Proposal to Rename Mosby Woods Elementary
Community Engagement Process
Update: The community was invited to attend a meeting on February 16 to discuss four additional names for consideration:
Mae Jemison, Sylvia Mendez, Patsy Mink, and Rebecca Lee Crumpler
The message from Assistant Superintendent Tyson was sent on February 5 and February 11. The message was sent in English, Arabic, Korean, Spanish, and Urdu.
Mosby Woods Elementary School sent messages on February 9, February 11, and February 15 to remind parents to attend the community meeting.
The Fairfax County School Board will take action on the new name at its February 18 regular meeting.

On June 18, 2020, the Fairfax County School Board met in Forum and decided to move forward with the process to rename Mosby Woods Elementary School as proposed by School Board Members Karl Frisch (Providence District) and Karen Keys-Gamarra (Member At-Large).
Regulation 8170 outlines Procedures for Naming School Facilities and Dedicating Areas of School Facilities or Grounds, the process for renaming schools and engaging the community.
On September 3, the proposal to rename Mosby Woods Elementary School was posted as New Business on the School Board meeting agenda. As outlined in Regulation 8170, a one month period of public comment, which includes a community meeting and a public hearing, has begun.
A virtual community meeting was held on Thursday, October 1. The community meeting format included information on the school name and the process to collect community input. Community members worked in virtual break out rooms to discuss and share their thoughts on whether the school should be renamed or provide suggestions for a new school name. The feedback was collected at the end of the meeting.

The School Board voted to proceed with the name change for Mosby Woods Elementary School at its October 8 meeting.
On October 22, the Superintendent offered his recommendation to the School Board on a new name(s) for the school: Five Oaks, Mary McBride, Barbara Rose Johns, and Mosaic.

A virtual community meeting was held on Monday, November 30, 2020 to collect feedback on the Superintendent's recommendations.
Community members were asked to provide feedback on two questions:
- Do you support the Superintendent’s name recommendation?
- If not, what name do you suggest and why?

A School Board public hearing on the name recommendation is scheduled for Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at 6 p.m. Anyone who wishes to speak at the public hearing is invited to sign up to speak. Information on citizen participation.
Update December 3, 2020: The School Board has postponed action on the renaming.
