Dwannal McGahee - Professionally Certified Hospitality Instructor (CHI)

pic

The American Hotel and Lodging Association’s Educational Institute has recognized Edison Academy’s Hotel Marketing Instructor, Dwannal Wade McGahee, as a Professionally Certified Hospitality Instructor (CHI) for his successful completion of all levels of the CHI Summer Institutes and for 120 internship hours served in the industry.  He is the only Hospitality/Hotel Marketing instructor in Fairfax County Public Schools to have received this prestigious distinction.  Among the many valuable opportunities that Mr. McGahee provides for his students are monthly field study experiences in the industry and an internship program in collaboration with the Comfort Inn,  Hilton Inn, and Hampton Inn of Springfield,Virginia and the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center Hotel. Students rotate through all departments of the hotels during the year long internship; from front desk and catering, to finance and operations even including housekeeping. This autumn students will have additional field study experiences at the Sheraton Premiere Tyson’s Corner, Hershey Park, and the Westin Hotel chain in New York City with more experiences to follow in the spring.

Landscape Design and Turf Management - Saving the Environment

pic

Edison Academy’s Landscape Design and Turf Management students are saving the environment one plant at a time. When students recently learned that the landscaped plantings and materials at the front of Edison High School were about to be bulldozed as a part of the school’s renovation and construction project, they immediately came to the rescue. To save these valuable resources the students began removing the plants and hardscape materials, and working to transplant them to new, safer, locations on campus.

This is just one small part of their work this year to focus on Edison Academy’s Going Green initiative. Students will also be making their own fertilizer through a composting program in collaboration with the Culinary Arts classes and they are designing the working plans to build and maintain a herb and small vegetable garden that will come to fruition later this year to provide produce for use in the Culinary program’s kitchen laboratories.

A focus on growing local is a popular theme of our Presidential First Lady, Michelle Obama, so the students hope to invite her to visit them once their herb garden is built and their plants are growing to see their handiwork and to enjoy a lunch provided by the Culinary Arts program’s Bistro 1093, named for the 1,093 patents that their Academy’s’ namesake, Thomas Alva Edison, acquired during his lifetime.

pic

You Can Get a Head Start on Your Future at Edison Academy Through the Dual Enrollment Agreement with NVCC! If you're looking for ways to cut the costs of a college education even BEFORE you graduate from high school, a great opportunity is available through the Northern Virginia Community College dual enrollment program.  High School students, who are at least 16 years of age, may simultaneously earn high school and college credit by taking Culinary Arts, Automotive Technology, Oracle or Heating Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration classes here at Edison Academy

A reduced NVCC tuition rate may be charged for participation in a dual enrolled course, but successful completion rewards the student with credits earned to satisfy both high school graduation AND earn a NVCC college transcript. Course credits may even be transferable to other institutions in Virginia depending upon the course taken and the college degree program which the student is pursuing.

Quote of the Day

Big Image

Chris Castillo a past student from Oracle - Database Design had this to say about his experience in the class.
" My computer science professors are surprised when I tell them that I have an SQL certification from Oracle. From their experience in teaching, high school students are not taught SQL or even receive an SQL certification. That is left to the upper level college students. I consider myself lucky that I was given the opportunity to take such an important class at such a young age. Very few high schools offer their students Oracle or a similar class. I would have never guessed that taking the Oracle class would make me decide to pursue a career in technology.  I am a Computer Science major at the University of Mary Washington. I am using the skills I learned in the Oracle class and applying them to everyday computer science classes here. Without the Oracle class, I would not feel as confident and be as efficient in any computer science class as I am today."

Brad Rickel, Academy Administrator
