10-Day Countdown for Back to School

Get ready for the 2023-24 school year.

The first day of class, Monday, August 21, is just around the corner!  Follow this 10-day calendar of back-to-school tips to make sure your child gets off to a great start. 

Parents/caregivers, students, and staff members are invited to share their favorite pictures or videos from the first day of school on social media using the hashtag #FirstDayFairfax. We will share some of the photos on the FCPS Facebook and Instagram pages.

New to FCPS? Register!

Children turning 5 on or before September 30 should be registered for kindergarten for the 2022-23 school year. All kindergarten programs are full-day and located in FCPS elementary schools.

New to FCPS? Now is the time for all new students to be registered

Immunize

Only eight more days until #FirstDayFairfax! The state of Virginia has immunization requirements for school attendance. Learn more about immunizations and free county immunization locations for FCPS students.

Remember to request documentation of your child’s immunizations to provide to their school. More information on immunization requirements and the necessary documentation is available online.

Monitor Your Child’s Success - SIS ParentVUE account

One week until school starts! If you do not already have a SIS ParentVUE account, sign up now to monitor and support your child’s academic success. Make sure to keep your contact information up-to-date so you receive communications from your child’s teacher and school!

Get News From Your School

Make sure you sign up for email newsletters from your school with News You Choose. In addition to signing up for your school newletter, you can to stay informed with a variety of newsletters on topics such as division-wide news (FCPS This Week), advanced academic programs, career and technical education, parent resource center, and special education.

Also look for FCPS and your school on Facebook and Instagram!

Plan Student Meals

Learn about how to use MySchoolBucks to purchase meals at school or how to apply for free and reduced-price meals. Look over menus with your child and help them know what to expect from school meals!

If you have questions about MySchoolBucks, your school’s front office staff can help.

Transportation

Does your student know the route they’ll walk to school or where to wait for their bus? FCPS is committed to safely transporting our students to school each day. Bus schedules are mailed to families in August. Contact the Transportation Services with any concerns.

If a student’s bus is delayed, parents may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report.

Technology 

FCPS issues all students a laptop or device for free, giving them the chance to use technology to further their education. Each school has a Technology Support Specialist (TSSpec: pronounced T-speck) that provides support to the staff and students for FCPS devices at that school. Need tech support or help retrieving a password? Want to know more about what your child views online? Learn more about student technology resources.

Attendance 

The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success.

Tomorrow’s the big day! Did you know that caregivers can access more in-depth classroom activities and connect with teachers in Schoology? Learn more about the features available to parents and how to help your student log in to their Schoology account.
