Math Inventory and Reading Inventory Parent Notifications
Understand your student's math and reading progress tests
The Math Inventory (MI) and Reading Inventory (RI) are used as an academic screener to identify potential gaps in foundational skills for current English and mathematics courses. The MI and RI are also used to measure progress in a student's reading and mathematics skills over time.
In FCPS, all students in middle schools take the MI and RI tests each fall. High school students take the fall test based on their grade level and course enrollment.
- All high school students in grades 9-11 take the fall RI test. Grade 12 students enrolled in a literacy intervention course will also take this fall RI test.
- High school students enrolled in an Algebra 1, Geometry, or Algebra Functions Data Analysis course, take the fall MI test, including students enrolled in Part 1 and Honors sections of these courses.
Winter and spring retesting is required based on a student's fall performance. Spring tests may also be given to measure skills growth for any student.

NOTIFICATION OF TESTING
Math Inventory and Reading Inventory
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) uses the Math Inventory and Reading Inventory with secondary students in grades 7-12 to determine students’ strengths and needs in mathematics and literacy. All students in middle school and selected students in high school participate in these assessments.
The purpose of these assessments is to identify students who may benefit from additional support with literacy and mathematics skills. In addition, school teams will consider assessment results as they plan instruction for your student. Assessments are administered at the beginning of the school year. Depending on grade level and initial performance, students may participate in follow-up assessment in the winter and/or in the spring.
Additional information about these assessments can be found at the following webpages:
