Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is announcing that it will be expanding opportunities to return additional students for four days of in-person learning for identified PreK-12 students throughout April.

These expanded opportunities will be based on the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance from March 12, which allows schools the opportunity to transition from 6 feet to 3 feet social distancing in some circumstances, and within certain community transmission rates as well as each school’s available space and staffing capacity. 

“I am thrilled to announce that FCPS is continuing to move forward with bringing back additional students to in-person learning - particularly our students who are experiencing the greatest learning challenges,” said Scott S. Brabrand, FCPS Superintendent. “Overall, we see this as very good news for FCPS students, families, staff, and the community and will help us prepare for five days of in-person instruction this fall.”

Starting the weeks of April 6 and April 13, FCPS will offer four days of in-person instruction to PreK-12 students who are experiencing the greatest learning challenges, as identified by school personnel using the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). 

Starting the week of April 20, FCPS will offer four days of in-person instruction to PreK-12 students whose families identified a preference for in-person instruction since the fall and are already attending two-days in-person.

Both options will take into consideration the school’s capacity, staffing, and associated current rate of community transmission and, as a result, the transition will not look exactly the same in every school. Each school will need to resolve how to manage lunch when students are still required to be 6 feet apart and all facing the same direction. Staff will also still be required to follow the 6 feet social distancing guidelines at all times.
