FCPS Response to Increased Violence Against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders

FCPS is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for people of all races, national origins, and ethnicities.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, our country has witnessed an increase in the violence, harassment, and hate targeting Asian Americans. The fatal shootings in Atlanta on Tuesday, March 16, were the latest and most tragic in a series of painful experiences.

Fairfax County Public Schools grieves with the families of the victims. Anti-Asian hate impacts our students, our colleagues, our families, and our community. We are aligned with Governor Northam in our responsibility to condemn all acts of hate. He states, “Hate and bigotry have no place in our Commonwealth or country. We all have a responsibility to condemn these racist acts and make clear that this is not who we are as Virginians, or as Americans.”

We know that members of our FCPS community are experiencing increased fear and anxiety; we see you, we are in this together. We will continue to work within this community to address misinformation and xenophobic language that leads to aggression, harassment, and exclusion of our students, families, and colleagues from Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities.

If you are a victim of harassment of any kind, please report it to the police as soon as you are able. If you are a student, please also involve your parent(s), caregiver, or a trusted adult.

Watch the School Board present their resolution to condemn anti-Asian racism and commit to action.
