Highlights

  • South Lakes ranks #32 among D.C. area schools and #212 in the national rankings of the 2011 Challenge Index!

  • The South Lakes Sentinel, led this year by co-managing editors Emily Lipscomb and Kaitlin Welker (Class of 2013), earned a best of show ranking at the NSPA Fall Convention in Minneapolis. The Sentinel placed 9th nationally in the 13-16 page category for its first print issue of the 2011-12 school year. Nine scholastic journalists from South Lakes attended the convention, held from Nov. 16-19, attending workshops in writing, online media, and digital photography, along with session covering all aspects of scholastic journalism.

  • Seahawk 10th grader Olivia Wolfe was recently honored by Supervisor Hudgins as the 2011 Hunter Mill District, “Champions of Character in Sports” Female Athlete Award Winner. Great job Olivia!

  • Congratulations to the SLHS Choral Program for being selected to perform at the Virginia Music Educators Association conference in Norfolk.

  • The South Lakes High School Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform as part of the Music for All National Festival, presented by Yamaha, March 15-17 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Music for All National Festival is recognized as the epitome of scholastic instrumental music festivals in America. Music for All is one of the nation's largest and most influential organizations advocating in support of music education.

  • Congratulations to the Class of 2011 - 10.3% were admitted to UVA (3rd highest among FCPS regular high schools) and 7.2% to William &Mary (5th among FCPS regular high schools).

  • Congratulations to the South Lakes Band, Orchestra and Choral programs for being recognized as a Blue Ribbon School by the Virginia Music Education Association.

  • Senior Dues are $40 until Spring Break (the end of 3rd Quarter, March 30). After that, Senior Dues go up to $60.

  • SLHS - Driver Education Parent/Guardian Teen Traffic Safety Program. As a part of classroom driver education instruction, students and their parent/guardian are required to attend a 90-minute traffic safety program. This requirement must be met before a student will receive a Driver Education Certificate of Completion (DEC-1 card). This program will be held on the following dates during the 2011-2012 school year. All meetings will take place in the Auditorium.
    • Thursday February 9 at 7 pm
    • Thursday April 19 at 7pm
    • Tuesday May 15 at 7 pm

  • VIRGINIA CONCUSSION and BRAIN INJURY STATUTE - Virginia Code 22.1-271.5 requires all student-athletes and a parent complete a concussion education program. Upon successful completion of this program, the school will have your record updated. Students and parents must complete separate programs. Required before an athlete can attend tryouts!

  • Athletic Administration Fee: On May 20, 2010 the Fairfax County School Board approved fees for participating in VHSL athletics and activities.

  • Check out the Activities Office page for all the information on fall sports, clubs and activities.

  • National Quality Products (NQP) is an approved vendor for class rings for FCPS. Class rings may be ordered through their website www.nationalqp.com
