October 06, 2016

The Fairfax County School Board has selected Steven Lockard, deputy superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), to serve as interim superintendent.  Lockard will assume the duties of the superintendent when current Superintendent Karen K. Garza departs.  Garza announced her resignation on September 19.

“Steve Lockard is a skilled, collaborative administrator who understands how our school district works,” said School Board Chair Sandy Evans.  “He is a champion for students and ensures that student achievement is at the forefront of everything we do.  The Board is grateful that he has agreed to lead Fairfax County Public Schools while we search for a new superintendent.”

Lockard joined FCPS as deputy superintendent in August 2014 after serving as deputy superintendent of Frederick (Md.) County Public Schools.  Currently, he provides leadership to FCPS schools and centers, the five Region offices, the Hearings Office, and the Student Activities and Athletics program.

“The Board is fortunate to have someone with the expertise, vision, and knowledge that Dr. Lockard possesses to step into the superintendent’s role during this interim period,” added Evans.  “We have a number of challenging issues facing us in the next few months, and the Board is confident that his leadership will enable us to make a seamless transition.  We appreciate his willingness to serve in this role.”
