Veterans Day Activities around Fairfax County Public Schools

Fairfax County Public Schools pauses to express our deep gratitude and sincere appreciation to our Veterans for their brave and selfless service to our country. Schools throughout the district reflected on the meaning of Veterans Day and engaged in meaningful activities and celebrations to honor Veterans and their families. The following represent some of the events that took place at our schools. 

Annandale High School - Students at Annandale High School created a banner honoring their Veterans with pictures of those who have served in the armed forces.

Bull Run Elementary School - Bull Run Elementary School hosted a school wide ceremony on Zoom, honoring Veterans and military families in their community. 

Centreville Elementary School - Centreville Elementary School invited their family members who served in the armed forces, or who are currently serving to read stories to classes via Zoom.

Chantilly High School - Chantilly High School hosted the Chantilly Pyramid Veterans Day Event, which is a celebration of the community's Veterans and active military personnel.

Colin Powell Elementary School - Colin Powell Elementary School played a video tribute to Veterans and facilitated independent activities in most classes. They also participated in the singing of a patriotic medley! 

Cunningham Park Elementary School - Cunningham Park Elementary School participated in Veterans Day activities across the school. Grade 6 learned about Veterans Day using a slide show we created and by writing three acrostic poems; one that spelled BRAVERY, another that spelled MILITARY, and a third that spelled out the word VETERAN.

Deer Park Elementary School - Deer Park Elementary students wrote interview questions for current and retired military members in our community and recorded their answers via FlipGrid videos for our school. They also held a week-long Military Donation Drive to collect non-perishable snacks, card games, and small toiletries that SCA will pack up and send to deployed troops.  

Fairhill Elementary School - Fairhill Elementary School honored Veterans by showing a Veterans Day slide deck that showcased staff members’ families during the morning news show on Veterans Day. Classes created thank you cards (digital or hard copy) for the military connected family members who participated in the Fliprid videos. Fort Belvoir Elementary School - Fort Belvoir Elementary School had a busy Veterans Day - week celebrating and thanking their Veterans. Students had the opportunity to create handwritten thank you notes as well as many other arts and crafts to commemorate the day. George C. Marshall High School - On Wednesday, November 10th at 3:05pm, the George C. Marshall Military Liaison Organization honored Veterans Day with an annual Flag Planting Ceremony in front of the school. The ceremony included faculty, staff, parent and student volunteers. Haycock Elementary School - Haycock Elementary School’s 2nd grade is putting on a Veterans Day performance with songs to honor those that have served. The performance took place on November 10th, and the video of the performance was shared with the school and families on Veterans Day. 

Hayfield Secondary School - Hayfield Secondary School honored all Veterans in their community on Veterans Day. Students hosted a lunch for faculty and staff Veterans during the school day, and announcements were shared with the school community.

Herndon High School - Herndon High School recognized family members and staff who had served or are currently serving in the armed forces through a banner hung in their school. Students also wrote handwritten cards and delivered them to all military-connected students and staff on Veterans Day.

Hollin Meadows Elementary School - Hollin Meadows Elementary School hosted a Veterans Day program for students, staff, families and the FCPS community!

Kent Gardens Elementary School - Kent Gardens Elementary School hosted a Veterans Day breakfast for military families. They also collected and compiled photos and letters from our military families to display in an effort to recognize and thank service members and their families.

Lane Elementary School - Lane Elementary School celebrated Veterans Day with their families. Lane ES music teachers, who are Veterans, led the chorus in a special song for Veterans:  https://www.facebook.com/fcpsva/videos/457949365965524/ They also welcomed more than forty parents who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces to speak with all the classes! 

Lees Corner Elementary School - Lees Corner Elementary School honored Veterans on Veterans Day. Second grade made cards to send to Veterans who are in the hospital. 

Lewis High School - Lewis High School worked with Operation Gratitude to write letters to troops.  Lewis High School also interviewed teachers who are Veterans, have family members who served or are currently serving and created a video tribute, shown to all students during Advisory:  https://youtu.be/oFZHxUhqZmk 

Mount Vernon High School - Mount Vernon High School’s Purple Team celebrated all military connected students. Students wrote thank you cards to military-connected students and Veterans and asked students to indicate on a world map where they or their Veteran had been stationed. 

Orange Hunt Elementary School - Orange Hunt Elementary School hosted an in person, three session event with outside stations, giving students the opportunity to meet Veterans from their community, learn about deployment and engage in a PT (Physical Training) bootcamp! 

Parklawn Elementary School - Parklawn Elementary School engaged in a Red, White & Blue spirit day on Veterans Day! They also had a special presentation on the morning news show; and engaged the whole school in a letter writing event for children to thank Veterans. 

Poe Middle School - Poe Middle School students engaged in a short lesson and activity about Veterans Day. Faculty and parents with a military connection were asked to contribute videos via Flipgrid, so that they could be shared with the school community during Advisory. 

Poplar Tree Elementary School - Poplar Tree Elementary School had an in person and virtual celebration where they invited Veterans in for a ceremony in their library, and live streamed it into classes, followed by a parade of students outside to honor their Veterans!  

Robinson Secondary School - Robinson is committed to celebrating their military families, especially on Veterans Day. Since the school bears the name of a brave and proud Soldier, every year, Robinson SS hosts a ceremony where a wreath is placed in his honor and ALL Veterans’ honor. In addition, Robinson SS interviewed veterans and shared the video with students and staff.

Sangster Elementary School - Sangster Elementary School hosted a virtual event with a veteran guest speaking in every class via Zoom link, staff salutes, a video of flag raising by active duty from all five branches and band and orchestra performances. 

Stratford Landing Elementary School - Stratford Landing Elementary School had a special day to honor their Veterans including a Veterans Day Bulletin Board in the front lobby,; classroom videos from service members; a tribute by the chorus and flag-raising ceremony; and Red, White & Blue spirit day on November 11th! 

Vienna Elementary School - Vienna Elementary School participated in Veterans Day lessons across the school! In one third grade classroom, students learned the history of Veterans Day and wrote letters to one of their classmate’s brothers, a member of the United States Navy. 

West Springfield High School - West Springfield High school placed pictures of Veterans, connected to West Springfield students, all around the school. The Military Ambassador's Club also sponsored the following activities: Banners and yard signs were displayed around West Springfield High School to honor and thank Veterans for their service; “Thank You” cards w/ candy were distributed to all those on the school staff and faculty who are military connected; an announcement, noting the history of Veteran’s Day and other facts about Veterans in their community was made on Veterans Day; and emails were sent to military families thanking them for their service and sacrifice.

Weyanoke Elementary School - Weyanoke Elementary School will be celebrating Veterans Day with a pre-recorded concert! 

Woodburn Elementary School - To honor and celebrate their Veterans, Woodburn families were asked to send in pictures of family members and loved ones who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces. The images were shared with the school during their morning news show.
