West Potomac HS Student Wins Youth Journalism International Award for Writing

West Potomac High student Christine O’Hara was named the winner of the Jacinta Marie Bunnell Award for Commentary by Youth Journalism International in their 2019 Excellence in Journalism contest.  O’Hara’s  article, “We were fine until the fire alarm went off,” was cited by the organization as the best piece of commentary by an individual for its description of how students were feeling in her school following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.  O’Hara received her award on World Press Freedom Day. The Youth Journalism International contest recognizes columns; commentary; cartoons; editorial; reporting; feature writing; essays; multimedia features, news, and sports; opinion pieces, photo essays; feature, news, and sports photography; photo illustration; profiles; reviews; and sports features, news, and opinions.
