Dr. Lisa Coons, Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction, is interested in hearing from military families across Virginia.

Military Children 2024 World Expo

The Military Children’s Six Foundation is hosting a Military Children World Expo on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City.

The theme of this year’s expo is “Resilience - The Unstopppable Power.” The Military Children 2024 World Expo is open to the public and a free event. 

Leading up to this event, the Military Children’s Six Foundation continues to host multiple, 90-minute in-person pre-expo workshops in Alexandria, Virginia, with virtual attendance options as well.  Adults and students of all ages are invited to attend.  To learn more about the Expo and the workshops, please visit Military Children World Expo.

Carry The Load National Relay

  National Relay

As the month of May approaches, the Carry the Load organization is gearing up for their National Relay campaign to honor Memorial Day and those who gave their life while serving the nation.  Carry the Load is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing awareness to the sacrifices made by military personnel, veterans, first responders, and their families.  

The National Relay will be traveling through Northern Virginia on Sunday, May 5, 2024, and stopping at the Alexandria National Ceremony for a community event beginning at 2:15 p.m. To learn more about the route and schedule of events, please visit the East Coast Route Guide.   

In addition to the community event, Carry the Load invites individuals and teams to participate in tracking their miles walked throughout the month of May.  By participating, individuals can actively contribute to honoring the sacrifices of our military, veterans, and first responders.

Our Community Salutes 2024 High School Senior Enlistee Recognition Ceremony May 3, 2024 

 

In tribute to the courage and commitment of high school students embarking on a path of military service, Our Community Salutes (OCS) is a national non-profit organization focused on supporting the young men and women who have chosen to serve the nation. OCS provides resources and information to both the enlistees and their families as they navigate the transition into military life.  In addition, OCS strives to create a sense of community for the enlistees and families and honors the new enlistees by hosting recognition ceremonies throughout the nation.  

On Friday, May 3, 2024, at 7 p.m. OCS of Northern Virginia is hosting their 2024 High School Senior Enlistee Recognition Ceremony at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, VA.  This no-cost special occasion provides an opportunity for families and community leaders to celebrate those who made the brave decision to enlist in the armed forces.

  Academy Day - April 20, 2024

Virginia Senator Mark Warner extends a warm invitation to high school and middle school students, their parents and guardians, and school counselors to participate in Academy Day.  This event offers valuable insight into higher education and service to the nation.

Scheduled to take place at Randolph-Macon College on April 20, 2024 from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Academy Day will serve as a comprehensive guide to the five distinguished United States service academies and their admission processes.  Attendees can expect to gain a deeper understanding of the pathways available to them by meeting with representatives from the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board, various ROTC programs, and the Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership at Mary Baldwin University.  Tours of Randolph-Macon College also will be available at the end of the event.

Purple Up! Day - April 17, 2024

Throughout the month of April, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will be honoring the invaluable contributions of military-connected youth with the Month of the Military Child and Purple Up! Day.  

FCPS would like to express its gratitude to these unsung heroes. With approximately 14,000 military-connected students, FCPS recognizes the extraordinary strength military-connected students possess in order to navigate the military lifestyle. The resilience and courage of our military-connected youth does not go unnoticed, and their commitment to supporting their service member parents and guardians deserves the utmost admiration and respect.  

As part of this month-long recognition, FCPS will celebrate Purple Up! Day on April 17, 2024.  Schools and community members are encouraged to wear purple as a visible gesture of their appreciation and support for military-connected youth. In addition to Purple Up! MCEC Call for the Arts

The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) invites military-connected children to showcase their experiences, dreams, and challenges through art.

The MCEC Call for the Arts program provides military-connected students a platform to explain what being a military-connected child means to them through any medium such as writing, painting, and performance.   

Winners will receive an invitation to the MCEC Global Summit in Washington, DC, from July 29-31, 2024, along with an Amazon gift card and recognition on MCEC’s social media and website!  

The MCEC Call for the Arts is open to students in grades K-12.  All entries and release forms must be received by April 30, 2024.  For more information and to download the entry and release form, please visit MCEC The Call for the Arts.

Blue Star Families Outdoor Explorers for All

Blue Star Families continues to create opportunities to bring together military-connected families and their communities! The Outdoor Explorers for All Program provides a family-centered experience that fosters family connections while enjoying outdoor activities.  Families will have the opportunity to participate in weekend events such as fishing clinics and waterway and park stewardship activities.  All gear and materials will be provided.  Participants will attend five outdoor recreation experiences between April and June 2024.

  Exploring Post-Secondary Options: 2024 Virtual Military Night

As Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students explore their post-secondary options, FCPS School Counseling Services is committed to providing support to students in the areas of career exploration and employment.

On Wednesday, March 20, 2024 from 6 to 8 p.m., FCPS School Counseling Services is hosting a virtual military event to educate families and their high school students about the various pathways. Whether your student is considering enlistment, exploring service academies, or interested in joining ROTC programs, this event will offer valuable information to help them make informed decisions about their future.

Sesame Street for Military Families Photo Shoot 

Sesame Street For Military Families (SS4MF) has been supporting military families for 17 years by celebrating military children and supporting families with age-appropriate strategies to develop strong and resilient military children.  

SS4MF is seeking military families with children no older than 7 years of age to participate in a photography shoot to interact with the Muppets Elmo and Rosita.  The photos and videos are intended to support SS4MF programming and marketing across global platforms. 

The photography sessions will take place May 13-15, 2024, at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB), Fort Belvoir, and Myer Henderson.  Families interested must submit the registration form by the extended deadline: March 21, 2024, at 6 p.m.

Family Engagement Survey

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) strongly believes family engagement is a shared responsibility between home and school. Together, we are the co-creators in preparing students for success.  

The FCPS Family Engagement Survey is available until Friday, March 22. Families are encouraged to complete the survey as it provides the opportunity to share family perspectives and offer feedback on their family’s engagement experience within FCPS. The survey results will help the school division better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our school community.

Parents/caregivers should have received an email invitation with a unique survey link from K12 Insight on March 3. The subject line was: FCPS Family Engagement Survey.  Families may also access the survey through the FCPS website.

The Bridges to Success Networking Career and Education Fair will take place at the National Museum of the United States Army on March 6, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  

This event is open to transitioning service members, military spouses, dependents, and veterans looking to pursue their career and education goals.  Participants will have the opportunity to connect with career enhancement programs, certification programs, post-secondary institutions and employer-sponsored internships and fellowships.  With a variety of exhibitors, attendees can explore diverse pathways to success.

An Opportunity for Military-Connected Teens! Deadline to Apply: Thursday, February 1, 2024

Every military-connected youth deserves to have their voice heard and their experiences validated.  Through content creation, advocacy, and community building, the Bloom organization is empowering military-connected teens to not only navigate the challenges of military life but to thrive as individuals.

Bloom is a teen-led organization that uses social media, blogs, and videos to connect military teens across the world.  As Bloom continues to expand, the organization is accepting applications for a variety of positions*.
