Kathleen Walts is the executive director for the Office of Professional Learning and Family Engagement, and was appointed to this position in July 2016. She provides leadership and supervision for Professional Growth and Career Development, Title I, Family and School Partnerships, and the Parent Resource Center.
Walts joined FCPS in July 2005 as principal of Kings Park Elementary School, where she led a highly effective staff to increase student learning and achievement, and served as one of the first principals to implement the district's instructional coaching program. She then served as Principal in Residence, providing professional development and coaching support for new principals. Most recently, she served as Director of Professional Learning and School Support within the Instructional Services Department.
Previously, Walts served as principal of elementary schools in New York and Baltimore County (Maryland). While principal at Hebbville Elementary School in Baltimore County, the school earned numerous Maryland School Performance Awards.
Walts began her career as a middle school special education teacher in Baltimore County Public Schools, where she also served as a preschool and elementary special education teacher, as well as assistant principal.
The first woman in her family to attend college, Walts earned a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Geneseo, and a master’s degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Loyola University Maryland. She participated in the Harvard Principals’ Institute, and studied international special education programs at the University of Oslo in Norway.
