students."

Sharamaine Williams, Forest Edge ES

"Ms. Williams had a tough role starting as the interim principal approximately one month into the start of the school year, likely with little to no transition or orientation to the school before she started. Further, Ms. Williams does not know how long she will be at Forest Edge. While some might use this as an excuse to do nothing, Ms. Williams is working to make the school more open and welcoming. As a first step, she is identifying ways to make the office more inviting (e.g., by removing extra desks). As another example, she wants to be interrupted at any time to meet with parents. Further, she is identifying ways to engage with more families by posting announcements about the school in local housing community bulletin boards. This is crucial in a school that has historically had very low attendance at events like back to school night for parents (e.g., maybe 1/3 of the parents attending)."

Lori Gingrich, Great Falls ES

"Mrs. Gingrich is an amazing person. She and her husband have made the ultimate sacrifice of being a military family and serving our country. Most recently, Mrs. Gingrich has offered to speak to one of the military families at our school to discuss the various options the military and FCPS can provide to their child. She has mentored this child for 4 years and has developed a strong connection with him. Evan Kalinkos, Frost MS

"Every year, Frost 8th graders are moved by an inspirational figure. This person is honest, earnest, and committed to standing up for what's right. His decency gives him an unusual authority. It allows him to overcome a sea of cynicism and convince people, persuading them to be better. In 8th grade, that figure is Jefferson Smith, the character played by Jimmy Stewart in the 1939 classic Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. The Civics students I've had start the film as cynics, groaning at the prospect at a creaky black-and-white film. By the end, they're idealists. Some may be too cool to admit it, but their intent gaze during the filibuster scene shows they get it. They care. In 7th grade, that figure for a quarter of Frost students is Evan Kalinkos. From the time Mr. Kalinkos came to Fairfax 12 years ago, Travelers history students have appreciated having someone in their corner. There are no syrupy tricks or power trips. He leads them through the material in the same energetic, affable way he does everything else. Student respect him because they're not intimidated or talked down to. They recognize a clear, chill person who was once in the same place they were, so they buy in. I've honestly never heard a student complain about him before and, until last year, I'd never seen a Travelers history student in trouble. Last fall, as I was passing in the hall, I saw a student outside his room, clearly in trouble. Instead of a finger-wagging rant, which I'm sure the student deserved, Mr. Kalinkos was asking questions. "What might help in class? What can I do to make things easier?" Delivered by someone else, those words could have seemed weak, passive-aggressive, or condescending. Delivered by him, they seemed genuine and were probably a surprise for a student all-too-used to lectures. That same approach has worked for years of Basketball Club rascals. 40 active kids unleashed at the end of the day could be a minefield. One gym over in the 8th grade gym, or two gyms over at Lifetime, it often is. With him there to guide them, everyone gets what they want: minimal drama, maximal playing time. I appreciate all Evan has done for me over the years. Early on, it was a blast co-running flag football, Quidditch, and Capture The Fried Chicken. Recently, it's been great to share student-faculty basketball, volleyball, Minute To Win It, and the most epic arm wrestling match in the history of the modular. During difficult times, he's been an invaluable sounding board and ally. I wish he could convince the Knicks to win a championship in our lifetime, but that may be asking too much. He's only human. In the end, Mr. Kalinkos is not Mr. Smith. Evan is not naive; he recognizes when kids try to push limits. When things get absurd, he has a clear, knowing smirk. He does, however, fit two of Mr. Smith's best lines: "I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules if, behind them, they didn't have a little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness and a little looking out for the other fella too. Mr. Paine said once that lost causes were the only causes worth fighting for, and he fought for them once. For the only reason any man ever fights for them. Because of just one plain simple rule. Love thy neighbor."

Elisa Raddock, Frost MS

"There's an inscription on the gate from the Corner to the University of Virginia that begins: "Here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead." This Thomas Jefferson quote might as well be posted on the door leading into Elisa Raddock's classroom. For 16 years, Elisa has turned students into scholars, training them to question the world around them and respect the people in it. This goes for AA students, ESOL students, everyone. There are rarely behavioral issues in Elisa's classes for the same reason no one lobs spitballs in a seminar. That would not fit the climate. That is not to say Travelers English is always serious. A class that features a series of wild gestures for reading, a cow for writing, and a middle-aged leg-flaunting ham for performing is hilarious. It may not be a daily Beekman explosion, but humor definitely plays a part. Over the years, I've appreciated the many fond memories Elisa has given me: collapsing in Will's room each afternoon in the first year, hunkering down with Meagan, Jan, and Jennifer each night in the second, third, and fourth year, and finding some degree of balance when family came in the years after. Joyful shrieks about babies, laptop carts, battery passages, ancient students, The Rockin' Lock-In, flautas, and scary black cats with arched backs never get old. Also, if there are two humans who know more about Spirit Bear, The Lion King, The Giver, and The Truman Show, I'd like to meet them. Elisa's most important legacy is what she's meant as an educator. During a difficult time in my life, she often came to me and said, "I want to get your professional opinion on this." It renewed my faith. I know that's been true for hundreds and hundreds of students. Carol Ellis' cautionary tale about the dangers of playing with fire would resonate with any reader. Spending three full days in class, however, considering the case from every angle, brings it to the next level. Ultimately, to me, it comes down to her T chart, one that bears a strong resemblance to the inscription on the UVA gate. The chart built on the profusion of post-its students placed on bulletin boards and in Lit Circle novels throughout the year. This simple, powerful method of digging for evidence extended beyond her team. It led several students of mine who were borderline for passing the SOL to pass. Elisa's T Chart of Truth made a difference.

