Quarterly Overview of Algebra 1

The objectives and outcomes for each unit are common across FCPS and based on the Virginia Standards of Learning. The pacing by quarter and by week provides an example of how the curriculum can be organized throughout the year. Teacher teams may adjust the pacing or order of units to best meet the needs of students.

Units and Details

Unit 1: Expressions and Operations

Students will:

  • Represent verbal quantitative situations algebraically.
  • Evaluate algebraic expressions for given replacement values of the variables.

Unit 2: Equations and Inequalities

Students will:

  • Solve multistep linear equations in one variable algebraically.
  • Solve literal equations for a specified variable.
  • Solve practical problems involving equations.
  • Solve multistep linear inequalities in one variable algebraically and represent the solution graphically.
  • Solve practical problems involving inequalities.
  • Solve absolute value equations in one variable algebraically. (Honors)
  • Solve absolute value inequalities in one variable algebraically and represent the solution graphically. (Honors)

Unit 3: Functions

Students will:

  • Make connections between and among multiple representations of functions using verbal. descriptions, tables, equations, and graphs.
  • Determine whether a relation is a function.
  • Determine domain and range of a relation.
  • Find intercepts of linear and quadratic function families.
  • Find zeros of linear and quadratic function families graphically.
  • Find values of a function for elements in its domain.

Unit 4: Lines

Students will:

  • Determine the slope of a line when given an equation of the line, the graph of the line, or two points on the line.
  • Write the equation of a line when given the graph of the line, two points on the line, or the slope and a point on the line.
  • Graph linear equations in two variables.
  • Find zeros of linear function families algebraically.

Unit 5: Systems of Equations and Inequalities

Students will:

  • Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically and graphically.
  • Solve practical problems involving systems of equations.
  • Represent the solution of linear inequalities in two variables graphically.
  • Solve practical problems involving inequalities.
  • Represent the solution to a system of inequalities graphically.

Unit 6: Exponents and Radicals

Students will:

  • Apply the laws of exponents to perform operations on expressions.
  • Simplify square roots of whole numbers and monomial algebraic expressions.
  • Simplify cube roots of integers.
  • Simplify numerical expressions containing square or cube roots.
  • Simplify a radical by rationalizing the denominator, including using conjugates. (Honors)
  • Solve radical equations in one variable algebraically. (Honors)

Unit 7: Polynomials

Students will:

  • Perform operations on polynomials, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing polynomials.
  • Factor completely first- and second degree binomials and trinomials in one variable.
  • Factor completely first- and second degree binomials and trinomials in two variables. (Honors)

Unit 8: Quadratics

Students will:

  • Solve quadratic equations in one variable algebraically.
  • Solve practical problems involving equations and systems of equations.
  • Find zeros of quadratic function families algebraically and graphically.
  • Collect and analyze data and determine the equation of the curve of best fit in order to make predictions.
  • Solve practical problems using mathematical models of linear and quadratic functions.

Unit 9: Variation

Students will:

  • Given a data set or practical situation will analyze a relation to determine whether a direct or inverse variation exists.
  • Represent a direct variation algebraically and graphically and an inverse variation algebraically.

SOL Review, Remediation, and Post SOL Activities

Students will:

  • Make connections between big ideas learned throughout the course. 
  • Deepen and extend skills learned during the course.

Assessments

Student assessments are part of the teaching and learning process.

  • Teachers give assessments to students on an ongoing basis to

    • Gather information about students' knowledge or skills.
  • Assessments provide information about a child's development of knowledge and skills that can help families and teachers better plan for the next steps in instruction.
