Sixth Graders Attach Real-World Significance to Math Assignment
Sixth graders in Amanda Rodriguez’s class at Lake Anne Elementary took a math assignment into the real world, enabling them to assess the cost of goods and value of money. In November, the students were challenged to create a restaurant, design a menu including the prices using decimals, and figure how to make change using addition and subtraction. In groups of 2-3 students, they tackled their assignment and, while working, decided they wanted to bring in food and set up like a real restaurant. On restaurant day, each student received $20 in play money and visited each restaurant to learn what was on the menu. They then enjoyed dining on some of the menu options.
