PSAT Testing Update
Understand plans for high school PSAT testing
Letter - PSAT Testing Status Update, August 2020
The following provides preliminary information about the division's PSAT testing plans for fall 2020.
To Parents and/or Guardians of Eleventh Grade Students:
With the shift to virtual learning in fall 2020, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and many divisions across the United States are making adjustments to ensure safe and appropriate Preliminary SAT testing opportunities for students. FCPS leadership is planning to offer the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) in October to eleventh grade students free of charge at local high schools, as long as the local and state health guidelines allow for in-person testing at that time. The specific testing date is still being finalized at this time. To ensure students and schools are prepared for this opportunity, it is important for families to have some general information about the assessment. The purpose of this letter is to provide this time sensitive information.
The PSAT/NMSQT is created and managed by the College Board, the same organization responsible for SAT and Advanced Placement (AP) tests. Information about PSAT/NMSQT test content and format can be found at: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/inside-the-test/compare-specifications. Students with disabilities who have testing accommodations documented in a 504 Plan or an individualized education program (IEP) may be eligible for testing accommodations on the PSAT/NMSQT.
- If the student already has College Board accommodations approved from a previous PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, SAT, or AP test, then no further action is needed.
- If new College Board accommodations are requested, then parents and guardians need to provide input and consent by August 18, 2020. This will allow school staff to submit testing accommodation requests before the College Board deadline. If you feel your student may need new PSAT/NMSQT testing accommodations, please review the additional information and forms enclosed with this letter.
FCPS is excited that we may be able to provide this opportunity for your eleventh grade student this October. Stay tuned for more information about the PSAT/NMSQT in the coming weeks, including the FCPS test date and planned health and safety precautions for testing at school sites.