Phoebe Morris, Frost MS

"The founder of UVA, Thomas Jefferson, was a Renaissance Man. In her seven years at Frost, UVA graduate Phoebe Morris has proven herself to be a Renaissance Woman. Considering how humble and generous Phoebe is, she'd probably scoff at the term. It's true though. She's supported gen ed, team taught, advanced academics, CLT lead, College and Career Exploration, Frost Roadways, the Frost Spelling Bee, the Frost 5K, and Poetry Club. This year, she's taking on English 7, ESOL English 7, English 8, ESOL English 8, and Academic Language. So, now that she's established in her career, she's able to settle into a relaxing single-prep breeze. Through all of these endeavors, I've never heard a bad word about her from a staff member, student, or parent. This is public education, so I'm sure there's been a pitchfork somewhere, but I've yet to see one. My most profound interaction with Phoebe was through Poetry Club. Considering her many other responsibilities, she wasn't able to be there every time, but every meeting she attended was genuinely better than the ones she didn't. Her ability to weave in and out of conversations with kids, in the inherently-awkward virtual environment, was remarkable. She was able to navigate tricky emotional territory and embrace wacky hilarity that came up each week. It was hard to forget students' mysteries, her connection to St. Lucia's Day, her cat being included in a poem, "Paris Bound," "The Circle of Poems," and the epic release of the Krakakakakakakaken. As a William and Mary alum, it pains me to support UVA, but like the rest of Frost, I'm grateful for the time I've spent with Phoebe."

Leah Kovak, Hunter Woods ES

"I visited Leah Kovak's 6th grade GME class to see the puppet show her students had been working on throughout the last few weeks and was in awe with the production. This was for many of them the first time they have ever been part of such thing, but with Leah's guidance these students wrote an original story, composed music, and created an original production that I saw them present with pride to our kindergarteners. Seeing the students excitement after the kindergarteners applauded them with cheers and smiles reminded me how fortunate our students are to be surrounded by colleagues that make learning FUN. Thank you Leah!"

Elaine Gonzalez and Jocelyn Smith, Chantilly HS/Westfield HS

"Mrs. Elaine Gonzalez and Mrs. Jocelyn Smith made efforts to make Chantilly/Westfield-Strasbourg, France exchange program happen. Mrs. Gonzalez took the ten students including my daughter to Strasbourg for home stay and Paris in June-July for 10 days. Also, she arranged to have the twenty French students home stay in the Chantilly High School community. Unfortunately, Mrs. Jocelyn Smith couldn’t join due to the lack in number of students. My daughter had a hard time during the pandemic and had depression. However, She showed more interest in taking Mrs. Jocelyn Smith’s French class, but Mrs. Smith left to Westfield High School. My daughter was a bit worried about a new French teacher, but Mrs. Gonzalez made her comfortable, curious and interested more about learning French. She even more shows her interests in participating the French exchange program. We were so happy and comfortable to send our daughter to Strasbourg with Mrs. Gonzalez since she overcame depression. She got along with the French host student and they became lifetime friends when we had the French student for two weeks at our place. This exchange program made my daughter's life change in positive way. And we hope this program keeps going and impacts some students life with wonderful experiences like it did with our daughter. Thank you so much to Mrs. Gonzalez! PS: I couldn’t pick the day since Mrs. Gonzalez has been wonderful, but chose the day, November 1st which was the day the French students left."

Jennifer Larkin, Frost MS

"A 2018 Cuemath study stated that 89 percent of parents feel math is the hardest subject their children study. A 2011 A-to-Z Teachers survey reported 41 percent of teachers think math is the hardest subject to teach, 12 points higher than the number-two answer. If you Google the topic, the most entries on the first page mention math, by a 3 to 1 margin. How lucky then that Jen Larkin is there for Frost students. What makes Jen stand out are her standards. She treats a small-group math student like an advanced one. Intellectually, she modifies and accommodates so the material precisely fits their level, but she never lets them settle. Her compassion is ambition. Her spirit animal is not a cuddly Care Bear; it’s a Mama Grizzly. I saw no clearer example of this than a morning period the last week of school. With classes across the building understandably dimming the lights and easing into AMC Frost, she held a 90-minute escape room. You’d think kids would complain about this, but they were genuinely into it. I was shocked by one kid, typically so concerned with being cool I half expect his chin to drip icicles. There he was though, striving till the end of the period. When he ended up being the first to escape, he let out a fist pump for the ages. A perpetual coaster was floating on air. I’ve also enjoyed staff trivia with Jen in person, on BBCU, and the orientation scavenger hunt. Each was epic. Moreover, I’ve appreciated her medical advice to me, her education advice to everyone on the Fairfax Teachers and Staff FB group, and the mutual admiration she and her daughters have for each other. Frost students, staff, and parents may not find math easy, but with Jen here, everyone is better off."

