Sudanese Author to Visit Poe MS
Author Nathaniel Chol Nyok will visit Poe Middle to share his experiences as a Lost Boy in South Sudan on Wednesday, November 22. Eighth grade students have just finished reading "Lost Boy, Lost Girl: Escaping Civil War in Sudan," a memoir and tale of survival by John Bul Dau and Martha Arual Akech, in their English classes. As part of Poe's International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum and mission to create more empathetic citizens of a global society, students read about John and Martha's struggles to find food, water, and safety while fleeing from violence in their country. They also read recent news articles about the struggles of refugees in Sudan and elsewhere, sharpening their awareness of a global problem occurring right now. Listening to Chol Nyok's story and asking him questions during his visit will help students put a human face on what can seem like an overwhelming crisis, bringing their learning out of the classroom and into the real world.
