IB Updates

In early February 2021, the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) announced changes to the May 2021 exams. This year's IB exams will have two routes:

  1. traditional examination route
  2. non-examination route.

Both routes allow students the opportunity to earn IB Certificates and Diploma, as well as potential college credit. School systems may offer only one option to all of their IB students.

Due to current local/national health and safety restrictions, FCPS will proceed with the non-examination route. Even though students will not sit for the May 2021 exams, students will receive final IB scores using coursework marks, including Internal Assessments, and predicted grades. There will be no indication on the certificates and transcripts of the awarding route which was used. Universities worldwide have honored the 2020 results and will honor the 2021 results as well. Thus, all IB students will be able to earn an IB score and potentially receive college credit based upon their performance. Teachers and IB DP coordinators will communicate with their students regarding coursework requirements.

Students with questions about deferring their exams to a future session or canceling their exam should contact their school’s IB DP coordinator.

AP Updates

The College Board has announced that this school year, students will take their Advanced Placement (AP) exam(s) either in person using a paper/pencil format or at-home digitally, depending on the course. AP Teachers will communicate with students regarding the exam format and how to prepare for the AP exams in their specific course(s). Students will be able to take the digital exams using their FCPS issued laptops or personal desktop/laptop computers. Smartphones, tablets, and personal Chromebooks may not be used for 2021 digital AP Testing. We understand that during this challenging school year, students may want to cancel their AP exam. Will my child have the technology needed to take an at home digital AP exam?

Yes, digital exams can be taken on FCPS issued computers or on a personal laptop/desktop computer. Because they require typed free responses, exams cannot be taken on smartphones and the College Board does not allow the use of personal Chromebooks to take the exams. FCPS will work to ensure students can use their FCPS issued devices to test.

What are the differences between a digital exam and a paper/pencil exam?

Digital exams will be as long as paper/pencil exams and will test the same knowledge and skills.

Paper/Pencil Exams

  • Are taken by FCPS students in-school .
  • Begin at 8 a.m. or noon ET.
  • Are monitored by an in-person proctor.

Digital Exams

  • Are taken by FCPS students at home.
  • Begin precisely at noon or 4 p.m. ET.
  • Do not allow students to revisit previously answered questions.
  • Do not allow students to move back and forth between unanswered questions.
  • Do not include questions that can be answered with internet searches.
  • Include security features that prevent students from collaborating, accessing unauthorized aids, or attempting to have someone else test for them.
  • Will be reviewed with plagiarism detection software and post exam analysis by the College Board to detect exam security violations.

My child is not coming to school this school year due to health concerns and is scheduled to take a World Language exam. What are the options?

The College Board requires that all AP World Language be administered in person. If your child is unable to test in person, the exam will be canceled with no penalty.

Underclassmen taking AP World Language courses may postpone their test until 2022.

Seniors unable to take an AP World Language exam are encouraged to contact the college they plan to attend to inquire about how to take a language placement exam on campus. The College Board will be offering vouchers to take a free CLEP exam for students unable to test in person this year for the German, French and Spanish Language exams.

If my child misses their AP exam due to illness or an extenuating circumstance, will there be a makeup opportunity?
