SOL Score Reports for Families

Understanding your student's SOL results

After each Standards of Learning (SOL) testing window, student results are verified and submitted to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). Once this verification process is complete, scores are available for official reporting to parents. In an effort to make student results more understandable to parents and guardians, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) prepares a custom SOL parent score report for each testing window. Contents of the official Fairfax County Public Schools score report are provided below.

What information does the report include?

The SOL score report score report provides overall results and reporting category results for each completed test.

The FCPS iReady score report provides results for the test overall and for tested domains.

  • Overall results include the scaled score (0-600) and performance level (Pass/Advanced, Pass/Proficient, Fail/Basic, Fail/Below Basic, etc.).
  • Reporting category results provide the scaled score (0-50).

Information about how to interpret these values is provided in the report letter. Contents of the letter and a printable copy are provided below.

How are scores reported to families?

When a student takes a SOL exam in a testing window, families receive a custom score report within 2-4 weeks of the close of the window.

  • The custom report is posted to the SIS ParentVUE Documents section
  • Numerical scores are posted to the SIS ParentVUE Test History section
  • For families without a ParentVUE account, the custom report distributed to the family from the school

OFFICIAL STANDARDS OF LEARNING SCORE REPORT

Testing Window: _______________

Created at _____________

To the Parents/Guardians of:___________________________ SID:_________ GRD:_____

Official results are listed below for Standards of Learning (SOL) tests your student took in the recent testing window. Your student’s overall scaled score and performance level are listed for each SOL test, along with the score for each reporting category.

Overall scaled scores are reported on a scale of 0-600. A student must attain an overall scaled score of 400 or higher to pass the test. If a student attains an overall scaled score of 500 or higher, the student is considered to have performed at an advanced level on the test. An overall scaled score between 0 and 399 indicates the student did not pass the test. An entry of “NS” for the scaled score means no score is available. If your student has multiple results for the same test, this means your student attempted the same test more than once during this testing window.

The performance level gives a brief description of the overall test outcome. Additional information about the knowledge and skills a student would be expected to demonstrate at each performance level for a SOL test is available on the Virginia Department of Education webpage (http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/scoring/performance_level_descriptors/index.shtml).

Reporting category (RC) scores are reported on a scale of 0-50 and indicate relative strengths and needs within the tested subject area. A RC score of 40 or above indicates strength in that area, and a RC score below 30 indicates an area for growth. An entry of “NS” for the RC score means no score is available.

If you have any questions about the results shown on this report, please contact your student’s school counselor or school test coordinator/assessment coach.

How is Standards of Accreditation (SOA) growth reported?

For grade 3-8 students who were not proficient on the spring SOL test for reading and/or mathematics, VDOE considers whether the student met a SOA growth target. VDOE also considers the growth target for grade 4-8 students who were not proficient on the spring Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP) test for reading and/or mathematics. The SOA growth calculation compares a student's spring SOL or VAAP performance to results from a previous state test.

  • For students in grade 3 in the spring who took SOL tests, SOA growth is measured against the fall grade 3 Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) result.
  • For students in grades 4-6 in the spring, SOA growth is measured against the previous year's SOL or VAAP result.

SOA growth letters are sent only to families whose students were not proficient on the spring SOL or VAAP test but did meet the growth target in reading and/or mathematics based on the most recent SOL or VAAP scores. SOA growth report letters are delivered in August after distribution of annual SOL and VAAP score report letters.

STANDARDS OF ACCREDITATION GROWTH REPORT

Standards of Learning Growth Outcomes

To the Parents/Guardians of: _______________  SID: __________

This letter provides information about your student’s growth on state assessments so you can join us in celebrating their learning. Earlier this summer, we shared an official Standards of Learning (SOL) or Virginia Alternate Assessment program (VAAP) score report. That report showed the overall test scaled score and performance level for each of your student’s spring SOL or VAAP tests.

Even though your student did not earn a proficient score for reading and/or mathematics on their spring test, their performance improved from previous state tests. This means your student is closer to meeting grade level standards. Virginia recognizes this growth when measuring school success for the Standards of Accreditation (SOA).

Your student met state SOA growth targets in:______[Reading and/or Mathematics]_____.

  • If your student was in grade 3 in the spring, SOA growth was measured against the fall grade 3 Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) result.
  • If your student was in grade 4-8 in the spring, SOA growth was measured against the previous spring’s SOL or VAAP result.

Fairfax County teachers and staff look forward to continuing to support your student's learning in the coming year. If you have questions about your student’s continued growth in reading and/or mathematics, please contact your student’s teachers.
