FCPS Shares New Updates for AP and IB Students

News Release
May 05, 2020

UPDATED May 5

The College Board and International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) continue to provide 2020 Advanced Placement (AP)/IB program guidance and testing updates directly to students and parents. Based on this information, FCPS is providing additional information to ensure students and parents understand how schools are supporting students with these changes.  The most recent updates by program are below and also published on the FCPS public web at Coronavirus Update: FAQs

Advanced Placement (AP) Program

The College Board has released the 2020 AP Exam Day Checklist and an Exam Day Experience Demonstration. Please note: it is important that AP students review the checklist and immediately complete the AP Exam demo to confirm that their testing device and browser will be able to access the AP exam on test day. If a student cannot complete the AP Exam demo, contact the school AP Testing Coordinator for assistance. The following resources from the College Board are now available: 2020 AP Testing Guide, Explainer Videos, and new Course Specific Exam Information

As previously announced, traditional face-to-face AP exams will not take place this school year. To prepare for the 2020 online AP exams, students will be accessing lessons, tools and review resources provided by their AP teacher during distance learning, as well as those provided by the AP program. For details, AP students and parents are encouraged to access recently published AP Testing and Instruction Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for Students, Parents and Staff also available via FCPS 24-7 (go to middle and high school specific resources, Advanced Placement).

The College Board continues to email each AP student relevant testing information; therefore, if a student has not received email communications from the College Board, they should immediately contact their school’s AP Testing Coordinator or AP teacher(s) for instructions on how to verify the email address associated with their student account. On May 4th, important reminders will be emailed to students about how to prepare for the online AP exam. Students will be able to take online AP exams with College Board approved accommodations. Reference the following information from the College Board regarding pre-approved accommodations for 2020 AP exams

International Baccalaureate (IB) Program
As previously announced, the May 2020 International Baccalaureate (IB) Examination Session has been canceled. Based on these IB updates, we are providing students and families the next steps for IB Diploma Program (DP) and IB Career-related Program (CP) students. Even though the May 2020 exam session has been cancelled, IB scores (1-7) will still be awarded to students based on internal and external assessments. In addition, DP (diploma) candidates and CP candidates are expected to fulfill the Core program requirements.
Due to the closure of the Virginia public schools for the remainder of the school year, FCPS requested extended deadlines for submission of required components. Moving forward, IB coordinators and teachers will communicate directly with students and families regarding these deadlines to ensure students complete and submit all required coursework.
