UPDATED March 26, 2020

The College Board and International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) continue to provide 2020 AP/IB program testing updates and guidance directly to students and parents through global press releases. In light of that communication, FCPS is providing additional guidance to ensure our students and parents understand how the district is responding to these changes and specifically, how we plan to provide support to students moving forward. Reference the most recent updates by program below along with the FCPS response to best support and meet the needs of our students.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) PROGRAM - AP Updates from the College Board, March 20, 2020.
•    Traditional face-to-face exam administrations will not take place. Students will take a 45-minute online free-response exam at home.
•    Some students may want to take the exam sooner rather than later, while the content is still fresh. Other students may want more time to practice. For each AP subject, there will be 2 different testing dates and students will be able to test on their preferred date, regardless of the test window for which they were originally registered.
•    College Board timeline:
o    March 23 – update was sent to students directly from the College Board.
o    March 25 – students have access to College Board’s free, live AP review lessons, delivered by AP teachers from across the country. These optional, mobile-friendly classes are designed to be used alongside work that may be given by schools. Students can find the classes at
o    April 3 – the full exam schedule including the specific free-response question types that will comprise each AP exam will be published by the College Board. Additional test details including information for students with accommodations will be announced.

AP students are encouraged to access lessons, tools and review resources provided via FCPS 24-7  as well as those provided by the AP program.
Once AP testing details have been released by the College Board on April 3, 2020, FCPS will communicate procedures directly to students and parents to ensure that every student is fully supported and successful throughout the 2020 AP online test at home exam administration. FCPS will provide guidance around refund requests as soon as possible.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB) PROGRAM - IB Updates from the International Baccalaureate Organization, March 23, 2020.
In light of the March 23 IBO press release, announcing the cancellation of the May 2020 International Baccalaureate (IB) Examination Session, we want to provide students and families the next steps for IB Diploma Program (DP) and IB Career-related Program (CP) students. Even though the May 2020 exam session has been cancelled, IB scores (1-7) will still be awarded based on internal and external assessments. These scores awarded by IB will be sent to universities and colleges for potential college recognition. In addition, DP diploma candidates and CP candidates will be expected to fulfill the Core program requirements.

IB has provided a timeline with extended deadlines for submission of required components. Moving forward, IB teachers will communicate directly with families and students regarding these deadlines to ensure students are able to complete and submit all required coursework in order to comply with IBO’s extended deadlines. To meet these submission deadlines, IB teachers and students with outstanding assessment work may need to begin collection of these assessments or direct instruction about these assessments prior to April 14, 2020.
