April is the Month of the Military Child!
Recognizing and thanking children from military families for their contributions and sacrifices.
April is the Month of the Military Child, a time to recognize children from military families for their contributions and sacrifices. We would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank children from Uniformed Services, State Department, and Foreign Services and other families for their service and sacrifices. We recognize that children serve too. The nationwide commemoration was established in 1986 by former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger.
Celebrating Military-Connected Youth
An April 2023 Salute to Our Students and Their Families
Meet some FCPS students and their military families. These students face unique challenges and show a lot of resilience and strength. We would like to say thank you for your service to ALL members of these families.
Meet Abby
Abby is a Senior at Woodson High School and a proud member of their crew team. Her father serves in the United States Air Force. (Video produced in 2022.)
Meet Elvis
Elvis is a eighth-grader at Longfellow Middle School. His father serves in the U.S. Navy and was deployed when the video was produced in 2022.
Student Perspectives
In each part of this four-part series, produced in 2022, several students talk about life in military families.
Purple Up on April 19, 2023
Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience.
To show our support, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on April 19 for military children.
Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue.
We extend our appreciation for the service of all children from military families and celebrate them by wearing purple in an effort to say “Thank You!” Whether or not you know any military-connected youth, please take a moment to recognize and honor them by wearing purple on April 19.
Post your picture and tag #PurpleUpFCPS. Let’s Purple Up! for military kids!
