Michele Togbe, a junior at South County High School, has been elected by the countywide Student Advisory Council (SAC) to serve a one-year term as student representative to the Fairfax County School Board, beginning July 1, 2022. She will be the 52nd student representative to the School Board.
Togbe has three main focuses as student representative: transparency within students’ voices, furthering civic education, and maintaining an equitable lens. “It is increasingly important for our diverse communities to be represented. I have witnessed firsthand what a lack of transparency can do to a community, which is why we must be forthcoming and transparent about opportunities and programs. Every person should have equal opportunities,” she said. “That ideal can’t be achieved until all students are made aware of all resources our county offers.”
Togbe plans to use a variety of tools to hear from students. “My hope for student engagement and feedback is to be accessible as possible while also providing a variety of ways for students to share anything and everything. There are so many ways to tap into student input, from school visits, to social media, a contact form on the FCPS website, and appearing on school news broadcasts,” she said.
Being a member of the Student Equity Ambassador Leaders Program, Superintendent’s Advisory Council, and the FCPS Board of Student Representatives over the past two years has been a great learning experience for Togbe. “Getting to learn and grow through these groups has taught me about connecting with an array of students from different backgrounds and focusing on how we can better our education system. I've successfully taken information that I’ve learned through these opportunities and applied the lessons to my community. I believe the next step in my journey is to bring my experience directly to the School Board and continue to make an impact.”
Togbe is a 2023 South County class officer; the vice president of the FCPS Student Advisory Council; founder of the South County Student Equity Coalition; and member of the Model Judiciary, National English Honor Society, National Honor Society, and varsity swim and dive team. In high school, she has studied French, Leadership, Sports and Entertainment Marketing, and Dual Enrollment Entrepreneurship along with core courses in English, social studies, science, and math. As a senior, she will study Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature and Composition, Human Anatomy and Physiology, AP U.S. & Comparative Government and Politics, AP Statistics, AP French Language and Culture, Dual Enrollment Entrepreneurship 2, and AP Human Geography.
