Students Shadow NVTC Members in Groundhog Shadow Day
Dozens of NVTC companies opened their doors to high school juniors and seniors last Friday as part of Groundhog Job Shadow Day. A partnership with Fairfax County Schools, this day gave 84 students a chance to meet professionals in variety of careers, from engineering to TV production.
Charlene Van Cappel, a senior at South Lakes in Reston, shadowed two television professionals at Cox Communications. "I like it and it's interesting," Van Cappel said about the opportunity. "We were offered different jobs to shadow and I chose this one because I'm in a TV production class at Fairfax Academy."
Van Cappel, along with Tyler Vitello, a junior from West Springfield High School, were just two of the students who received a glimpse of what a future career may look like.
Michael Bass, a producer at Cox, as he instructed Vitello on how to cut tape for Cox Local Edition, a segment that appears at the end of each hour on CNN Headline News.
This was the 11th year for Groundhog Job Shadow Day and it is part of the National Job Shadow Coalition, a national job-shadowing initiative.

NewYork City Career Day
New York - On March 20, 2009, over 250 students gathered long before the break of dawn in front of Fairfax High School. Academy Day in New York City has begun this way for the past four years – shivering students huddling in the dark waiting for the okay to board the buses – but by the end of the long day the students of Fairfax Academy are always glad they attended. The endless walking, the blistering cold, the long bus ride, not even the 5 a.m. departure could deter those 250, the largest group since the annual trip began. The activities during the New York City trip are specific to each individual Academy class, but the purpose is universal – to introduce students to creative professionals, cultural events, career opportunities and expanded skill training related to their field of study. The Fashion Design students met with entrepreneurs in the industry, going behind the scenes in a surface design company and watching as patterns were drawn on the industry’s newest machines. Photography students were introduced to digital photography equipment at Digital Transitions on 35th street, while Pro Graphics Studio students got an inside view of AD Agencies and Commercial Production studios. Music Computer Technology students saw the percussion duo PercaDu perform at the Lincoln Center in the Upper West Side. Master classes were a unique opportunity for students to expand their skills whether it be dancing at one of the best dance studios in the city, Steps on Broadway, or mastering skills behind the camera at the New York Film Academy. At 5:45 p.m., the majority of students departed, but a good number stayed behind for a last few exciting hours on Broadway. The academy split up for dinner and show, seeing Guys & Dolls, Little Mermaid, Shrek, Phantom of the Opera and The 39 Steps before being picked up from Times Square. As the lights of the city dimmed on the horizon, Fairfax Academy students returned to Virginia with a new knowledge of their industry, new skills in their specific dream profession, and possibly a few Big Apple souvenirs jiggling in their pockets.
