Madison HS Students Excel at VJCL State Convention

Madison High students picked up 27 individual awards and a school spirit award at the 2020 Virginia Junior Classical League (VJCL) state convention, held virtually in November. VJCL is an organization of high school students who study Latin, Greek, and the classical humanities. The Madison delegation included students from every level of Latin. Each Madison student took three academic tests and participated in three additional arts and crafts or creative arts contests. Seniors and co-presidents of the Latin Club Juno Braley and Melinda Goldfedder served as Madison’s voting delegates. Winners included: Corinne Church: summa cum laude, Costume Contest, Patroclus; summa cum laude, Impromptu Art; first place, Reading Comprehension, Elementary Level; first place, Geography, Level I; second place, Derivatives, Level I; fourth place, Mottoes, Quotes, and Abbreviations, Level I; Juno Braley: summa cum laude, T-Shirt Design; magna cum laude, Impromptu Art; sixth place, Mottoes, Quotes, and Abbreviations, Level IV; tenth place, Derivatives, Level IV; Sophia Hsu: summa cum laude, Portfolio; third place, Vocabulary, Level I; sixth place, Mottoes, Quotes, and Abbreviations, Level I; seventh place, Derivatives, Level I; ninth place, Reading Comprehension, Elementary Level; Madison Le: cum laude, Upper Level Modern Myth; Sinead McWeeney: magna cum laude, Graphic Arts Portfolio; magna cum laude, Latin Oratory, Level II; cum laude, Impromptu Art; third place, Geography, Level III; eighth place, History, Level III; Hannah Petersen: summa cum laude, Latin Oratory, Level II; summa cum laude, Impromptu Art; summa cum laude, DIY Masks; magna cum laude, Costume Contest, Cloelia; cum laude, Modern Myth, Middle Level; seventh place, Reading Comprehension, Intermediate Level. Students from 50 schools across the state participated, including nine students from Madison. The state convention features a wide variety of competitions in academics, graphic crafts, and creative arts, all based on classical content and themes. In addition, students participate in Discamus sessions featuring Latin and Greek teachers and professors from around the state, a spirit contest between schools, a talent show, and elections for state officers.
