student with parentsFreedom Hill Elementary staff members are finding innovative ways to encourage young writers and celebrate student success during virtual learning. Working together in Collaborative Learning Teams, instructional personnel are creating opportunities for students to use Wixie, an online creativity tool, for nonfiction writing. Each first grade student created an all about book in Wixie. They harnessed prior knowledge to showcase their knowledge of animals, foods, holidays, and more. Teachers worked with students to refine their work and add appropriate details. Students were then able to bring their writing samples to life with images and voice recordings. The culminating event was a writers’ celebration where family members and school administrators were invited to hear each student read. Students listened to their classmates as their work was proudly displayed in the virtual classroom.  Contact news liaison Tim Scesney at [email protected] or Lindsey Hollaar at [email protected].
