Seven Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) teachers have achieved or renewed certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

FCPS congratulates the following five newly certified National Board teachers: Jennifer Cottle (Haycock Elementary School), Ashley Karraro (West Springfield High School), Cathy Nichols-Cocke (Fairfax High School), Allison Wiener (Madison High School), and Catherine Williams (Fairfax High School).

The following board-certified teachers have renewed their board certification for an additional ten years: Julia Haywood (Little Run Elementary School) and Leah Ross (Woodson High School).

This group of teachers joins the group of 21 teachers that was announced in January.

Over the course of the program, more than 500 FCPS teachers have achieved this prestigious certification. Currently, FCPS is ranked first in the state of Virginia with a total of 318 active National Board-certified teachers, placing Fairfax County in the top 30 school districts nationwide.  Seventy-five percent of National Board Certified teachers work directly with students while others have moved into leadership roles throughout the division.

Initial certification and renewal of National Board Certification asks teachers to compile and submit a portfolio to document their high quality instruction, ability to differentiate, and demonstrate how their practices continue to align with the five core propositions of accomplished teaching in their certificate area. The Office of Professional Learning and Family Engagement provides free professional development and support to those teachers renewing certification or seeking initial certification.