If you Google the topic, the most entries on the first page mention math, by a 3 to 1 margin. How lucky then that Brenda White is there for Frost students. About the only mean thing about Brenda is her teaching style threatens to take from Amy Perina the title of Frost's Nicest Teacher. The few times I've been with her for math and the many days I was with her for Falcon Focus, her patience seemed infinite. The worksheets, slides, board, and delivery outlined the material as clearly as possible, but numerous kids still had questions. She wouldn't sigh, lash out, or push past -- she'd simply try again, often putting it a different way. More often than not, in the moment, the kid got it. When Brenda first started at Frost, I taught English. Since then, for more time with my kids, I've shifted to an IA position. I appreciate that she has treated me the same in both positions: asking for input, mentioning me in class, providing freedoms, offering options, and expressing gratitude. Most Frost students, staff, and parents may not find math easy, but with Brenda here, everyone is better off."

If you Google the topic, the most entries on the first page mention math, by a 3 to 1 margin. How lucky then that Mickey McDade is there for Frost students. Mickey is clearly on top of the content. If you teach 100+ students and courses as surprisingly different as Math 7 and Math 7HN, you have to be. What makes Mickey stand out is his ability to make kids want to be in both courses. Multiple times in his old and new classrooms, I’ve encountered students who learn Mr. McDade is absent, and they’re disappointed. His ability to break through and connect with the disaffected, to get them to do actual work, deserves notice. I also appreciate his advice about having kids and Spanish immersion, his epic defense in student-faculty basketball, and the many wry comments about the world as we pass in the hall -- a pun on “outlier” being my personal favorite. Frost students, staff, and parents may not find math easy, but with Mickey here, everyone is better off."

Judy Sohn, Frost MS

"Judy Sohn welcomes everyone. She creates a climate in which members are encouraged to be themselves and be recognized for it. A rare day when she has to go through procedures, it's passing through as efficiently as possible so students can get back to creating. It's not about the expertise of the teacher or master artists; it's about the students. In classes at the beginning of the year, Getting To Know You activities are a dime a dozen, and the info doesn't always stick. What Judy's students learn about themselves and the people at their table is hard to forget because they express themselves in eight ways: through watercolor, oil pastel, newspaper, magazine, construction paper, sharpie, crayons, and color pencils. It wasn't simply items on a checklist, each was a new way for students to show who they are and grow as artists. Most of the time each period, Judy is moving in and out of rows, offering feedback that's meaningful because she's already built relationships or students can tell she's open to them. This individual approach continues to the end of the period, when she uses a strategy I've never seen before, and teachers would be wise to replicate. In many classes (and families), cleanup is a bit of a slog -- reminding kids to pick up stuff so many times that it becomes a harangue. Judy narrates who she sees cleaning what throughout. They know that each time they're recognized, it's points added towards their grade, so it's a breeze. There's automatic buy-in. Finally, on a personal level, I appreciate that Judy welcomes me. As an IA coming into an elective, it's easy to be forgotten. She immediately asked me to share an anecdote related to the drawing game and encouraged me to lead the class through a Scattergories icebreaker. She also thanked me when I offered to create a site for an absent student. I might still be a terrible artist (stick figures and box houses are my peak), but being in her class makes me a better teacher and person."

Meghan Short, Frost MS

"When Meghan Short was a student, she must have been Seating Chart MVP. Her diligence, intelligence, creativity, and flexibility could balance and boost even the roughest row. Teachers must have wondered where to put her and where to find a Family Matters cloning machine. One Meghan was not enough! The same quandary occurs now that Meghan is a Frost Instructional Coach. She's in meetings, lunches, classrooms, bus duty, anywhere at a moment's notice, an IA who can be admin. I should throw in Tech Guru as well. During virtual learning, when new plates teetered past each other each week, she knew how to steady them all. Logging onto BBCU for a staff meeting generally meant two things: (1) Will, Julie, Heather, and Amy would make some amusing comment. (2) Meghan would rescue someone who was lost. Instructional Coach can be a tough gig. Historically, talented people have been left adrift. Meghan, though, always seems to find purpose. The key, to me, is authenticity. There are no furrowed brows or forced smiles. She is poised, positive, and herself. People trust her. She brings joy to not just July but each month of the year."

David Raich, Willow Oaks Admin Center

"I had the most positive interaction with David. I had a repeated issue trying to submit time from an HR-11 into MyTime. David reached out to let me know and I attempted to resolve it. It took me two attempts, but David was very patient and kind, using humor while assisting me. Also, David was quick to let me know when it was confirmed and correct. It made my morning to have such a positive interaction and I appreciate David's help in getting my information entered into the system correctly!  Thanks for supporting FCPS staff with kindness, it is appreciated!"
