Dear Fairfax Academy Students (and Parents)
We are pleased to welcome you to Fairfax Academy for the 2009 - 2010 school year and are very excited about what's in store for you this year! The academy offers you opportunities not available anywhere else in Fairfax County Public Schools, and in few schools anywhere in the US. We have hosted visiting educators, artists, performers, and business professionals from different areas of the United States. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact the academy office at :703.219.2226. I look forward to a great year at the academy!

In May, Fairfax Academy honored three second year students with its first ever Creative Leaders Scholarship award. Roman Voytko-Barrosse and Elizabeth Cormack were both Fashion Design students who, for their Signature Projects, designed and constructed a thematic line of clothing with the assistance of FD I production teams, which they managed. The original designs were presented on the runway at the Academy Awards program. For his Music & Computer Technology Signature Project, Matthew Schagrin composed an original rhythmic piece entitled “Collections”. The piece was played by the NVCC Annandale Symphony during a full rehearsal. All three of these graduates are continuing their interest in these fields as college freshmen this fall. The scholarships were made possible by the generosity of Apple FCU Education Foundation and Enterprise Car Sales as part of the academy’s Creative Leaders Project.
Chinese Symposium, “Cultural Insights and Global Opportunities”:
Fairfax Academy’s Chinese classes are hosting Chinese language students from Marshall, Robinson, and Thomas Jefferson on Thursday, September 25, for an academic program featuring presentations by three Georgetown University professors. Dr. Philip Kafalas will discuss “Scrounging through Chinese: Music & Lit (among other topics)”; Dr. Theodore H Moran will present “Opportunities for Chinese Language Learners in our Global Society”; Dr. Jingyuan Zhang will discuss “Women and Chinese Films”. Dr. Kafalas and Dr. Zhang are with Georgetown’s Dept of East Asian Languages and Cultures. Dr. Moran is the Marcus Wallenberg Chair at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service. We are honored to have these distinguished scholars with us! The program is supported by a foreign language program grant from the US Dept of Education.

New 3D Animation Software!
The Academy’s Professional Graphics Studio class will be among the first in the country to be teaching 3D Modeling & Animation with a complete Motion Capture device. This cutting edge technology will allow students to learn and practice the skills animators use in developing gaming characters and animated feature films. Area professionals from gaming and digital media companies are assisting with the installation and training on this software and will be visiting the class regularly for mentoring and support. There are still a few seats available in this class for the 2009-2010 school year -- See your counselor for details!
