About Our School

Union Mill Elementary is a micro-world rich with love, laughter, and learning shared among students, staff members, and families. The teaching staff at Union Mill truly values the individuality and uniqueness of each student and is committed to academic excellence.

Teachers and students work together; the uncommon is common at Union Mill. Union Mill students participate in a host of in-school and after-school enrichment activities such as SCA, patrols, chorus, band and strings, Chess Club, Ecology Club, Odyssey of the Mind, Library Pages, Word Masters Challenge, and UMTV news broadcasters.

The PTA is a pillar of support providing classroom volunteers, technology hardware, field trips, cultural arts programs, Hands on Science and visiting authors of children’s literature. Union Mill's gym is equipped with a climbing wall to increase upper body strength, coordination and build self confidence. Integration of technology across the curriculum promotes problem solving and enhances the school’s language arts, math, social studies and science curriculums. Working together to improve the quality of life for the children, the Union Mill Elementary school community is a visionary leader for the new millennium. It is the belief of Union Mill's staff that children are mankind’s most important resource. The goal of the educational community is to empower the students to reach their full potentials and become lifelong learners. Educators are committed to working together to provide a strong instructional program in a safe, nurturing environment which fosters mutual respect, self-discipline, and intellectual curiosity. To reach this goal, Union Mill staff and community members work to:

  • Meet or exceed the Virginia Standards of Accreditation, as measured by the Standards of Learning tests in mathematics, science, English, history/social science, and technology
  • Strengthen the community-school partnerships by improving communication to parents regarding the Fairfax County Public Schools elementary schools curriculum
  • Enable students to develop mastery of basic skills Encourage creativity through a variety of open-ended and diverse experiences
  • Promote active learning experiences
