FCPS Students Sweep Team Titles at 2019 Virginia Scholastic Chess Championships

Students from four Fairfax County public schools won team championships in all four K-12 divisions at the Virginia Scholastic Chess Championships held recently in Charlottesville.  Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students also won individual titles in the K-3 and K-12 divisions of this year’s championships.


The K-3 team from Spring Hill Elementary School won the team title in its age group; team members are Andrew Du, Bryan Tan, Ryan Guo, and Winston Yu. McNair Elementary finished second, and Silverbrook Elementary finished third. In individual competition, Trista Crowell of Silverbrook Elementary won first place, Kyle Zhuang of Fairfax Villa finished third, and Kevin Shen of Floris Elementary finished fourth. 


In the K-5 category, the McNair team took top honors; team members are Christina Liu, Sunmay Padiyar, Chandresh Duraisamy Parimala, and Sukir Chellan. Spring Hill Elementary’s team finished in third place, and Westbriar Elementary finished in fourth place. In the K-5 individual competition, Elvin Baim of Westbriar Elementary finished third and Naveen Balakrishnan of Poplar Tree Elementary finished fourth. 


In the K-8 category, Carson Middle took top honors. Team members are Rick Sun, Sergey Patsuk, Brighton Sujit Roy, Rahul Ponugoti, Aadarsini Murugan Ayyappan, David Li, Parv Jani, and Srimayi Merugu. The team from Rocky Run Middle finished second, and McNair Elementary captured third place. In individual competition, Siddhant Nair of Rocky Run Middle finished second, and Skyler Tunc of Robinson Secondary finished in fifth place.


Justin Paul and Praveen Balakrishnan of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) were named co-winners of the individual K-12 title, and the team from TJHSST won the K-12 championship.  Team members are Justin Paul, Praveen Balakrishnan, Andy Huang, Saigautam Bonam, Geoffrey Davis, Ryan Xu, Garrett Heller, Evan Ling, Camden Wiseman, Elijah Kirtley, Alex Jian, Sathya Gnanakumar, Shyla Bisht, Pranav Karthik, Andrew Song, and Angela Chen. The team from Oakton High finished second and Chantilly High finished in third place. In K-12 individual competition, Andy Huang of TJHSST finished third and Saigautam Bonam of TJHSST finished fifth. 


In the blitz competition, the McNair Elementary placed first in the K-5 team competition. Team members are Christina Liu, Yuvraj Kumpati, and Chand Duraisamy Parimala. TJHSST won the K-12 team blitz competition; team members are Justin Paul, Praveen Balakrishnan, and Camden Wiseman.
