Statement on Special Education Task Force

News Release
October 14, 2019

Superintendent Scott S. Brabrand shared the following information with members of the Special Education Task Force:

While FCPS continues to review the complaint filed recently by several individuals and organizations seeking monetary damages and attorneys’ fees against the School Board, we must suspend the work of the Special Education Task Force while this litigation is pending.

The decision is unfortunate, but necessary. Sadly, instead of accepting our invitation to participate in the important work of the Task Force, the plaintiffs’ lawyers have asserted that the Task Force itself is “nothing more than a public relations ploy, if not an acknowledgement and admission of misconduct.”  While FCPS disagrees with that characterization, it is impractical for the Task Force to continue its work while it is one of the targets of this litigation.

So FCPS is regrettably suspending the group’s work, as well as that of its various subcommittees. Task Force members have been notified that they should preserve and retain all of their documents relating to the group’s work pending further developments in the litigation.  The Superintendent is hopeful that the Task Force can be reconstituted to resume its work once the litigation is concluded.
