School Board Passes Resolution on High School Voter Registration Challenge

The Fairfax County School Board passed a resolution to support and recognize the organizations that provide voter registration opportunities to high school students.  The resolution follows:

FCPS High School Voter Registration Challenge
Resolution – September 2020

WHEREAS, voting is the most important civic opportunity of United States citizens and is the cornerstone of our democracy; and

WHEREAS, a new Virginia law requires every public high school to provide opportunities for eligible students to register to vote during the school day; and

WHEREAS, the Ethical and Global Citizen attribute of the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate is an expectation for all students, and schools are committed to developing students who will exercise their rights and responsibilities as citizens, providing fair and equal access to voting is an ongoing effort in our country; and 

WHEREAS, civic education contributes to the development of engaged citizens and increases the likelihood of future participation in voting, providing information to students about voter registration and how, when, and where to vote prepares students to exercise their voting rights; and

WHEREAS, young people who are registered to vote participate in numbers close to the participation rates of older voters, voting is habit forming. When young people exercise their voting rights, they are likely to become lifelong voters, exercising their duties and responsibilities as citizens;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Fairfax County School Board recognizes the efforts of the League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area, the Fairfax County Office of Elections, Fairfax County Council of PTAs, and the FCPS social studies team and teachers who provide voter registration opportunities and nonpartisan information about voting procedures to eligible students;

THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Fairfax County School Board will recognize schools that make significant contributions to student voter registration via the redesigned High School Voter Recognition Challenge. This recognition is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area and the Fairfax County Council of PTAs.
